      you mean the video? There are several live recordings of this song from 1970 but I'm guessing you mean the video from BBC "Doing their thing"?
      I disagree, there are better live versions of the song. I understand it is nice to see them play but I recommend the version recorded in Denmark 1972. A bit rawer sound but hits the nerve but Ritchie does a better solo.

    Deep Purple is one of the "Big Three" superstar British pioneers of hard rock in the early 70s, alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. (Many, myself included, like to talk about a "Big Four" and also include Uriah Heep.) Deep Purple were chronologically the first of the three, debuting in 1968, and this song is the magnum opus of their fourth studio album "In rock" from 1970 (yes, that Mount Rushmore pastiche is the actual album artwork). This was also their first studio album (and second album overall) to feature their second and most classic lineup, the so-called Mark 2: Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards, 1941-2012) and Ian Paice (drums). "In rock" is rightly regarded as one of THE most influential albums in the history of hard rock (in my native Sweden we make a clear distinction between hard rock and heavy metal: all heavy metal is hard rock but not all hard rock is heavy metal). The song "Child in time" is lyrically inspired by the then ongoing Vietnam war, but the actual music started out as in improvised joke slash theft. While rehearsing, organ genius Jon Lord (arguably the greatest, and definitely the most legendary keyboard player in rock history) started jamming on an organ riff that was actually a slowed-down version of a pop song called "Bombay calling" by the band It's A Beautiful Day. His bandmates, unaware of this, simply started jamming with him, and the whole song came together very quickly. Coincidentally, It's A Beautiful Day later repaid the compliment by basing a song of their own off of Deep Purple's "Wring that neck".
    Yes, that IS Ian Gillan himself hitting all the high notes. In fact, this exceptional singer had only just recorded the title role of the album version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Jesus Christ superstar" - that's how good he is. He did, however, decline to tour with the musical, choosing to prioritize Deep Purple - in hindsight a very, very wise career move. Deep Purple very quickly became one of THE biggest bands of the early 70s - not least in Sweden, where the band held, and still holds, the same level of fame as Led Zeppelin does in the US. In 1972 they secured their place as one of rock history's greatest for all eternity, with the release of their most famous song, featuring THE first riff that every electric guitarist learns, bar none: "Smoke on the water".
    Despite all members' undeniable genius, the band was, at the time, unable to keep a steady lineup for very long. When they disbanded, for the time being, in 1976, only Jon Lord and Ian Paice were the only ever-present members. The following years, the members continued their careers in other bands, all of whom would also achieve fame and success of varying degree: Rainbow, Gillan and, above all, future super-megastars Whitesnake.
    In 1984, the classic Mark 2 lineup reuinted once more (at the time, Ian Gillan had just made an album as a member of Deep Purple's former rivals Black Sabbath), and the resulting album is often referred to as one of the greatest comeback releases in rock history: "Perfect strangers". Sadly, the five were still unable to stay together permanently. More specifically, the rivalry and enmity remained between Ian Gillan and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. The latter is famous for two things: being a musical genius, and for being one of the most eccentric, not to say offputtingly toxic, individuals in music. So, the lineup continued to change. Nevertheless, the band as such have survived to this very day, and keeps touring as hard as ever as well as releasing new music on a, fairly, regular basis. Their current lineup consists of three classic members: Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice; as well as keyboard player Don Airey (who has played with more or less everybody who is anybody in hard rock, from Jethro Tull to Judas Priest), and guitarist Simon McBride, who joined as recently as last year. The band's former guitarist since 1994, American Steve Morse (formerly of the band Kansas) decided to leave because Deep Purple's heavy touring schedule is impossible to combine with taking care of his wife who sadly is battling stage four cancer.

    Great to see the surprise on your faces! Yes, Ian Gillan sang everything here. He's the guy on the left of the Mount Rushmore picture. Next to him, the one who looks like Beethoven, is the guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore. The organist, Jon Lord, has the moustache. Sadly, he died in 2012. Roger Glover, bassist, is next along - he looks quite like Rod Stewart. And the guy to the right is Ian Paice, master drummer - he usually wears glasses. The reason the song is so intense and emotional is that it was written to reflect the war in Vietnam.

      It should also be pointed out that the screaming he does in this song, which he did Live for several years, is part of the reason why his voice has been shot for a while, along with smoking, drinking, messing around with women...lots of women...

      @CliffinAZ 7 месяцев назад

      @@CB-xr1eg it happened with a lot of great singers from around that time, unfortunately. Robert Plant was an even more extreme case, IMO. By 1972 his voice was permanently damaged, and by 1975 he’s totally lost the ability to hit any of those high notes. Same causes-although in Plant’s case, I’d argue that what probably made things a lot worse and caused a lot of irreparable damage was attempting to sing a show in the beginning of ‘73 with a full-on flu (Sheffield). That will permanently damage a singer’s vocal cords-especially attempting THAT kind of singing with a flu! In Plant’s defense, given how things were in those days I’d imagine he would have been pressured to go on stage sick or not…

The audience weren't allowed to react too much as it was for tv. Their live concert length recording cd, called Made in Japan has so many amazing songs.
    You could try tracks like Lazy /Smoke on the Water/Highway Star/Livin' Wreck/Fireball/Demon's Eye/The Mule/NO No No.? Pictures Of Home.

    Nice reaction,! To have an idea about how they look , there's a very good live version from this song. The universe of Deep Purple amazing songs are so rich, maybe the live version could be done... watching a live version of others very good songs as: Smoke on the water, Highway Star, Strange Kind of Woman, Lazy, Perfect Strangers. there is a channel here on RUclips, Deep Purple Official, with best live versions there. More reactions to Deep Purple, please!

    As a note of trivia - Child in Time was first played live in Sept 1969 by Deep Purple at the beginning of their concert - Concerto for Group and Orchestra and Tim Rice upon hearing Ian Gillan`s vocals asked him to be the vocalist on the original studio album Jesus Christ Superstar that was released in 1970 - Both JC Superstar and DR in Rock were monster albums around the world in 1970/71

    Saw Deep Purple before they were Deep Purple. Roger Glover (bass) went to my school and was in a band with Ian Gillan (vocals) before two bands merged to form this outfit. Needless to say they were pretty popular during my schooldays! 😄

    Ladies, loving your reactions of three generations, and as everybody has said, you need to watch the Live version It Will Blow Your Mind, and one of my all time favourites by them, Deep Purple what an Line up, and amazing back catalogue, another great track is Burn🔥 Paice’s phenomenal drumming, Blackmore and Jon Lords solo half way through, and Gillian’s mind blowing vocals, It’s one of them songs that if you hear it in your car, you cannot help but put your foot to the pedal which I am going to have to listen to now. 😂 Keep On Rockin!! 🤘😎🎸💀👊

    It was definitely Ian Gillan on vocals that did all of the singing. I had the privilege to see them reunited in 1985 and he still performed this song as good as this.

    Ladies, you really need to catch the live BBC version. Jon Lord on the Hammond is simply stunning, not to mention Ian Gillan’s voice. Try also the live version of Smoke On The Water, featuring the most famous guitar riff in rock history. Highway Star, Strange Kind of Woman, Space Truckin and Perfect Strangers are also brilliant.
    Welcome to the Deep Purple rabbithole!

    The lead singer, Ian Gillan was the first star in the musical "Jesus Christ, Super Star" !! He told his mates after the "Live in Japan 1972" album that he had to stop singing this song in concert, because it was damaging his voice. He still does perform this song , but it's a more subdued version. Love Deep Purple !!
