I put a Manila mango in a half wine barrel 4 years ago and wanted to make sure it’d survive our brutal Summers in Bakersfield. I got flowers last year and this year got my first mangoes! They were smaller, but delicious! Next year, it’s going in ground to add to the backyard orchard. Good to know they’ll survive that long!
I was just out there at Wong's Farms and toured around and I didn't hear anything about cover cropping, they had several piles of Compost that they were spreading around the Grove
Enjoyed your mango tour Where and what month can these mangos be purchased? Besides Santa Monica…..farmers market…..and Are usps orders still available…?
Yes. Wong Farms sells mangoes via orders on their website. You can get more information on the dates here (www.theproducenerd.com/2021/08/mango-farming-california/), as well as by reaching out to Wong Farms directly (www.wongfood.com/).
@@Theproducenerd thank you I did order several years back…but the usps truck must have had a flat tire …..the fruit was….cooked! But a couple actually tasted like mango purée
Nice video and thanks. Receive greetings from South Africa. What's the reason behind for covering mangoes with brown paper bag? You don't spray insecticides or you don't have insect pests in your area? Paper bags does not affect fruit quality negatively?
Unless they moved….I think they are very close to the salton sea….not sure if they expanded….as part of a rare fruit qrower tour we saw mango and a tomato operation…..about 20 yrs ago.
I wonder if they grew a cover cop and mulch those trees if that could help them some. We have a habit as growers to stay in loops of growing. Those dusty floors are a timebomb in cali these days.
The best mangoes in the US are in south Florida where conditions are more ideal than California. Coconuts also grow in south Florida unlike California.
That's debatable. Sure, the climate in so flo is much more ideal for mango because of the humid heat. I tried a lot of mangoes in the Soflo this year and there were some incredible quality fruits. but, the best mangoes i have ever had were grown here in the San Gabriel Valley in California. Since we have dry, hot weather, mangoes have higher sugar content and richer flavors. I'm not saying florida mangoes arent good(theyre excellent) but california mangoes are out of this world

The bags are used to prevent the mangoes from sun damage to the exterior.

When is mango season?
Right now in CA!
The paper bags are to protect the fruit from insect damage though they may also help to keep the fruit cool.
Please tell me mam - From flower to ripening of mangoes, what are these months in your USA-I am from India
I grow a manila mango in my front yard and I have flowers now at the beginning of April and fruit is usually pickable around October~November.
