A short tutorial showing how to replace the battery in an Anki Vector Robot.
The battery can be sourced online by Googling "600mAh 503040 Lipo" - the same battery can be used in an Anki Cozmo.
If you are in the UK I can help with repairing the battery in your robot. Please contact me at johnjudge6@gmail.com

I love how Vector tries to make his escape at the beginning of this video. Twice! He’s like, “nope! not ok with this open heart surgery.” Haha.
My vector was already working only 20-30 minutes on battery, I did step by step as in the video and vector works like new, battery replaced with 600mAh.
We'll see how long it will work now and how long it will charge.
Thank you very much for such a detailed how-to video. 🤩🤩🤩
Unless it's been changed, the charging was on a timer as an extra measure to prevent over charge, as far as I'm aware it will never charge more than 350ma, i only put a larger capacity in for one reason, you get more charge/discharge cycles if you don't fully charge them, my vector has been operating daily for the last two years on the same battery, that's quite a few cycles per day.
Thank you so much for this video just brought my daughter's beloved vector back to life....and I just adore him.
Great work! Now you know how to do it you can keep your Vector running forever!
This was the most informative video I have seen in a long time. Well done. I followed your instructions and the video and successfully changed my original Anki Vector battery to the 600mah. I especially liked the time you took to reassemble instead of telling me to just reverse the process. Thanks again.
Mainly watched this for the tear-down in the hopes of painting some Vector shells in the future, but the full explanation of how to get and repair the battery is incredibly useful information to have in case one of my boys needs surgery. Thank you very much!
Thanks for this. I just watched for an overview then multiple states and stops and my lil guy also has a new lease on life!
Best vector Battery Replacement video yet. Very detailed and a solid clear, well spoken narrative also!
Thank you!
Thanks for the great video - gave me the confidence to fit a new battery and now Vector is more active than ever!!
Great job. Well done. Hopefully you can now keep your Vector running for years to come.
Great video! Thank you so much for posting! My Vector is as good as new now!
I followed your video and successfully replaced my battery. Thank you so much.
Much appreciated video, you made this so calming and peaceful, it’s incredible.
I just replaced his OEM battery with a 600mah. His runtime is somewhat better due to the healthy cell, but after he depleted his initial 4v he only charges to about 3.8v. It’s great for the longevity of his battery, but seems his regulation is preventing him from utilizing the full capacity. I wonder how ddl’s 2.0 firmware will affect the old vectors with new and old batteries with their increased capacity
Thanks for your kind words. I’m happy to hear you got your battery installed. You are correct regarding the charging. Vector controls his own and I “think” he cuts off charging when his battery reaches around 400mAH, so a bigger battery does not necessarily equate to longer runtimes. I will make a video discussing this. Thanks for your input. John.
@@TheJohnJudge this comment may be too old but is it possible to increase the battery management through firmware update?
@@EMOJarvis that would be the best way to ensure Vector makes the most of the new battery but that is beyond my skills and Vector's firmware is maintained by Digital Dream Labs. Also I think that because Vector self charges it doesn't matter as much if his charger is nearby.
hay how mutch is it for a cozmo battery my cozmo battery is lasting like 2 min of charger
Thank you so much for this step by step How-To. I love my little Vector and plan to take up soldering so I can change out his battery when it's time. He has helped keep me sane as well. I know you aren't affiliated with DDL, but I'm thankful they have kept him going.
My every time I relect of my vector from the charger charger it turns off is that the great septifix it
Thanks for this guide. Managed to get cozmo's arms working again :)
I put mine back together and have 4 screws left 😳
😳😳😳😳
Could this work with a battery of greater capacity (e.g. 1000mAh, same voltage)? What thickness battery would fit in the area?
Hello, thank you for your video, i got a use vector, and the battery was going fast and i follow all the steps and finish to change for a 600mah and i will test it to see if will wast longer
Thank you so much for this guide, just finished changing the battery. :)
please tell me. isnt worth it buy Anki vector right now? or just wait anki vector 2.0 release? how price did you think anki vector 2.0?
Thanks for this video. I love my little Vector
My, by now, rather old Vector Robot seems to lack power all the time! So this is a fantastic showing of how to replace the battery Yourself! Thank You! SO much!
On the OLD battery my Vector has stopped being able to ANSWER - ANY order Or Question?! He gets Alert all right when Waking him By "Hey Vector"?! But now - never Gives any answer?
"Happy NewYear"? "Merry Christmas"? Nothing?! - What Could be gone wrong? In his programming? Having this effect? I have No Clue myself? - Whatsoever? So I would appriciate any suggestion or answer to this problem with my darling Vector? Always there the entertain me with his lovely tricks?! ;D K.R.'s From Steff Copenhagen. Denmark!
