For years the fandom has asked: “who became Cyclonus?” But now the true scholar Gavin brings us the real question: “who did Cyclonus become?” The cosmic mystery remains unsolved.
But Gaaaaaavin, niche Japanese only characters make my collection look sophisticated and I can pull out my Chris McFeely impression to act smart about something I have no knowledge of! 😮
Its a nice toy, just doesn't feel as premium as Cyclonus. I do wish they'd used some translucent plastic on the canopy...and made him a bit less gappy...and given him landing gear...and made him purple and given him horns...yeah, I still prefer Cyclonus!
I wasn't too sure how I'd feel about Metalhawk, especially as a Cyclonus retool, but in my hands it's pretty nice. Good shapes with good superhero friendly colours kind of does it for me. While I haven't watched Masterforce yet, I suppose if I were to pick a character from there that wasn't Ginrai or Overload, Metalhawk would be it, 'cos why not?
I could understand the Decepticon "Pretenders " being a combination of the monster and robot, but the Autobot "Pretenders" are just...well...a Transformer. I thought of a way to make new Autobot Pretenders for Legacy that would switch things up: Make the robot be piloted by a human. The idea would be that some humans wanted to join the fight against the Deceptions so they built transforming robot and hide inside them PRETENDING to be Transformers. Even in vehicle mode, you don't see the human pilots because they want to hide the fact that they are humans piloting the Transformer. Oh well, anyway, once again great review. I have thought about getting this one too.
I've quite liked him. Got a good stoic look. Does them quiet yet heroic hero poses well. Does feel an awful lot like they were cutting back a bit on the budget though. Just a few little things were he's more simple than Cyclonus and lacking a few finishing touches.
Now I often wonder if this is also a subtle nod to a BotCon concept where they wanted to use the Universe (2008) Cyclonus in Black Shadow colors (representing him from Shattered Glass)? Jesse Wittenrich can tell you more about it.
0:43, but srsly...isn't it?!! (zoom into Cyclonus' face) 0:59, but..isn't it?!! (zooms in on Metalhawk's face) 1:28, but....isn't he?!! God, I love that joke of yours. XD
I think what I like the most about cyclonus was his nosecone and arm transformation. to see that they were simplified is a shame since being a retool of cyclonus doesn’t automatically make it good unless it took the better aspects of it yknow. Idk
i just got an idea, with the lack of paint aps and details on the figures (and as a part time transformers collector on top of being a gunpla collector) i think it would be a genius idea to panel line certain transformers figures
He's just so shiny. In a cheap-plastic kind-of way, rather than a fancy-metal kind-of way. After disliking Jhiaxus solely because of the plastic used, I know I can't get this. I'd hate it.
Unfortunately I ended up with the QC nightmare that was the Generation selects Cyclonus and don't feel like sourcing the normal one so even if this ones lesser I'll probably end up feeling better about it. I happen to like custard yellow so that's a plus at least lol.
I definitely share your every opinion about this retool of a figure that was awesome. The paint is boring and makes this long awaited release not much fun. It feels very unfinished. I want to return it. I passed on tarn in the wild a couple of days before I found metal hawk in the wild and I kinda regret it. 🤦♂️
Titans Return Metalhawk is surprisingly easy to get in Mexico, but every time I see it I ask myself... Do I really want it? Sadly, every time the coin lands ln "yes" I can't afford it. Oh well, I may get this to properly paint the jet blue.
Tbh I'm surprised you don't love his sword, I know its a bland grey colour but the shape of it reminds me of those Masters of the Universe weapons, especially since it has the random tube

