I love listening Luke's podcast. This is the best app that I've found on internet. Thx so much luke
Update (August 2022) I finally managed to add subtitles (automatically generated) to this video! 📖🎧
You can also read a transcript for the episode here teacherluke.co.uk/2017/08/15/why-does-the-uk-have-so-many-accents-recorded-february-2017/
Thanks for useful podcasts. But some videos dont have subtitles like this video. Could you please fix this problem?
@@ulviyyahasani I always add automatic subtitles but sometimes RUclips doesn’t allow them, and I don’t know why.
Love your voice whenever i feel overthinking to speak English like a native you been helping me out. Thanks a lot
This is really nice, I can perfectly understand everything you're saying. I'm from south america colombia and my native language is Spanish and I do have this terrible obsession with british english that I've practiced for almost 3 years by my own, without taking classes or going to an english institute and at some point in my life I had the opportunity to know some people from other countries who speak English and they thought I was from the UK because of my accent... I'm really happy about what I achieved during this time practicing and put a bit of effort in learning english by my own hand and I will keep doing it. :)
Patrick Ojeda This is amazing! I'm Brazilian - native language Portuguese - and I do like the British accent. It sounds really good to my ears.
yes xd
Very interesting diving in the world of English accents
how you learn by yourself, I have been studied 3 years and I have not reach a good level
@Dulce Cardona I can assume you don't need study English because it's not work this way but it should to be part of your life. You should to have English session at least some minutes every day. By the way listening skills part most complicated from all so you should to listen original English every day
Speaking of accents, pronunciation, and general ways of speaking, Luke, I find your podcasts and videos absolutely perfect for the listeners of a proper level, obviously, in terms of the aforementioned. You find a perfect balance between speaking in a natural way, using colloquial language, and still being understandable.
Thank you Luke. I'm an ESL teacher as well, and you've been very inspiring.
Luke's English Podcast is incomparable. Many will find it more helpful than other podcasts. Have both pleasure and knowledge with Mr. Luke.
I have never seen such a good and expert English speaker whose pronounciation is so clear and error free. Keep it up, we need such people who do their work wholeheartedly.
Благодарим Вас за Ваш труд. Интересно слушать, приятный голос, культурная речь, хорошая артикуляция... Бог в помощь и Ангела Хранителя!
I don't think anybody's reading this anymore. This podcast is 4 years old and the last comment was 2 years ago. Many things have changed. For instance, everybody knows the word lockdown. The same goes for the word coronavirus. So, I'm stuck at home and today is cooking day. While in the kitchen I was listening to an English Teacher that I usually follow. Automatically when it finished started your podcast with Lucy, I think. I loved it. So when it ended I went for another one I found the one with the Kanguru Teacher. And liked it even more. In the meantime, I became a subscriber of his RUclips channel. And wanting a bit more from Luke I got listening to this podcast. You are brilliant. Seriously. About your questions (only some) and accents. I loved your explanation and it suits Portugal as well. You said that England was a small country, so that means that Portugal is a tiny country between Spain and the Atlantic. Believe or not I recognize at least 10 different accents. Some are geographical, like the islands of Madeira and Azores, football has also huge importance to the identification of regions and their accent. Long ago the accent that could be heard in the city of Coimbra was considered to be the proper accent because not many people studied and Coimbra was the centre of culture, with all the unis and everybody was improving themselves. Not anymore. The posh accent is one of the Lisbon accents. People from other areas "correct" their accent when they want to sound more cosmopolitan. The tricky part to distinguish real posh people is the use of certain words. Example: we have 2 words for "red" and "boy" and "gift". If you use the wrong word it means that you are a fake posh. I love languages and all these small details. That is why I keep learning English. It because I love it, not because I need it. You, Luke, inspired me and I am very grateful. Keep up with the good work and I hope to hear from you quite soon. Best wishes, stay safe. Rui
I've been listening to your podcast for a year now and unfortunately I didn't know about the RUclips channel. and now it's so weird to see you, the voice I listen to everywhere I can.
thank you for your podcasts!
Thank you Teacher Luke. I usually give up on listening maybe just after a few seconds for accents similar to the footballer you played in the video because I totally am not able to catch what they say. I am so happy this time that I can understand only because you care and made this podcast for us. You give me motivation not to avoid listening to different accents from now on. I know i would be proud one day If i can decipher even one sentence of their speaking on my own. Being able to understand what other people are trying to communicate is such an enjoyable thing. Thank you Luke.
Hi, Luke. Thanks for the video uploading! I somehow find the video series way more absorbing than the audio ones. Idk why. But anyway, your work is always an integral part of my life. I really appreciate it!