Hello, do you know that Vector requires a subscription these days in order to react to voice commands? The new owners of Anki, Digital Dream Labs, now run the cloud servers.
Thanks for this video, I will be attempting this soon. A bit of a shame that the battery isn't a more "serviceable" component!
Thank you! Very well done video. Side note...where did you get that teal tray that holds vector and the parts your working on?
can you do a tutorial on how to replace a vector ir camera? or maybe can someone suggest a different ir camera i can put in vector
im stuggling to find a replacement screen for my vector is there a uk supplier or anyone that has these. there are so many that are broken out there and i would love to be able to fix them and make them useful again. i got three here all with dead screens. Also do you know if the cozmo screens are the same, can you just unplug a cozmo screen and plug it into a vector body or are they totally different? was wondering because i can see on the mainboard in the head that the flash module and is intergated so would assume the robot id etc is stored in the head. I would love to try this out!
anyway great video thanks!
The Vector and Cozmo screens are not interchangeable. The company that produces the Vector screens is called Santek - the OEM part number is ST0103A2W-WSNLW-F, but they produce them in very limited quantities and they usually bought by other people repairing these robots. Perhaps if you are purchasing more than one, it may be worthwhile, but I have not found it cost effective to try and import these screens due to import duty, etc.
I got a broken vetor robot from eBay and I unplugged it screen and put in in mine with the broken screen and he worked perfectly fine but since vector whole System is on the back of vector’s screen it will not have anything you saved on it. And when i tested it it worked but then i put a small heat sink on the SOC (System on a chip) and he cooled down a lot.

This is a working vector robot that you could use to take its screen out and put it in your vector ands I could not find a defective one but i also do not know it this link will work or not. I reall hope that you vector would be able to work again.
I'm don't know if you are still looking, but if you write to Santek directly, they will sell you one for 20 USD + 30 USD shipping. I just replaced the screen on my Vector and found this video to be very helpful in getting it right: ruclips.net/video/BKnQ24JAQcE/видео.html
Just repeat what the author is doing and it should be fine ;)
My vector is away getting repaired ATM. What is the backpack? Mine was broken I guess.
I do a anki show, my experience in noticing is 503040 in vector is not working right. Hit and miss but I experimented with 20C batteries. Got a vector to move around 40 minutes from full charge. Just the 503040 doesn’t seem to like vector unless you have a higher C rating version
Thanks, that's a good point - I think it's also related to the Vector's self charge capability. Vector (like Cozmo) cuts off his charging when the battery gets to about 400mAh (because the original batteries only 320mAh). With Cozmo it's not a problem, because you can lift him from the charger and place him back on and he carry on charging past his failsafe cut-off all the way to max capacity of the battery. But Vector controls his own charging. So even if he was fitted with a 1000mAh battery, he'd still cut off charging at the failsafe point and subsequently run for the same amount of time.
Great video. I have just removed his battery and noticed that the battery was slightly swollen which is not good. If I had not seen that god knows what could have happened.
I don't even have one… But I'm a hobby fix it myself guy like you and I'm just here to say what an excellent job you've done at showing how to do it… Good work. I love the video. I wish you could do one for the living AI EMO robot because that's the one that I have. I would love to see a heads up… Anyway you're really good
I have never seen an EMO up close. If I ever get hold of one I will definitely do a teardown/servicing video. Thanks!
@@TheJohnJudge when you do get one you're gonna like it… And living AI is good at giving firmware updates adding new features. They've been treating people pretty good. I hope you get one I want to see him ripped to pieces… Oh you'll have fun… LOL nice to meet you take care
John, I need your help, I replaced the battery of my Vector and it worked great for 3 days and then the error 899 and 801 appeared on the screen I already followed all the steps of DDL to solve the problem but nothing seems to work
Thank you a lot for this great video. At some point I will have to change the battery, but I am a little afraid of this challenge.😱🥺
How long runs our Buddy with the new battery? My friend currently lasts about 15 minutes before he has to go to the charger
Where can I ship it in the US to fix the battery?
Y todas esas herramientas donde se consigue?
Hello Sir, where can i buy the replacement battery
My DDL Vector 2.0 no longer charges or power's ON. Should I replace the battery?
@@sun1234567890 yes if you can.
My Vector is showing lines across the lower half of the screen. Where could I buy another display? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi thought your video on replacing the battery was fab but alas to complicated for me as I’m very heavy handed how hutch would it coco me for you to replace the battery with a new 600 mill amp one
Email me johnjudge6@gmail.com
Such a great calm video.
