Ever feel like you're being GASLIT by a MAJOR SARDINE COMPANY?? Today I'm having a taste test to see whether King Oscar's Tiny Tots are in any way different from their standard 12-22 pack brislings in EVOO. They've been leading us on for far too long!
On test:
King Oscar Tiny Tots
King Oscar Brisling Sardines in EVOO
TUNE IN HE'S TOTALLY GONNA PUKE
I doubt that….
Can't wait, yo!
Why would he puke ? Explain yourself
He ate the "Gooey Duck" and seemed OK (at least on camera), didn't he?...... I rest my case! ;)
Only JabbedSlowboner would puke on the dines.🤣
This was not a review.
This was real Investigative Journalism. I'm talking Pulitzer Prize caliber stuff.
*sips can oil*
The Tiny Tots have a hint of Norwegian superstition, it makes them better.
They’re definitely the same product in different wrappers. When the company first started selling in the US there were three brands: KO, Tiny Tots, and Spirit of Norway. SoN was retired about 20 years ago. But the following behind the TT brand was too strong to take that packaging off the shelf. Legends abound, but at the end of the day the only difference is the wrapper.
The master has spoken.
nice! can you give me your opinion... herring / sardines / mackerel / herring-- can you rank them from least fishy to most fishy tasting? I want to start out with least fishy first!
@@XYLEAN594 In my opinion trying to find the least fishy fish to try first is sort of like asking for a patty melt that isn’t greasy. Maybe you don’t really want a patty melt. Fish are fishy, it’s a defining characteristic. I also don’t know that one can legitimately speak to which type is more or less fishy, because there are more and more significant variables than just type of fish. How any given fish is handled from catch to can has a larger effect on flavor, imo, than type of fish. Taste is also a very personal experience. No one else can tell you what you like. Start with whatever is most easily obtainable. If you like it, try something else next, you might like that, too. If you don’t like it, try something else next, you might like that, instead. It’s a can of fish, don’t overthink it.
@@danatrainbowtomatoes5979 well I mean i've tried seea bass and it is much less "fishy / strong tasting" than trout is... so i was just trying to get a gauge of flavor strength, but thx for ue input
@@XYLEAN594 I think it’s fine to say some sea bass is less fishy than some trout. But I don’t think it’s a universal truth that all sea bass is less fishy than all trout. The same is true of sardines, mackerel, and herring. Some sardines are fishier than some mackerel is fishier than some herring is fishier than some sardines. And if we try to say, hypothetically speaking, in an instance when each fish is handled expertly at every step, which Platonic ideal of sardine, mackerel, and herring is the least fishy, it still strikes me as odd. We never talk about which breed of cattle is the least beefy, which kind of chicken is least chickeny. Which onion is the least oniony. Which grape is the most winey. It’s a question particular to fish.
My boyfriend: I bet she's cheating on me
Me: *watching sardine videos*
Btw I tried sardines. They taste like fish, I'm astonished.
funny how real food does that!
@@ronschlorff7089 I really thought they would be gross based on how people talk about them. But they just taste exactly like what you'd think a fish would taste like.
@@alicedoesntknow_ Yes, some are easier to get down than others. I like the KO Tiny Tots (brisling) they seem mild and not fishy at all; and are easiest to eat like Matt does with chop sticks, being small in their little packed tin. Just started eating them again after long time (used to be my camping food when I back-packed) and am waiting to see the health benefits!! Enjoy! : )
they taste more delicious to me, especially in olive oil.
It’s named from some Norse folklore thing. For fun and more diverse marketing.
My mom introduced me to Tiny Tots as a child many decades ago. Good to know they’re the same as the red label, but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the tots.
Kids want thier own special things ❤
I am SHOCKED at KO’s audacity! Oh wait…I’m over it. I have loved them both and now I know why. Detective Carlson, you have gotten to the bottom of it. Good job! I’ll catch you Saturday!
When I was a wee lad, I was always attracted to foods that had children dancing in Eastern European folk garb. Suckered me in every time.
“Those fish aren’t gonna make it to school’. I lol’d
WHAT are we even doing here?!
I've noticed you know it's a real Matthew Carlson video when you hear that groovy synth music in the back. Matthew hook us up with the Canned Fish Files soundtrack please
Agreed!
Matt once agreed with me that the answer to his opening question "Might" be 42. And I agree with you guys re: the music. Is it his own composition? Matt?
Most of the music is mine, unless it obviously sounds like an old television theme.
Matt's lava lite medleys to eat sardines by.🤔
Okay, now I'm just lost in Deen Land again, lol!
