Phil Carman wasn't just another player; he was seen as a superstar in the making. But while fans might have thought of him as the most thrilling player they'd seen in decades, there was a major catch- he was prone to serious trouble, his temper tantrums nearly costing him his entire career!
Pure head case, saw him years after he retired at a club event at Vic Park, all he talked about was hitting people, his eyes would light up when talked about it, he seemed oblivious to the fact that it had cost him his career and a premiership.
Won more games and did more 400,s than the negative comments writers, was Dermott,s faverite player , DERM,s first game was fabulous phils last game, thanks for the excitement and the thrills phil Carmen, enjoyed the ride and watching you play, all the best, Go pies
We had plenty of nutters back then. I remember him mostly for the boundary umpire incident at Moorabin. Weird, I don't ever recall even thinking about a boundary umpire.
Best footballer I ever saw - and by some considerable margin.
Fabulous Phil. Oh and the pic at 0.47 is Max Richardson ( Pies captain in 77 )
He good landscaper too
Angry and tough as Nails on field nice guy off the field
He had white line fever😂
Superstar dermie Type maybe even better
He cost Collingwood the flag in 77!
For that alone we all love him.
They still should've won without him
I was at the game he head butted the umpire
Rubbish. Collingwood led at 3/4 time by almost 5 goals against a team that had kicked 4 - and had been held goal-less for about 70 minutes. The draw was just a choke by a perfectly capable team - I never forgave Hafey for blaming Carman: if he'd taken responsibility, as he should have done, and made the players on the field wear the result, Collingwood might not have had 3 more dismal endings in 79, 80 and 81. Also, of course, dumping the greatest player ever to have pulled on a black and white jumper at the end of 1978 and getting "Knees" Edwards was just mind-numbingly stupid.
@brendanreilly8860 I agree thats why I didn't like Hafey for blaming him and then ditching him
The VFL in the seventies .
I didn't like Tom Hafey for getting rid of him at the end of 78 it cost us 79 80 81
Hafey had a big clear out at the end of '78, moved on Len Thompson & Max Richardson as well. They were great players who were ageing but often went missing in big finals matches.
Not securing Quinlan from footscray to replace Phil late 1978, was an even bigger fuck up from our inept board
Should have stayed in SA😂