AND I didn't even know Optimus Prime came back to life (like Jesus did) until I was twenty-seven, [REDACTED] years ago. But I still pre-ordered this figure that I will no doubt see going for seven and a half pence the next time I click onto Kapow. Chris sure knows his stuff! And yeah, this figure isn't really doing anything for me. That not really gold and all that ugly grey... I'll stick with the fantastic Cyclonus, thanks
I think this figure is kind of hurt by being a Cyclonus remold, because it does none of the cool shit that Cyclonus does. Cyclonus's arms become _so_ seamless when in jet mode, I mean obviously if you know they're the arms you know they're the arms but the whole thing barely looks like it even transforms. The nosecone fuckery is amazing as well. Meanwhile from what I can gather looking at this thing in jet mode the arms are just raised up and sit there hanging out for all to see without even trying to blend in with the rest of the jet mode, the nosecone thing is severely reduced from the change of the mold, and overall the jet mode just kind of looks like a chunky mess in comparison. The colours, while I assume accurate to the character (minus yellow instead of gold) don't help either.
To be honest, I'm not sure what to think of it. On one hand I REALLY like the robot mode (even if the yellow isn't as good looking as the original gold). And them you get to the jet mode..... And, well, the look alone isn't that bad, but the Blue and Grey of the figure just doesn't work for me that much. Also, the accesories could REALLY use some work. Like, why is this Grey plastic that "meh" ?
I think you forgot to mention that this is the first time Hasbro have released a Japanese Transformers character in the West. Also, I was expecting the special guest star to be Artfire. 🙁
I gotta be honest I actually thought he was a knockoff. That yellow body just isn't cutting it for me. Shoudn't it be the other way around with red with yellow accents? Well anyway it's a good retool I guess.

Metalhawk is cool but I doubt I’ll be able to get him, along with any other figures, for a while considering how I overplayed for ss86 slug, only to almost immediately break the knee ratchets and have to buy another, even more overpriced replacement figure
40 years ago I would have loved this toy. Now it’s just a bit too bright and, I don’t know, a little much? It looks cool and like a knock off at the same time. I’m not exactly sure what’s wrong with it but something is off.
Great video! Thank you! This looks very cool, but not AMAZINGLY cool. I've come to expect Boring Grey Plastic on Transformers, but that "gold" is just disappointing. It's just . . . earwax. opefully, a lick of paint or some stickers will solve that.

Nice to see a zoom call between a loving father and son.
They’re related?!
He's my dad
@@TRDQ what!!? You look like the dad in this conversation
@@Toxic3610 I didn't really meet him until I was like 15 or so, I had to grow up fast.

But Gaaaaaavin, niche Japanese only characters make my collection look sophisticated and I can pull out my Chris McFeely impression to act smart about something I have no knowledge of! 😮
Gavin is such a magnanimous toy mogul. He gave Chris McFeely an entire TWO letters to enunciate on screen.
Such a lad.
That slow pan out of the sword on Metalhawk's back to reveal his head facing backwards had me dying. I love the quick subtle humor in these reviews.
Chris McFeely is such a professional, but I cannot believe that he didn’t know that Cyclonus and Metalhawk were the same guy in Kiss Players!
Patchy is probably the best word I've heard to sum up that jet mode
Good shit tho, I'm subbing
I’m basically John Masterforce and the fact I can go to Walmart and buy Metalhawk makes me happy beyond belief
Thank you Gavin! I now know for sure that Metalhawk is Metalhawk, and not Cyclonus. Please never stop doing the work that needs to be done! 🙏

Gavin: That’s the last time I’ll do it….
Is it?
Metalhawk is the Arnold Rimmer of Transformers
This might be one where the Toyhax set makes you more inclined to pick up the figure itself. Always slightly worrying when that happens.

I feel like he pairs well with Jhiaxus as his early 90s counterpart to Metalhawks late 80s vibe.
Honestly one thing Metalhawk does better than Cyclonus is the wrists; you can bend them inwards and then down for much more dynamic sword poses
I wouldn't mind the hollow forearms if he wasn't based on a mold with perfect non hollow forearms. Feels like a step backward
I think I’ll pick up this lad, I enjoyed the Cyclonus mold to bits, I just like how that mold feels. Sorry Gav :(
