    It's about time a commercial product got made that could do this. I've been hacking solutions like this for years, glad to see something a little more polished available. Thanks for sharing, Caleb!

    I know this is an old video, but I recently purchased the Electric Ray E1 to run my Sony a6000 as a B Cam for a live event I had to record. I did a 4hr continuous recording using the iFootage Electric Ray and a 13000mah USB Battery Bank and at the 4hr mark, the battery level was at 81% and the 6000 never overheated and thanks to the Playmemories hack, I never had a record limit issue.

      @@Moshe_3mm4nu31 I used the Electric Ray E1 with the supplied dummy battery in the kit i bought. I was not using the USB port nor a sony battery.

      The iFootage Electric Ray E1 converts the 5 volt 2 amp output of the USB Battery Bank to 8.4 Volts/2 amps exiting the device to power the camera. You plug the dummy battery into the E1 to power your camera.

    I've been doing this with my GH2 for the past 9 months, but with a more diy solution. I have a stepup dc-dc module and I use two 5v 2A batteries connected in parallel. Then I convert them with the module to 8.4v , hook up a dummy and its good to go. with my two 8000mah batteries I can get two to three days of shooting.

  • @gcprost

    Yes, this is and inexpensive option and it works reliably. I used this for a couple of years. I have just recently transitioned to another solution, which again is inexpensive and seems very reliable so far. I am using the Small Rig NPF battery plates (EB2404 and Feel World dummy battery for GH5). It is a much more elegant and simple solution.

    Something to check for when using external power solutions on Panasonic cameras:
    - Is the touchscreen still working fine? Touch completely stops working when my G7 cameras are powered with a cheap brick.
    - Does the external supply introduce extra any image artifacts? I've sometimes seen a raised black level in vertical lines with mid to high ISO or slow shutter speeds when the input power wasn't perfect.

    I remember using dummy battery solution with my old Canon 7D, but you would imagine that in their "latest and greatest" model Panasonic would allow direct charging from the USB power bank, like in my beloved Samsung NX1.

    • @wittsdream
      @wittsdream 7 лет назад

      Exactly! I am using the RAV Power 26800 mAh on my Samsung NX1, and I don't have to worry about running out of juice, especially on wilderness hikes where I won't have access to an AC charging outlet for a number of days. This particular powerbank can run for 9 straights days without a re-charge, which is plenty for my hiking jaunts to power the Samsung, a GPS unit or my cell phone if I have coverage.

      That's right, Sony mirrorless cameras are known for rubish batteries. Luckily with my Samsung I can shoot whole day with a single battery as well... unless I start making timelapses. I suppose it's the same situation with the GH5.

    I own a Case Logic power bank which actually powers up my GH5, but the weirdest thing happens. The moment I zoom out the lens, the monitor goes black until I return back to the regular view. Listening to your video might have revealed the problem to me. You indicated that the power back should have a 2A output; I just checked mine and guess what? It's 1A. Thanks very much for pointing that out.

    So the link in B&H was sold out and had to order though Amazon. I ordered the black one but only ordered the converter as I had a dummy battery already. Unfortunately when it arrived that is when I realized the plugs did not match. So I just ordered the actual Sony coupler from iFootage. I recommend buying the whole kit at $78 as I ended up spending an additional $37 (w/ shipping) buying it individually. I'm guessing there is an adapter I can buy but I'd rather have the coupler.

    Caleb can you think of a way to use the ifootage with the Canon M50? There doesn’t seem to be an E-12 dummy, except the one Canon makes. Canon’s does have a DC input, so maybe make up a cable to connect it to the ifootage DC output? What do you think of that approach? Do you know the DC connector sizes it would need to work?

    Any one run into problems using this on a Canon 7dmkII ? I’ve bought the Electric Ray E1 recently and tried using my Anker PowerCore 26800mAh Power Bank, everything powers up until I take the first photo then the low battery indicator starts flashing and the camera turns off. The power bank is pretty powerful and fully charged and practically brand new in terms of battery health.

  • @MattGrover
    @MattGrover 7 лет назад +2

    This is a really interesting little product. I see in the video that the battery level shows on the GH5 screen as if it had a standard battery in there, have you noticed if it still gives a reasonably accurate level when using the Ray and a power bank?
    Also, having a quick look at larger power banks, do you know if ones with a higher than 2A output are suitable? Such as the Jackery Titan? Cheers :)

    • @Brixar24
      @Brixar24 7 лет назад +3

      I'd think that the battery level on the screen isn't accurate because the device gets (hopefully) stable 5v from the Powerbank and boosts it up to 8,4ish V. Battery charge is normally measured through the Voltage, which shouldn't change. Long story short probably no.
      The Amp rating on a constant Voltage source (like the Powerbank) usually defines the maximum Amperage which can be drawn. So a higher Amperage Output isn't a problem as the device simply draws not the maximum.

    Also, this is a good solution if you can plug in an 'Anker' type battery, AND also power off mains. i.e. charge the usb battery backup, so if someone trips on your mains, your battery takes over. =>

    • @dslrvideoshooter
      @dslrvideoshooter  7 лет назад +6

      Here is why this unit is "better" than using the camera's USB jack:
      1) Since the USB power source is charging the battery (via the USB jack on the camera) and not powering the camera, you're losing power due to inefficiency. That same USB power source would give you more power longer if used as a direct power source.
      2) That charging of the internal battery with cause some amounts of heat from the battery. This could push some cameras into overheating.
      3) Many of Sony's cameras eat up a lot of power fast, so the USB jack on the side won't keep up with the amount of power needed. My a6500 will eat up a battery even if I start at 100% with USB connected.
      All in all, this and other direct USB options are more efficient and will last longer than using the USB jack on the camera.

      Since the dummy battery coupler is connected via a wire that goes into the iFootage unit, how does the battery compartment close on the bottom of the camera with a wire sticking out of it? Wouldn't that leave the battery area exposed to the elements if that door has to be kept opened in order to accommodate the coupler wire? What am I missing?

    • @GlueFactoryBJJ
      @GlueFactoryBJJ 7 лет назад

      wittsdream - I can't speak for other cameras, but the Panasonic GH series has a "cable port" with a rubber cover (for when not using external power) so you can close the battery door when using an external power battery adapter. Panasonic included it with the circa 2012 GH3.

      Siyad A I would assume the same as the G5, with the dummy battery adapter for the G7.

    Would this work with the BMP4K?

    • @moeshickenyay
      @moeshickenyay 5 лет назад

      I just took a V-mount to Sony Np-f970 converter plate, with the DTap out connection, which puts out 12- 18volt and up to 8amp, to a DTap to 12V connection to my BMP4K, and 48dollars later had a cheap BMP4K power solution, Two sony NP-F970 batteries brought it to 97dollars. Took awhile,for the plate to ship, four weeks, but has been reliable and lasts 6 plus hours of constant filming.

    is there any way to power a camera from the mains, please?

    • @anitasimstrammell835

      Why not use a standard mains to USB adapter? Then run a USB wire from that to this featured device?

    Is it risky for your camera? I am planning to use a dummy battery with a power bank in GH5. Any opinion guy? Thank you.
