When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

You can tell the actors actual care about their roles in the movie, they even refer to the Jeagers as she’s just like in the movie

Anyone else feel sorry for the kaiju that had to invade Australia? Box jellyfish, tasmanian devils, cassowaries...poor thing was probably begging for death by the time Striker Eureka showed up.
Del Toro = Hero
I just wish people would stop comparing the Jaegers to the Eva Units. Piloting system, build and composition are entirely different. This is anime inspired, not referenced. Guillermo del Toro is working very hard to get mecha into mainstream audience.

I'm surprised they would allow a film like this in cinemas over there. I was always under the impression that Australia was very strict when it cames to things like violence in media.
It also creates an avenue for character development and interaction that is typically not there in robot/monster movies. That innovation helps set PR apart from the Japanese cartoons and monster movies that inspired it, while simultaneously embracing them.

the two people act like the two hemispheres of the brain.
From what I've seen in the clips and just assumptions you need the standard check list of a hero, or a soldier rather; Bravery, brains never hurt anyone, combat skills are probably best. Also the two pilots need to be synced mentally.
A single person can't handle the pressure. It explains in the movie.

awkward, because he says that he doesn't want the Jaegers to look like any other "anime" or "movie", but he clearly drew design ideas from Supreme Commander (the game).
You didn't watch the movie did you? The '2500 tons of awesome' was Dr. Geiszler talking about Knifehead, the first Kaiju that Gipsy Danger fights in the movie.

A Jaeger is about 7000 tons, actually.
Striker, Mark 5 : Big chest for air missile, requiring his T-16 Angel Wings for balance and speed enhancement. The one and only, the fastest, most modern and strongest, well balanced Jaeger ever built. 50% of his capabilities forces a Cat 5 Kaiju to cry out for help.
Crimson : 3 arms, small head shape, eye-catching crimson body, incredibly agile and fluent movements. Requiring 3 pilots to command her and her famous "Thundercloud formation".
Gipsy, Mark 3 : Detachable head, requiring her neck to be heavily covered in her body and 3 metal stems sprouting from her back to protect the back of her head as well as the sides. One turbine vortex in the middle of her chest indicating she's analog and powered by nuclear reactor. 2 plasmacasters and dual chain swords absolutely annihilate Kaijus.
Cherno, Mark 1 : The oldest of them all, his uniqueness allows him to survive for more than 6 years as an old and outdated Mark 1. The nuclear reactor acts as a fake head with 2 fake eyes on the side. Powerful piston fists accompanied by his heavy armor for better resistance, sacrificing his speed in the process. A literal walking skyscraper tank.
Just by the look alone, you can already tell the 4 main Jaegers apart. Even the background ones such as Tacit Ronnin, Coyote Tango or even Romeo Blue are also notably unique.
Very much looking forward to seeing this movie at the cinema! Its one of the ones I've been waiting to see since it was first announced and it takes something "different" to catch my attention I guess.
I was wondering if the alien creatures had actually been given a name and if anyone knows what they are called? Usually if they're considered main characters then they're given some kind of name; either in-movie (Xenomorphs from the Alien series) or not (Nocturnal Hammerheads from Pitch Black).

Gypsy Danger: sense it is suppose to be and American Jaeger. I think because of that he represents a human's strength. So out of all the Jaeger he happens to be the most flawed.
There is official proof from Gipsy Danger's blueprints that the Jaeger weighs 7,080 tons, I'd post a link but RUclips frowns upon that. I assure you the KAIJU weigh 2,500 tons.

Fighter jet needs 2 people to operate, a tank needs 3-4, what makes you think a 80 foot, 2500 tons machine needs less than 2 person to operate?

Taken from the prequel comic, Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero, the reason why they need two or more pilots is because syncing the human brain to control the Jaegers takes too much of a toll and can kill the person, while sharing that link with another person lessons its impact.

Yes. It was noted that the only two pilots who were able to stand the neural load by themselves were Raleigh and Stacker. Its not impossible, but its very rare. Herc even mentioned that he knew of only one other person besides Stacker to have powered a Jaeger by himself. Which is Raleigh. Like I said, it is not entirely impossible
In a featurette where Del Toro explains why they need two pilots, there are clips of the movie shown in which it is also explained why they need two pilots.

Also in real life there was an experiment where they used two neural signals to control a software simulation and it turned out the software was able to average out more "noise" vs when they used one neural signal.