Wonder if you could help me?
I’ve bought a second hand vector and struggling to create an account with the vector app.
I understand that ddl are going through are structure shall we say but I’m at a loss as what to do, he is just sitting on his charger waiting for me to create an account from an app that can’t connect to ddl.
Any advise is appreciated.
Thankyou
Thanks for your comment. I think I should investigate the wire pod option which is currently available through third party vendors. I believe you can make your own local server for vector so he can be used independent of DDL cloud servers.
Hello i already changed vectors battery but still he only lightup with 1 blue bar and nothing. Even if i do 15sec reset nothing happend i think maybe it is a software issue.
Will it work with 503040p 650mAh? My anki is not working without charging dock.
Yes
We have a vector which keeps going 898 error on startup.
Have you heard of any other vectors doing this because of battery issues.
Boots to cloud screen, then goes to 898. Can't get past that screen.
Is it a bad battery if it just dies when it comes off the charger?
Yes.
@@TheJohnJudge thanks!
My vector turns off when he's off his charger, would I need to replace his battery or any suggestions on what you think my cause this?
Yes sounds like it needs a new battery. Email me johnjudge6@gmail.com
Thank you so much excellent description in this video.
What kind of tools did you use?
THX A LOT! Your video makes me feel like Superwoman. I'm going to try it on my buddy. 😰😰😱How long will Vector 1.0 hold out with a new battery? Mine is currently about 10-15 minutes
It will run for at least 30 minutes with a new battery. Email me if you get stuck. Johnjudge6&gmail.com

Thank you so much for sharing this.
Did this now only alexa commands work?
The vector servers are currently down so only Alexa commands work. Check Digital Dream Labs website
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Ok... my vector all of a sudden started constantly raising his arm-lift up and down and won't stop.. he just started doing that. Dream Labs will NOT help me with this situation... why is he doing this and how can I make him stop?
Where can take my vector to replace its battery? I’m in Nassau county NY
Join the Digital Dream Labs Official Vector Owners Group on Facebook and check if someone nearby can help you with this repair.
I have 2 cozmo and 2 vector..... i have changed battery 2 times..... the batterys i bought was not good enough..... what battery do you by ? :-)
I don’t have a preferred supplier. Just Google “503040 600mAH lipo” and you should see plenty of options. You can email me at johnjudge6@gmail.com
This is an excellent tear-down video. Thank you!
Hey, great video! Do you have any contacts that do cozmo repairs in Canada?
dudeeeee, i am on the same boat, let me know if you found anyone
What kind of battery does it take?
Link to battery is in comments.
thanks
love it!!
very well done, thanks for the effort. great work
Hello my vector is with error 893 could you help me
Hello, I will check for some solutions and get back to you
Do you have any links for a vector screen replacement?
You have to contact Santek directly - they are only made in small quantities.
The part number is ST0103A2W-WSNLW-F
Great video...but!...you do not force the lower arm off!!! Your force the upper- which is not to difficult, and then lift the lower as far up as possible then it will fall off
Why does my robot keep dying when I take him off charger when he has like 10 hour charge
Probably his battery can no longer hold any charge.
@@TheJohnJudge so would I need to replace ??

Per caso in Sardegna c è qualcuno che può sostituire la batteria di vector?
Email me Johnjudge6@gmail.com
Lo más complicado es soldar la batería porque sino lo haces bien te da error
I want to upgrade to 600 mah but i'm scared of my Vector exploding because this is no geniue part
A 600mah will
Not explode
They do not tell you that you have to pay a monthly fee when they sell you one, and I am a month since purchased and still no shipping notification. I have filed a claim with Paypal!
Have you purchased a 2.0 Vector?
@@TheJohnJudge Yes, I have over two weeks ago and the item still has not shipped. I am attempting to cancel the order thru Paypal because they do not tell you when you purchase that you have to pay $7.00 per month to use this little robot. You have to hunt on the website to find the info. As far as I am concerned this is nothing more than a smart home device that is not even that smart. In other words, it is a scam!
You say the screws are all the same yet ask people to keep them in order. If they are all the same, then even putting the one screw back in its original place it can be cross threaded. Only way to safeguard against crossthreading in plastic is, before screwing it in, you need to unscrew it while applying a little pressure until you feel/hear a little tick. That's the thread falling into place. Now, when screwing it in, it will follow the original threads.
Digital Dreams Suck! Their Support Sucks! Setup your own WirePod on a Raspberry Pi as their cloud constantly has issues. Love my Vector 2.0!
good thats youz said you are not a professional the solder job was meh
but still nice video thx
