Wax Moth Disaster S8E31

- This is one of three hives I've found in this condition. I can usually stay on top of this and prevent it. Two weeks of temps in the 100's kept me from doing my routine inspections and checking for queen right hives and hive strength. Wax Moths move in fast to a weak hive that cannot defend. This is how I deal with it. Enjoy! Channel Supporters:

Great learning video for new beekeepers!
Yes. Do as I say, not as I do. LOL 😂
Man that was one huge mess. Thx for sharing.
Hey Darren, what a mess! I think the little marks make the wooden ware look cool. Real beekeeping equipment. Good luck with your fall honey.
Wax moth patina. lol
Sweet treat for the chickens!
It was indeed. Lots of protein! Thanks for watching.
YUCK! Now that’s a motivator for being diligent about hive inspections. 😝🐝
It was a truly disgusting mess. I had two additional ones as well. 😖 With the cooler weather I’m able to get back to work winter prepping and leveling the populations.
Darren your chickens will love it. That why I never keep the wax comb and remelt all
Hey Benjamin. Yeah they were chomping down on those worms. 🐛 LOL.
good video. I clean them up a little bit, then use one in my swarm traps as bait
Hey Richard. Only a couple went to the burn pile. The rest went to scrape. None were fit to go back in to the hive as is. Too far gone.
Darren, only 1 word old buddy!! neglect 😂😝
Yup 👍
@@JeromeBeeFarm you need to retire and enjoy life more🙏🙏
😂 A few more years and hopefully I will.
I got some of that myself. Thanks for the video
The most wonderful time of the year ….not!
Wow Darren that’s just horrible…the comb is what breaks my heart!😩Dennis said to tell you they were just making your hive a “propola” box now!! Now you’re fancy!! We had one this year that we lost and wax moth got it…just heartbreaking😤😡
It happens. I try to stay more on top of it, but was just too hot for me there for a couple weeks. It was a truly disgusting mess. I had two additional ones as well. 😖 With the cooler weather I’m able to get back to work winter prepping and leveling the populations.
@@JeromeBeeFarm yeah I get the HOT!! We had more “feels like” days over 100 by mid July than we had in the last 2 years combined! And it just got worse from there! Finally this week it has been “livable” with the highs in the mid 80’s for the next 10 days or so!! All you can do is, do what you can! Just be careful out there you know how easy it is to get “bear caught” as we call it when you have a heat stroke!
Sad and nasty at the same time ! Feed for the Chickens though ! Good Luck !
Yes, not a good combination. And time consuming. I had two more like it. 😖. Still one I tossed the frames out on the ground I need to clean up. Found a queenless this weekend and got it taken care of. Still about ten more to check.
Darren's chickens ate the wax moth larvae with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.
😂
Well that'll Happen.
It will when you don’t inspect often enough to catch a declining hive. They move fast!
Wax moths are the WORST! I unfortunately learned this very early in my bee career and vowed never to let that happen again.
Hey JW. Yes they are disgusting creatures. Unfortunately I had two more like this. I caught another last weekend queenless and got it taken care of before the moths got to it. I’m enjoying this cooler weather!

Burn pile special. Yuk for sure but happy chickens. Hope you don't get any more.
It was a truly disgusting mess. I had two additional ones as well. 😖 With the cooler weather I’m able to get back to work winter prepping and leveling the populations.
Lost my last 2 hives this week to same. Been fighting lung disease for last year and couldn't get out to inspect. Will try to start up again next spring depending on financial situation.
Oh man, that’s tough. Sorry to hear that and hope you recover.
Thanks, doing better day by day just going to take time
I think I w would have thrown up if I found one like that. 🤢
It was a truly disgusting mess. I had two additional ones as well. 😖 With the cooler weather I’m able to get back to work winter prepping and leveling the populations.
You have chickens what is the issue? the queen probably was at the end of her sperm supplies and was failing and they took over, chickens love them, so it isn't a complete loss and you get the gratification of watching them go to work.
Hey Bloke. The biggest problem for me is it takes more time to deal with and I don’t have much spare time. It was a truly disgusting mess. I had two additional in this same state that I discovered last week. With the cooler weather I’m able to get back to work winter prepping and leveling the populations.
What to do before the wax moth takes over?😊
Requeen.
Move the boxes to strong hives for protection. Add to single deep hives. Correct the queenless condition if possible. Usually that’s a reduction the hive down to one deep and add a queen. Population is key to protecting the hive.
I found 2 of my 8 hives like that? Is any of the deep bodies worth trying to save or should just burn them?
Save all the wood, don't burn it. Just a lot of scraping.
This is by far the grossest video you have ever made! 🤢 The saving grace was the chicken buffet at the end. 😊
About how long do you figure it took for that disaster to happen? I certainly hope you don't find another one like that for a good long while! I'm sure it was heartbreaking. At least you were able to take such a disaster and turn it into a very good lesson!
Yes it’s really gross. I’d say this was done in about a weeks time.
@@JeromeBeeFarm Wow! They're fast little buggers!!