I mean. Don't we all?
This perfectly answers my question that's been plaguing me the last couple weeks. I stood in the WalMart aisle for like 15 minutes trying to figure out this mystery, to no avail.
Got so stoked when you started shoveling them down with the sauce! Love the action!
the genuine, earnest knowledge and enjoyment of sardines. the music. the AMBIENCE. suggesting we should season the sardines for the sharks. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode of CFF 🐟
because I stumbled across your videos I went out and bought a can of sardines for the first time in my life. I loved them. they are everything I wish canned tuna was, but isn't. thank you canned sardine man.
Thank you for your comment, it means a lot to me.
I'm really liking the King Oscar Mediterranean ...they are my current favorite. But that could change at any moment though.
can you give me your opinion... herring / sardines / mackerel / herring-- can you rank them from least fishy to most fishy tasting? I want to start out with least fishy first!
@@XYLEAN594 I know this is an old post and hopefully you're well along your fish journey, but for me mackerel have zero fishy flavor, it's like canned tuna except more tender (Definitely make King Oscar Medit style your first! They're fantastic). Next is sardines, still barely any fishy taste. The thing that weirds people out is the skin and bones, not a fishy taste (however you won't even know they're there when eating). Herring does have a very fishy taste, I don't enjoy it.
Who is Neptune now?You solved Tiny Tots.🤔
That's a dinosaur... uh, Matt.😗
You're getting drunk on sardines again....😆
Still think we need some Deen Lord T-Shirts. I’d buy one.
my god, that dolphin sound effect when you opened the can was priceless. you're the man, matt.
You gotta love a man that's not afraid to sip olive oil from the tin! Great music in the background. Sounds like interplanetary space travel! Make it louder! 😂 Lol
Really vibing on your choice of tunes!
You just reminded me of a night I drank WAY too much and thought it would be good to even it out with a couple cans of sardines at 3am...then puked them out. Trust me, you never want to puke sardines. (Great vid though, gonna go wolf some down now)
I’m ovah here on the Left coast,
In the East SF Bay,
And
I am eagerly awaiting the ‘dine reveal Saturday
LIVE n stuff.
And they have even smaller ones! Lol! The cross packed… why aren’t those the tiny tots?! Lol
Was gonna comment on how you never drink the juices, but never mind.
i noticed some synths in your other videos, if you do the music for your own videos first off thats dope second off it fits super well third off it really makes your videos feel complete. keep it up! it reminds me of the stuff that Tastuya Takahashi does for Korg
Different wrapper same sardines but you got to eat two cans in one sitting:-)
Cross pack king Oscar's man
This was great😄
Thanks for making it.
Tiny Tots= Shark Chum
Very informative video - and that outro is hilarious.
Hey, somebody told me about your videos, I checked some out, you're killing it Jon.
Thanks so much, MC!
Great review ! I had no idea they were the same.
Olive oil cheers! Lol pinky out...
Nice! Been waiting for you to do this one
Tiny tots have always been my go to. Haven't had or seen the other can.
I'm just at the start of the video right now, but as far as I know Tiny Tots are just how the regular ones are branded where I live. I haven't seen that red package you have here.
in on the ground floor this time around 😎
Me too!
Yeah, I recently had another can of tiny tots after thinking they were ok when first trying them a couple months ago. But this most recent can, I thought they were awful. Wonderful video as usual, Carlson.
Me too man, I had a can of tiny tots for the first time and they were way too stinky for me, I couldn’t finish the can. I’m enjoying a meditation style can of king Oscars and it’s way more enjoyable
Had some tots from Fred Meyer just this morning. They did not disappoint.
The can details look identical too
I always felt the tiny tots are a little more tender and sometimes seem less fishy. Just found your channel I love it man. Thank you
Party time indeed!!🤘❤️🌞
Idk why I'm sooooo terrified to try these fish. But I bought a can because your videos.
Thanks for these videos its always nice to see im not the only one enjoying sardines in this world
King Oscar also has a Cross-Pack that has 24-38 Brisling Sardines in extra virgin olive oil in the same size 3.75 oz. can, delicious. They come with a Gold paper wrap, obviously their finest.
Ive never seen them, gold paper wrapper? Where o where did you buy them. Please be store specific.
THIS CONTENT IS BANGING! Just bought my first pack of King Oscar in Olive Oil. Excited to try them soon. Thanks for guiding me/holding my hand in the sardine world 🌎 🐟
that oscar has quite the racket going.
edit: also, good call on the spoon to contain the espinaler.