Have been listening you for many years. And now i fell like you guest! Exciting filling! Tnx you a lot!
Luke congratulations! You're the best by far, a clever , cultivated, well prepared, well articulated lecturer by nature. The whole video captivated my attention in such a smooth and argumentative way for the depht explanation of a trick subject . As a non native English speaker/learner I found this subject so interesting and clarifying, and it took me off from the comfort zone as well, learning and listening to you made me feel the urge to keep improving my English even more in order to achieve fluency ( by the way, I reckon I can pick up different english accents very easilly, the ones that I symphatise the most are the British accent (contemporary RP pronunciation) and the Australian ( general accent), and irish accent, they are the easiest for me to understand and speak as well . It's a a breeze learnnig with you! maybe you can't measure up how deep your attitude is benefitial for us non native English learners Worlwide. Keep it up mate, cheers from Brazil.
Hey, can you give a couple of tips for developing RP accent?

I have a deep appreciation for the Southern London accent. Although I initially studied English in centres where American English was the norm and even travelled to the US to improve my fluency, it wasn't until I visited Australia and attended a centre in Perth, WA that I truly fell in love with not only the charming Aussie accent, but also the delightful British accent that was taught there. The experience was invaluable in helping me to develop a more nuanced understanding and appreciation of English as a global language.
From Korea, you're my amazing teacher . thanks for all your supports
Hello Luke,
As for my favourite accent, I like yours. That's why I listen to your podcasts and recommend them to me students and friends.

Another amazing video of Luke´s English. Thank youi
Hi Luke, In my country Morocco, there’s about 30 accents from two languages (arabic and berber, and our arabic dialect is the hardest ever), and yes we do have our standard accent located between Casablanca and Rabat the two major cities of the country, and this standard accent is associated to middle workers class of people coming from all the part of the country over decades …People of my city (casablanca) do find some different accents charming… people of some regions sometimes make fun of some of our expressions 😅.
For English, I like the scouse accent of Liverpool even if I don’t understand it and I think that’s it the hardest in UK, but I find it funny and sweet, and it looks like Conor McGregor’s accent . I visited UK 🇬🇧 last year, I traveled over 4 cities (London, Oxford, Manchester and Liverpool) and found that further north we go, the accent become more difficult 😅
Luke you are amazing man. So happy to find this channel.
First time to hear about you and your channel tow days ago, and it was may be , an interview with Lucy from English with Lucy , and I have decided to follow your channel. Hi Luke. I'm always listening your podcasts when I'm at work and it is great to have that possibility. Everything thanks to you. But I'd like to hear more kind of accents on your podcasts. Most of people who you're inviting they speak very clearly. That is one thing which is missing on your podcasts but apart from that you doing great job and I'm very thankful.

What a nice podcast thanks !🤠
So I understand that accommodation has to do with the creation and simplification of languages, etc.
I have heard of the theory of "accommodation" to children, in the sense that some aspects of the evolution or simplification of languages may be due to accommodation/care to children, accepting their unconscious suggestions as children in this process of learning to speak.
More videos, please! Thank you, Luke!
Its my first time here wish you start over this useful and great episodes thanks 🙏 a lot

Hi Luke and The Korg Kaosillator behind you~😀
You're amazing! I love your accent!! ❤️
Hi Luke. Our country has also more than 10 accents which are equal with number of region.
Hey Luke I‘m very gratefull with the podcast what you have been doing, I‘m a Chilean guy who learnt American english but, now I‘m in europe and it was so hard for me to get the accent of the people over here, anyway I just wanted to let you know that you changed my way of looking english, I was used to hear some stupid english (american rappers) content because I thought that something intellectual it is gonna be too harsh for me to understand it and you prove me wrong so hands down for the way that you teach english and at the same time some useful information!
Thank you very much Luke for making good contents. I love your channels
Hi, Luke! It's so amazing to see you on the RUclips. You do such a nice project don't stop, you inspire us so much, thank you! Yoa are ROCK! I love your podcast, from Mexico
Thanks a lot for your videos! It's a really useful training in order to understand the british radio (sometimes it's really hard to understand the accent of the different journalists 😂) Keep making such good podcast 👍
From a French learner who dreams to speak like you!
When you did all the accents, you made me laugh out loud. Love it, because I lilke listening to other people accents, it shows who we are at the basic level of judement.
Great stuff! Congrats 👏👏👏 Where is the new videos?
very good podcast
Another very intetesting episode, Luke! In Italy we don't only have very different accents, but lots of dialects (our country is very young, in comparison to Britain). Some of them are almost impossible to understand for native speakers coming from parts of Italy far from each other. Accomodation is rare, I think, because many Italians are proud of the area/region they come from. More so 20 or 30 years ago, certainly. I gladly accept an accent different from my own (I'm from Veneto) but it puzzles and sometimes annoys me when I have troubles in getting what people from the south are talking about. No offence intended to anyone, just sharing this awkward feeling of being totally incompetent in my own language. Thank you for the great work, Luke!
Hi, I'm Indonesian. I listen, learn, read everything in standard RP. But when it comes to speaking I usually accommodate the communication by using American English.
