I do "know" this band ... we had tickets for a huge concert in Germany and were wainting for the bus to take us to the stadium where they were about to give a concert that day. Then their tourbus drove by ... first time, second time, third time ... than they stopped and asked for help, 'cause they couldn't find the stadium and aksed for help and direction! To cut a long story short: We jumped into the tourbus, navigate them to the stadium and spent some time together before seeing the concert from the very first row! :-)

Many years ago, 35+ I knew a person who told me a story that he was on a travel junket in the US and in a smallish university city. He saw an add in the paper that said Jethro Tull was playing at the local Uni stadium that evening, so he walked up and bought a ticket. Tull were a quirky like act back them, still are now I guess, but after 10-15 minutes the crowd was sitting there totally not engaged with the band no applause, nothing. Anderson stopped the show and basically for them to all F... off. Which all bar a few hundred did. After another 20 minutes of chanting the band came back out and apparently played audience requests for the faithful for over two hours.

Ian Anderson was entirely self-taught on the flute. He developed his technique through experimentation of what worked for him. Many years later his daughter started taking flute lessons and showed him what she'd learned. His comment was, "Oh, that's how you're supposed to do it!" Professional flautists shudder when watching his concerts.

Just my opinion.

Jethro Tull are a British rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1967. Initially playing blues rock and jazz fusion, the band later developed their sound to incorporate elements of hard rock and folk to forge a progressive rock signature. The band is led by vocalist/flautist/guitarist Ian Anderson, and has featured a revolving door of lineups through the years including significant members such as longtime guitarist Martin Barre, keyboardists John Evans, Dee Palmer and Peter-John Vettese, drummers Clive Bunker

What I like the most about these reaction videos is, first of all, it's being done by young people, for the most part, who have only been exposed to what has passed for "music" over the last 20-25 years and that period is never, and I repeat, NEVER, going to be looked back on as music's hey-day, and for that reason they are flabbergasted when they get a glimpse of music made when "times, they were a changin'". I love seeing the light come on.
Having lived through the period and being a big music fan with very eclectic tastes, I am very familiar with the songs and artists that everyone is reacting to and I know lots of the details behind the songs and the histories of the bands and their evolution and changes in members, all the little details. This reaction craze on YT is a little like music archaeology. Scientists find bones and pot shards and tool fragments and they put it together to form their personal picture of what life was like when man first walked on two legs. The people who know for sure what went on back then are dead, so we may never know how well we have interpreted the clues we've found. You "reacters" are attempting to do the same thing with the music of a period that still has many living members to judge whether you get it right or not. It's just really fun to watch, for me. I don't judge you if you get it wrong and I REALLY applaud you when you get it right and only hope that, once you have moved away from using a particular artist as your reaction subject, that you will look into the full body of their work and some history, for your own personal enjoyment, if you found that the music was cool to you when you were reacting to it. The biggest crime would be to discover this music and never take the opportunity to just listen to it while you wash your car or make love to your girl or grill in the backyard because you've come to think of it as just a product to be converted into YT income.
I enjoy your channel, a lot.

Ian Anderson is multi talented on a number of instruments. originally he played guitar but then he heard Clapton play and gave up the guitar for the flute, lol. he also tirelessly works and donates to humanitarian causes. unfortunately he is currently suffering from an incurable form of COPD and his days are numbered but his music will live forever. A few of my personal faves are "aqualung", "cross eyed mary", "teacher", "hymn 43" +++. A must see live. he is all over the place , quite the entertainer

All of Aqualung is a superb album, but if you want more off-the-chain flute, you want "Cross Eyed Mary" and "My God" in particular. "Skating Away," "Inside" and "Teacher" are good choices from other albums, and if you're really feeling brave you can tackle "Thick as a Brick." (The album is the song. It's 40 minutes.)
The story goes that my sister used to be able to keep up with the flute solo when this song was playing on the radio. Sadly, private lessons weren't in the budget at the time.
Rock flute is not as common as rock sax, but there's a little bit. The Moody Blues also dip into it ("Nights in White Satin" has a lovely solo).

Glad your finally getting around to some Tull. Great song and you'll probably get a million recommendations for more off the Aqualung album (which is great). But Tull is a deep and diverse rabbit hole. For a more progressive, renaissance-type feel, try anything off their Songs From the Wood album.

Totally agree, I think inevitably Chad will come to Aqualung based on comments and it is a good song, but 'To Cry You A Song', 'A New Day Yesterday' so many others, I'm looking forward to him discovering it all 👍🏼

I think The Whistler was the best song on that album. There's a relatively short song, but rather powerful and that whole album uses flute. Ian Anderson is classically trained on flute and decided to use what he had if memory serves... and it is a bit of a unique touch in rock music... sort of like the bagpipes in Slade's song Run, Runaway.

Next time watch a live performance. Ian Anderson is incredibly entertaining. He’s all over the stage and he pours his heart and soul into it when singing and when playing the flute. Any of the following are great:
    Aqualung
    Thick As A Brick
    Bungle In The Jungle

I was there in Memphis when Tull was on the Aqualung tour, saw the show and it steered my life at 16 years old. I was no longer a child. What an experience, the sounds of that night often returns to my memories.

Oh yeah! The incomparable Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson is the frontman for this group. A madman/singer/lead flute player. You have a lot of uniquely great music ahead of you down THIS rabbit hole! I strongly recommend Aqualung for your second reaction to them. (Most people would recommend that one first, but I think the one you did was the BEST introduction song for them.) Aqualung will not disappoint!

I saw Jethro Tull in concert 4 times. Each was amazing. Once concert lasted 4+ hrs as they just kept on playing. He was also a master at entertaining the audience. One concert had a very large telephone on stage that rang 3 times while he played. He answered all 3 times. First one he claimed was a wrong number, the 2nd was his mother, the 3rd (when they came out for the encore) he handed the receiver to the audience and claimed "IT'S FOR YOU"!

The entire Aqualung album is fantastic. " Thick as a Brick " is a masterpiece but NEEDS to be listened to from beginning to end as each piece melds into the next, and its also a concept album. These 2 are imo Tulls best works.

I don’t listen to them every day, but these guys really created something cool and unique. A rocking flute solo rather than a guitar??? Hell yes.

Martin Barre's solo ends orgasmically. He's another one of the great guitar players who are called underrated. Not by me nor any of Tull's fans. The band was so solid and polished. If you are into bass solos, don't miss Glenn Cornick playing on Bouree. He and Ian Anderson (playing flute) are phenomenal!