Never have seen Tiny Tots in the ‘burgh. 😎
I have both on hand right now. I'll do the same tonight!
Yeah, let me know what you think.
@@CannedFishFiles If I ever get off of my butt,I'll start posting in the subreddit. Might be a good start, point of comparison.
Thanks a lot Because of your video King Oscar is discontinuing the Tiny Tots brand!
Love your shark impression! That’s exactly how they are, lost in ‘Dine land. Lol. Love your edits! Nice work :)
Matt bruh I think the difference between Tiny Tots and regular King Oscar Dines is that Tiny Tots are smoked and on average, smaller/younger. I say this after trying both. Your love of the Dine has won me over to the wonderful world of canned fish.
Matt, I’m sorry to flood you with comments, and other c..p. I have ADHD, and if I don’t get such thoughts out the door, they disappear from my brain. Please bear with me. I love your videos and watch them all the time.
Comment as much as you want Steve!
Hey you know a good trick? Have the Tiny Tots come in Tapatio sauce! Lol
24 seconds and counting Mathew chadson
lol
How are you not a household name yet? Omg!!! I love these videos!!!
Dude? Is that the Twin Peaks soundtrack?
Spectacular!
You know, it is this music from some old CBC children's show about reading. I guess from the early/mid 80s. The music was WAYYY too creepy for what it was. "Read All About It"
Hey Matt.. You hit it on the head with the Deens, Sauce in the Spoon! I like to add a chunk of Chedder.. Deens, Sauce and.Chedder! Nothing better.
You are hilarious Mathew! Thank you! I wish more people would see your videos!!! You Mom must be so proud of you!
Going through the comments after some time off... My mother is actually embarrassed of my videos! I make a pretty good living at my day job and I think she is still disappointed I didn't become a doctor. Moms, amirite!
@@CannedFishFiles your mom doesnt have the dines mindset, she'll learn or be left behind
That's some blistering journalism on a fishy subject.
Makes me so hungry..lol .From Stanton CA to Sapulpa OK.Thank you 😊
That last line of ur Spider-Man tiny tot song added with that priceless smile had me lol! Cheers
It literally says produced by king oscar on the back loll
Like the freakin cookie monster. Its like he was raised by Quint from jaws.
I am glad that this was discussed. I have also felt that Tiny Tots and the regular can of sardines are the same. I think since the Tiny Tots usually costs a few dollars more and that this is all marketing.
i bought all the different sardines they had at my local Walmart and noticed the same thing, that they're exactly the same on the back of the wrapper
Invalid test, Mateo! You didn't change your cutlery between cans. I will be informing the International Fish Review Board! Swindle!
Cutlery!? Cutlery!!! LOL! I've heard of chop sticks (like Matt usually uses 99% of the time) described as a lot of things (some not nice) but never "cutlery"!! Made my deens come out of my nose "whilst" I was eating them (there's an image for you all); sort of like when you suddenly laugh "whilst" drinking a coke!! To be totally fair to you, he did use that big-ass spoon; I've got to get one too!! Good one! A real laugh that!! :D
They’re 3.33 at my local Kroger. And 2.75 on Amazon.
I have that same pack of KO 'dines in my cupboard right now, had the Mackerel in Olive oil last night and loved it. Going to re-experience the Kipper snacks next for the first time in years before braving my way up to the Sardines since I've never had fish with edible bones before lol. I figure it can't be as jarring an experience as when I first had sashimi.
Speaking of anyone tried Sardines on top of a lil rice ball with a bit of nori and fake wasabi? Sounds tasty to me... lol
can you give me your opinion... herring / sardines / mackerel / herring-- can you rank them from least fishy to most fishy tasting? I want to start out with least fishy first!
@@XYLEAN594 Most fishy to least fishy for me was = Mackerel, Sardines, Kipper snacks. I personally enjoyed the Kipper Snacks the most due to the clear Smokey flavor that came through. But the Mackerel in olive oil had an amazing texture and was great with bread and cheese. The Sardines were the most middle of the road for me, wasn't really all that fishy, but I wasn't getting much other flavors from them either so they kind of disappeared when eaten with a good cheese and mustard.
@@NachozMan thank you! finally a complete reply! I just picked up some KO 'dines today, so itll be my first ever lol. I definitely want to try mackerel now that I know! ill have to try kipper after if I like the first two!
Shooting 'em like a prairie oyster 😎😎
what is the art piece of the biblical lookin guy with the grid background? I love it sm
I actually like the Tiny tots more then the regular one.
Another great sip of oil, my fellow grease enjoyer.
