I didn't realize there was such a systemic issue in Italy that may lead to the exploitation of workers tasked with creating some of the most 'luxurious' designer bags in the world.

I’ve shifted my spending to local jewelry makers, artists and supporting our local schools. Instead of another overpriced handbag, I made a big donation to our public school district. Unlike so many of my luxury purchases, I have no regrets about supporting local artisans and my community. I know it is all going to support human beings doing great work at a living wage. The Dior scandal has gutted me. To think we pay that much to perpetuate human suffering. How awful and I may be done with the big brands forever. It is frustrating that a lot of companies in Italy and in Europe are sold to Chinese companies that apply the same cost cutting strategies they use at home which impacts the quality. I don’t trust the label “made in Italy” anymore because it lost the appeal it had before. Unfortunately, it is hard to find the products that are made in Italy and have the quality and craftsmanship we usually associate with this beautiful country.

Missing the previous LV where lesser but better designs actually stick in our minds, with higher quality canvas. They put more work on men's bags tbh, due to Ms Nicolas G.

    It is very sad learning about this and hearing how badly these workers are being exploited. It has been happening in other industries in the United States forever. I have heard about exploitation undocumented workers doing everything from factory jobs to construction and farm harvesting for poor wages. There was a company that hired 103 children (three of which were injured) to clean dangerous machinery at 13 of their meat packing factories in 8 states. The kids were required to use caustic chemicals to clean dangerous equipment at night. The Government investigated and the company was sued and paid fines but they were not shut down which is despicable to me. But we must keep the food supply chain moving, mustn’t we?

    There's no way Dior has been kept in the dark about this, if they're paying the contractors only 44gbp for a bag they sell for 2000+. After material, rent, utilities and contractors' cut, how much of that 44gbp can really be left for the workers? It's really just simple math. There are hundreds of ways for Dior to monitor the contractors and make sure they act responsibly, IF DIOR CARED. Obviously Dior cares only about profit margin. Dior gave up on creativity long ago, to be honest not surprised at all that they'd do something like this. Rumors have been circling in China for decades that Chanel bags are made there too. We'll see how that goes. If anything, Chanel at least triumphs Dior in creativity and quality.

    The hot topic in luxury buying has been about how quality is decreasing while prices increase . This has been across many brands. Meanwhile a big article was just written about how women in NY society are often carrying mega fakes that are such good quality that even authenticators can’t always tell the difference. This all makes sense if the bags are all being produced in China, the designs can more easily be duplicated and maybe replicas are even being produced in the same factory. It definitely makes me think twice about buying new. Preloved seems like a better way to go these days.

Pay attention and educate yourself before buying a luxury item. Don’t just buy an item for a label!

    When it comes to embroidery, in most cases, all the work on the material is done while it is still a flat piece and then it is assembled afterwards. This goes back even to 18th century men's court suits; tailors would buy flat panels of satin-silk that had been embroidered (silk farmers --> fabric mill --> embroiderer --> tailor, or fabric store/ general store THEN the tailor) and then show that flat piece to customers. When a customer liked a particular piece and wanted to by it the customer would then be measured and the panels would be cut out to their measurements. This practice was done to reduce the risk of waste; anyone could buy a vest if it wasn't made up yet and it would always then fit them as it should.
    In a modern context this aspect of production (doing the needlework while it is still flat) means you can pay for a higher end machine to do that step and then have it shipped to a cheaper factory to have it put together into it's final shape. The more you break-up the supply chain, the more you can squeeze each step into being pressured to offer their services cheaper and cheaper. If you spend a lot of money on one step (sourcing the fabric, or the embellishments) there is often then strong pressure to drive down the cost of the other steps to compensate for the step that wont cave to discounting their services.

    • @Handbagholic
      @Handbagholic  3 месяца назад +2

      Thanks for your in-depth response. Really great points, it may likely be if this is referring to the book tote that it was embroidered somewhere else, and maybe the $57 ish refers to assembling the pieces together as opposed to the cost of materials and time it takes to complete the embroidery.,

    I personally don't see why its shocking. Most of the cost of just about anything is marketing and PoS retail. The bag only costs ~60 dollars but the stores you walk into are some of the most expensive real estate in the world with round the clock security. They also have to pay for these crazy fashion shows and fly out influencers to sit front row while putting them in the best hotels. How much are they really making on any fashion purchase at the end of it all? Really all that's profitable for them is probably the cosmetics, which is why Hermes selling bags for 12k went ahead and launched a makeup brand.

