Colour vision is mainly a function of the macular area and therefore central visual fields. A red pin is useful to check for central scotomas, enlarged blind spot, macular sparing etc.
I would like to mention about your notice: "to check with glasses if required' I think the patient might see the object twice (doipled) because of the frame effect.. (this wont be happen with contact lens)
