Fixing a leaky Grohe faucet

  • How I changed the cartridge (45883000) to fix a leaky faucet. Note that it matters which side (left or right) you are fixing when ordering the replacement cartridge.
The Seabury handles (18732) need a plastic piece which gives friction/pressure to the handle when you push it back onto the cartridge. Make sure you have that piece. I added a picture at the end of the video

I understood that it was important to get the correct cartridge, right or left. When I ordered the part from Grohe before viewing this video, I was careful to select the one that said Cartridge, right. Grohe sent me a left one and when I contacted them they said that I ordered the wrong one because on their website, "right" means right-closing. Since it was "obviously" my error, the only way I could get the correct one would be to order a new one and If I sent them the wrong one back I could get a refund. Fortunately I have cross-type handles so I was able to use this video to replace the failing one with the one I had and now I have two working handles even if they both turn in the same direction.

This video really helped. The job was a bear. The stem broke off in the lever handle while I was trying to rock it off. In my version the handle had metal flutes that fit over the flutes on the valve stem. No plastic on either side. The lever handle did have a hole which looked like it was made for a locknut/screw but there wasn't one present. The exploded parts diagram for the Grohe Seabury faucet does show a set screw which requires an Allen wrench, but I didn't have that configuration
I couldn't find the details of my handle configuration online so I'll try to describe. The escutcheon rests on the countertop and the "cap" screws to the escutcheon covering most of the cartridge except for the fluted stem at the top. I then put the finished chrome "ring" on my lever and there was another brass fitting which I threaded onto the lever. I also had a semi-circular, metal, retention ring which slid into a groove at the base of the lever. The retention ring kept the brass fitting and finishing "ring" from sliding off the lever. I placed the lever on top of the cartridge valve and pressed down. The brass fitting was then screwed into the cap and the finishing ring was screwed onto the brass fitting so that it looks like the ring and cap are almost one piece. The retention ring keeps my lever from lifting off the stem.
My cartridge was stuck in the side valve assembly. Similar to you, I had to take the cartridge and side valve out from the cabinet in one piece. I put a 17mm socket on the cartridge and the side valve assembly in a vise. I put a cheater bar on the socket handle and was finally able to remove the cartridge. This turned into a 3-4 hour job trying to figure out how this all was put together and trying to get the corroded parts to loosen up. I don't think I would have finished without your help. Good job.
