  • final jam of the women's period featuring the lovely Donna Fox, than it's switches over to the men's period in an fast skated game out of Tokyo Japan, between the T-Birds and the Bombers. Excellent camera picks up the action in a brisk pace

    Seems like they were. That's the only way we knew them here in the East. The fans from out West probably won't believe this, but Reilly, Ralphie and Liz were really good at skating red. We weren't supposed to like them, but we always appreciated their talents, and they always gave us a great game.

    This is NOT Roller Derby. This is Roller Games. Big difference.

    Thanks for posting. Almost all of the T-Bird games from '69-'73 were erased in a penny-pinching move to recycle the (rather expensive) 2" color videotape stock from week to week. It's a shame.

    Thanks, Hot Jam. I'd heard a lot about when the T-Birds went to Japan, but never got to see any video of it. I think some of the Japanese players eventually came to the States to skate with the T-Birds. By the way, I think that was Reilly at his best!

      The two skaters that joined the TBirds were Miki and Yoko.

    this game here represents the Roller games league at its best. not a lot of scripting here as there is a language barrier so the game is much more legit but still using the old school rules. The Tbirds won all of the games they skated in Japan, due to the size and better training.

    Love how the American announcer is glossing over how the normally babyface Thunderbirds are skating redshirt (bad guy persona) for the Japanese games. Must have been a little strange watching this in Southern California and seeing the typically noble manager John Hall beat up skaters in the infield for no reason. If I remember correctly, Miki Tsunoda and Yoko Sasaki skated as T-Birds in LA around 1972. There was a hyped storyline about whether or not 'the commission' would allow Miki to use his judo chops in the 'anything goes' match-race one Saturday night.

    great skating action, unfortunately Roller Games lacked in announcers over all, where's Walt Harris or Ken Kunslemen when you really need them

      Elmer Anderson was a former Roller Derby Skater who left skating to become a color commentator 1st with Roller Derby, then later permanently with Roller Games 1st as the voice of the Philadelphia Warriors. Elmer wasn't that bad in the beginning then too got totally caught up later in the theatrics of Roller Games. Overall he does make a much better color commentator then as the primary voice of the sport itself.

    I posted a link to this video on the Polearmball Web Site. Roller Derby skills are used to play Polearmball. This video is an excellent example of the quintessential skills that athletes who play Roller Derby need to know.

    It was good to see Danny Reilly in this video for he trained me to skate with the LA-T-Birds and I was an rookie for 2-years and pro just 1 year and went into Bible Collage;

    I was watching this program back in Japan when I was little. The audio was all in Japanese then. Were they airing it the US as well???? Also it it the roots of Roller Derby of today? Or is this Japanese Roller Game was a US import of Roller Derby back in the '70s? Could anyone educate me?

      I will try & break it down as best as possible. Roller Derby if you will & Roller Games were 2 different leagues or entities. Roller Derby was created in Chicago in 1935 & pretty much stood on it's own till 1962 when Roller Games was created. It succeeded Derby which in of itself folded in 1973. Games lasted for 2 more years before it too went belly up. There were attempts made to revive both Games & Derby with limited success. Myself I prefer Roller Derby because simply there was much leas theatrics concentrating more on skating. Not taking away anything from the skating talent or abilities of the Games skaters either as quite a few jumped ship to Games from Derby & sometimes a few returned to Derby later as well. No different then any other employment when you see what the other side of the fence can offer compensation & benefit wise.

      No both Roller Derby or Games as we knew it long gone. Today played very differently,. Great to see it going legit. Bad part is too many rules slow the game down. It honestly doesn't resemble Roller Derby @ all minus using a Jammer to score. Pass that it's not Roller Derby period!
