  • After Anahim Lake, the pavement turns into gravel road. It was like that all the way down before it becomes pavement to Bella Coola... but before reaching that, we had to pass through the infamous "Hill" or Heckman pass. With 10kms of steep, brake-grinding switchbacks(total of about 70kms top to bottom), up to 18% grades and 11 notable curves, it was an amazing driving experience one must not take lightly! we took a break in the middle to calm ourselves as we were literally driving right beside a cliff. It was also the highest point of the highway at 5,000ft above sea level. It felt like we completed a marathon once we reached the bottom. We would like to share our experience with YOU if your travels ever bring you this way! Coming down it was nice and sunny, not necessarily "warm" but chilly. On our way back up as you see on the thumbnail, it became cloudy and rainy with temperatures dropping to single digits! always be prepared for sudden weather changes. Taken with my GoPro 7. For peace of mind, it would be ideal if you have all terrain tires on, but if you have a sedan, just make sure your all seasons are in good condition before driving down.

I have seen many videos and I have heard even more stories about this road, however, I had no reason to drive to Bella Coola since it is a dead end road. Anyway, about one and a half years ago, I was asked to deliver a pick-up truck to Bella Coola in the middle of winter. I am still wondering why people make such a big deal about this road. Yes, it is steep, yes it has switchbacks and yes it is gravel. No reason for taking pictures or videos that really don't show anything. It's all click-bait!!!!

I agree, other than the viewpoint in the beginning or at the bottom of the hill, there's really no point in stopping for pics or vids, but a bucket list destination for me nonetheless.

Technically, Highway 20 does not dead-end in Bella Coola, because there is BC Ferries service from there to Port Hardy.

Believe it or not, that long drop-off next to the steep section of this highway is called Young Creek Canyon. You truly start going down the hill after you cross the bridge over Young Creek. And the drop down the canyon is as much as _320 metres._ You _do not_ want to be tempted to look down into the canyon, because it will give you quite a bit of vertigo.

@@alecdelacroooz I do not know in which minute of this video you encounter that maximum drop, but it is at about 52.429857°N 125.876455°W, just before you hit the two hairpins prior to the 15% downslope.

Thanks for this video and commentary it was informative for a trip there I have coming in beginning of Sept. We have about 10 motorcycles coming this way and this gives us a good idea what to expect.

Thank you for viewing! After Anahim Lake, the road becomes gravel all the way down after the Hill. I also have another video regarding the gas stops along Hwy 20 so you won't get stranded especially since you guys will be travelling via motor bikes! also watch out for sudden weather changes! it was sunny and warm when I drove down. Foggy and rainy when I drove back up. Safe travels!

@@alecdelacrooozit was great with one exception. The road in and out of Bella Coola was closed due to fires. So we ended up going further north to Prince Rupert and catching the ferry from there. Will be trying again in 2024. Thanks for asking.