    People are always being taken advantage of, for profit, if they can get away with it. In the western countries, too.
    Not just the fashion industry: restaurants, construction, healthcare etc. The subcontractors are from eastern countries and China, where this is common practice.
    Of course people want to flaunt their wealth (or pretending) by buying luxury. Same bag, same quality, without a label, they wouldn't look twice. It's the label that makes the item stand out as "look, I can afford this".
    There's no other logical reason. You can get the same quality from a mid- range bag.
    With those luxury prices, THE LEAST we should expect and demand, is the workers to be paid properly, and to get to work in a clean and safe environment.

I also saw a ninterview with a current Hermes employee leatherworker, who quoted the 12-18 hours. Their quality doesn't seem to be a current issue, from what I've heard. But this sure is a cost cutting measure! ALL brands care about profit. Chinese can produce the good so much cheaper. Even totally handmade bags. But I love if the responsibility for having fair working conditions is improved. It sure is a turnoff to know the actual costs though, as luxury does seem to be gouging these days.

    Funny thing is i love luxury but i also love brands like Coach where the quality is soo good and the price is reasonable too. If you ever get a Coach glove tanned leather bag, the quality is amazing. I have a few luxury bags including Dior, but after several years pass the quality of these luxury brands can only hit a ceiling....and that ceiling is easily achieved through other contemporary brands.

    Add up the man hours and the cost of the leather etc and that is what the bag is worth. Bags are also not made individually they are just finished off individually. Add a bit for a mark up for the designer name etc. But taking all this into consideration - a designer bag is probably worth £500-£1000 max!!

    So many people preferred to see their Louis Vuitton pieces made in France or Italy as opposed to the USA. Do you think the conditions in the American factories are better? Are the Chinese manufacturing companies as much in the US as in Europe? Not saying that LV follows the same practice as Dior. I can’t speculate.

    As far as I am concerned, Hermés is the ONLY brand that doesn't do this. They do however have somewhat boring designs (Birkins are outdated grandma' bags, yes I said it), it is still massively overpriced, they have a weird and snobbish business model and poor service and are clearly part of the "luxury is manufactured exclusivity" mafia, rather than being all about "luxury is superior quality" as they should be. I believe it is a long time ago all their things were 100% hand stitched.and some of their newer items, like their sneakers this year, are just hideous and an embarrasment. Their silks and perfumes are probably the only things actually worth the money.

    None of this changes the meaning of luxury. You aren’t paying for an item’s material worth, you are paying for the the value you associate psychologically with the brand. If you would feel better buying from Coach then just buy from them. If you don’t understand why people shop at Dior then you don’t need to buy anything from Dior.

    • @carlacameron4055
      @carlacameron4055 3 месяца назад

      We understand why people buy these items but we believed the conditions people were working under would be better. After companies like Nike were caught having their shoes being made under these conditions you would have thought the other brands would have smartened up. Wrong. Anyway I think many of the brands luxury and not are doing the same thing as Dior. They just haven’t been caught as yet.

    Well, unless you as a customer/purchaser/user of luxury dont have 1 specific person you go to for all your luxury needs, foe example: tailor for clothes, cobbler for shoes hatmaker etc etc, production will always be outsourced. In my humble opinion we have become lazy and very few people actually know or us aware how bad your products are sourced and manufactured. We are all sitting on our smartphones. Lets begin how that piece of technology got into our hands to begin with. Hint: no its not comfortable to be 6 years old in a sweaty, airless cave digging out cobalt while you're starving.

    Mansur Gavriel makes really nice Italian made leather bags for under $1000 and Madewell does a lot of very classic designs in leather for under $200…..Much like all these indictments against “celebs”…..It’s good that the brand myths are being debunked…..I only splurge and invest in mechanical watches such as Rolex, Vacherons, Patek…..but never Hermes or Gucci since they were not the pioneers of complicated chronometers…..Bags and clothes are really disposable items and spending thousands on one just shows the stupidity of the consumer…..if you are a financial success in real life aka high net worth, you would not be pissing it down the toilet in bags and clothes….Afterall, unless you are a money laundering participant, (such as those so called celebs - Diddy and associates….) you would know the realities of running an ethical business and not be making BS claims of overvaluations.

      No I disagree. I expect a Shein bag is likely made in a sweat shop not Dior - so I’d prefer to buy Dior. The fact the brand is sub-contracting out (which as a consumer we have no visibility of) is the issue. There are luxury brands who don’t do this, which I’m going to be looking into more and sharing my findings. That feels like the opposite of ignorance.

    Not all civilized countries are the say. Which is why there are such loopholes. For a person look for loopholes everyday, there’s no surprised people use it to their advantage. While you feel like made in Italy or France feel luxurious, but there are only so many things we can find out when NDA is in existence. So unless people with evidence come out to expose it without exposing themselves, we will keep discovering these things. No one will come out ant tell you their whole identity and medical history unless it’s beneficial to you. Same to any as well as lux company. How else they make obscene amt of money, and pay stars to represent them so consumers would buy them?
