A beautiful weather made it possible to bike around downtown Rome, from *Circus Maximus*, through *Capitol Hill*, *Piazza Venezia*, *Trevi Fountain*, *Spanish Steps* and ending at *Piazza del Popolo*.

We are considering a place in Salento since it is mostly flat for riding. Do drivers tolerate riders at least on roads in Italy? Most are narrow with no shoulders. Are motorbikes the biggest concern? Very few riders wear helmets or gloves. Why is that? Should I just get a beater bike like I see in most countries in the EU? Thanks for doing this.
Hi Ken, good question actually... It truly depends from area to area or city to city to be correct. There are some cities in north of italy (or center too) like in Emilia Romagna region where biking is truly easy and there are lots of riders and bike-lanes as well. South is less developed in this regards and I must say, the attitude is different too (or could be different) Much care must be taken for sure; better to have double rear-mirrors, and full helmet for sure. I can't speak myself about Salento as I've never rode there, but I guess it's like Rome; you should be very careful, also from road conditions which could be also not perfect. Drivers could act sometimes against normal rules too, so better to stop at Stop signs even if they are not for you! I try to use the all Komoot to study the bike lanes before going and it's quite handy in that. I found some I never even knew existed

Great point, the "san pietrini" stones are tough quite beautiful and walking in them (when there are no cars during some days) is another thing altogether. But yes, some road conditions aren't the best for cars and tires for sure (and bikes as well)