Well now we know 🔎😊
6:33 😆
My first can was the original king Oscar's 😇 great video
Got some King Oscar dines today.Got some skinless an boneless in olive oil, and some with skin an spine inextra virgin olive oil, red bell peppers, garlic, rosemary, an hot chili. There the ones with the clear peel off top. Haven’t tried them yet, but they look delicious! Nice episode as always man!
RUclips went tits up and didn't show me you'd posted, this ep was definitely one of the more dramatic ones. The music was on point.
Is anyone else super curious as to how this guy spends his free time? Watching independent films, drinking craft beers, or sacrificing babies....I know I am.
I wanted to look up what, if anything, a Chinese soup soon is called, and, in doing so, found that the utensil set of spoon and chopsticks that he uses for his espinaler sauce is called sujeo in Korean. So that's cool.
Eat a can of Tiny Tots or the general King Arthur everyday. Feel fantastic!
its like you revived the x files
Here is the real scoop! Tiny Tots used to be the smallest of the small, 22-38 in can, fish were shorter so packed in the tin rotated 90 degrees to how they lay in the can now. Not sure when, but they changed Tiny Tots to be the second smallest fish and like everyone is saying, must just be different wrapper than K.O 12-22 pack. I have to find out now, where those tiny delicious brislings go, if not in tiny tots then maybe obscure K.O tins somewhere or sell via some other brand.
Ok here we go. Current K.O has a 22-38 Cross-Pack. So what happened is the old "switcharoo". They put a 12-22 can in the Tiny Tots tin and then created a new King Oscar option and put the 22-38 cross pack in there. @canned fish, you already reviewed the KO 22-38 cross pack, those used to be the Tiny Tots. I prefer smallest, as bones are smaller but to each his own.
Yeah, I love the smallest fish. I guess it's just the thrill of laying waste to a whole school in a can.
Hi! I tried to watch- but work issues happened! Enjoying this morning!🐟
Of course missing your last 5 or 6 shows also has its unforeseen perks . I haven’t binged on this stuff since I first was turned onto your channel going on a year now . So that’s always nice
"They're not going to make it to school". Very fun
My favorite is Elijah Craig single barrel, barrel proof.
thanks Matt, now you got me wanting sardines.. thank God mom provided me with like a zillion cans! 😂
It’s a well-known fact that the Tiny Tots are purchased by happy people and the regular sardines are purchased by the rest… I’m glad I could clarify this for you
I told my grandchildren that liverwurst was bad little German kids ... they're the yummiest!
@@LynnMTHA - And, Braunschweiger are the good kids…
Part of me thinks this entire channel is just the brilliant idea of king Oscars social media team lmfao
I think today , the sardines are crushed in the net and again in the processing. Thats what makes them mushy. They just dont have that delicate firm of what they were in days gone by.
I'm eating a package of tiny tots while I watch your video
With Music, and with King Oscars, and with Tiny Tots, the first thing Matthew does is "throw out the [w]rappers."
I have got to watch your videos over again. Every time I watch them, it encourages me to eat some. I have got a nice supply of sardines now and I have both of these. I usually remove the tail fin but believe I am going to give them a try after watching you.
That is a great idea on the spoon and hot sauce. Gonna try that too.
They are the same, just different wrapping. I want to say I read that deen-tail somewhere. Tiny tot packaging > KO plain ‘ol red packaging. As always, great video. 🐟
Deen-tail, I love it.
PURE FAN HERE!
I think tiny tots used to come with the heads on….where can we get whole deenz now?
Lemme know if you find head-on ones in a can somewhere.
Thanks for the excellent explanation! And if you like hot sauce, El Yucateco Black Label FTW! There's nothing better.
In my experience with 'tiny tots' they used too be a smaller variety of dines,so they used too be my favorite but the last couple cans I bought were the same product with different wrappers! False advertising with the wrapper! Although they both taste great. Cool video Matthew Carlson 😎
Dude, you really need to get some merch flowing. I'd shell out $30 bucks or so for a brisling sardine print "What are we even doing here" t-shirt, maybe with a pair of chopsticks crossed on the back?
The sardines could be sporting a mustache and glasses!
And when you going to bust out that bass? (Guitar, that is.)
I picture you in a shark costume in the ocean, with somebody throwing dines and espinaler sauce in chum in the water and you swimming to it and eating it mouth open sea water and chum and all. That would be an epic intro idea. Totally free, use it at will.
just found your channel today. Seldomly subbed so quickly, I can't believe the quality of your videos! thanks for some great content man
