@@ghostlee6434 I don't understand why you're here on a Friends video if you don't enjoy the show. Cheers/Frasier is great but I've never liked Seinfeld. George and Elaine are fine but Jerry and Kramer are incredibly unfunny and the actors are tiresome. Richards derailed his whole career with his racist outburst towards a black guy heckling him I think black sitcoms are pretty funny. Fresh Prince, Sanford & Son, Jeffersons. Cosby Show was before, well, yeah...
This first episode with Ursula as Phoebes sister is a callback to the show Mad About You (Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt) where Lisa originally played Ursula the waitress. She was seen in that part as someone who could play Phoebe, and since both shows are set in New York and on the same network (some seasons aired on the same night) they decided to write new character for the new show as Ursula’s sister. Lisa kept up appearances on Mad About You even while Friends became the bigger hit. That’s the reason for the Helen Hunt cameo. She’s playing her Mad About You character, Jamie Buchman, thinking she’s seeing Ursula instead of Phoebe. This is the first of several times Lisa played both characters on the same show.
@@stonebaxter there was also a crossover involving a televised car chase spoofing the real life slow motion car chase involving OJ Simpson... I think Kramer was involved with that one too
This is one of those series you keep watching again and again, sometimes you just play it in the background. Its like those books that whenever you read them again you get something different, as you are a different person reading that book. Seeing it along you is a blast, I feel you relate much more, I remember a lot of the series made more sense to me as I grew up and as I knew more american friends (so it was easier to split what's "TV", what's "American", what's universal, etc.)
@@jkhoover It was all part of NBC's Thursday night must-see tv sitcom block they were pushing at the time. Mad About You originally aired Thursdays in the 8p lead-in slot where Lisa Kudrow's Ursela appeared on as a recurring absent-minded, slightly evil waitress. When Friends debuted in1994, it took Mad's 8p time slot and Mad moved to Sunday night. Friends was an immediate breakout hit from episode one. And although the 8:30p through 10p time slots would see a rotation of shows, Friends never moved from its 8p lead-in on thursdays for the entire ten year run of the show.
4:51 The joke about Ursula bringing more food than what Joey ordered is from Mad About You, a sitcom where Lisa Kudrow played Ursula, an absent-minded waitress who always got the orders wrong.
That's also why Helen Hunt and the other lady show up and mistake Phoebe for Ursula and when she blows them off because she doesn't even know them they take it as confirmation that she is in fact the terrible waitress they know at their usual place.
Fun facts: The character of Ursula was created to explain Lisa Kudrow's ongoing role on the sitcom Mad About You. The two shows aired back-to-back on Thursday nights. Helen Hunt and Leila Kenzle (the brunette) also appear in this episode as their Mad About You characters and mistake Phoebe for Ursula. Phoebe mentioned she had a twin sister in E2, but it's understandable someone watching it for the first time would forget. George Clooney and Noah Wyle (the other doctor) played doctors on the show ER at the time this aired. It was George's breakout role. Nina is played by Jennifer Grant, daughter of legendary actor Cary Grant. Initially, Courteney Cox auditioned for Rachel and Jennifer Aniston auditioned for Monica, which makes the insurance storyline even funnier. The plot about the gang playing poker was inspired by the cast playing together on set. Btw no kidding, I've left the Christmas lights up until March/April a few times lol
Why would a character be created for one sitcom to explain an actor's ongoing role on another sitcom? 😂 Ursula already existed on Mad About You before Friends began, she was added to Friends but not to explain Lisa's ongoing role on Mad About You, which btw required no explanation, she's an actress portraying a character, believe it or not people were familiar with the concept back then. Courteney Cox did audition for the role of Rachel but *Jennifer Aniston DID NOT audition for the role of Monica.* Cox was the one who saw herself as Monica and told the producers who ended up agreeing with her, the role was cast before Aniston was even part of the audition process. What surprises me is that Cary Grant had kids since he was famously gay, kind of like when Michael (of Cine Pals) talks about his wife. Mind-boggling 🤯
You must be related to my mother lol. I think if it wasn't for me and other family members she seriously would have them up (and a [dead] real tree by the way) all year around! It was so embarrassing to me as a teenager lol.
To catch you up with the background. Lisa kudrow was playing Ursula when she got cast in friends. The producers of Mad About You didn't want to lose her, and since they were on the same network and that was just a reoccurring character, it was arranged for her to play both. Since both shows take place in New York, they made them twins and arranged crossover opportunities like this.
Kristen, you said you wanted our stories, so here goes. This show came out my sophomore year of high school, but I didn't watch it until season 4, my freshman year of college. I only saw bits and pieces of seasons 1-3 until I finished college and got married (which was the beginning of season 8). This show was OUR show for me and my wife, and for Christmas that year 2001, she bought me seasons 1-4 on DVD. I still had never seen most of the episodes from 1-3. I knew the big plot points but the little things that you fall in love with, I didn't experience until much later. When the show completed in May 2004, my wife and I finished our DVD set of the show, and we essentially watched a disc (6 episodes) most nights at home while we ate dinner. We found out she was pregnant in late 2004 and our son was born May 2005, and we still watched these discs....so much so that when he was a baby and was fussy, once the theme song came on, he would immediately stop crying and smile. He also smiled at Phoebe when she was on the screen. 😊 So there's our little Friends story. 😊
When I had my son, I didn’t have cable or a tv hookup for basic tv. All I could watch were DVDs. I began collecting the box set a season at a time and I’d watch them over & over. My son would play and I’d have this on at least in the background. When he’d hear the theme song, no matter what he was doing, he’d stop to listen. He’d crawl around on the floor playing but stop to hear the song and he’d bounce back and forth on his hands & knees until the song was over. Then, he’d get back to playing. I’ll always remember that time of my life and how cute he was “watching” Friends along with me.

So, for some context: NBC's Thursday night comedy lineup started with Mad About You (Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt as Paul and Jamie Buchman) in the 8PM slot. Because it was a an established hit show already, it was the anchor for the whole Thursday lineup, and when Friends came along, it was put into the 8:30 slot in the hopes that that massive audiences who tuned in at 8 would stay through 8:30 because Seinfeld (the other monster hit) came on at 9. That's how you got ratings: you exposed the people who tuned in for one show to show preceding or following the one you wanted to watch. In fact, The One With the Blackout was part of a night-long stunt where the New York based Thursday shows (except Seinfeld, which refused to take part in it) were all set in a blackout that was caused by Paul and Jamie in their episode. Anyway, Lisa Kudrow already had been doing a recurring role for 2 years part on Mad About You as Ursula, this waitress at the diner Paul and Jamie always went to. When she got the part on Friends and it was slotted next to Mad About You, people started to realize Lisa was on 2 shows at once playing similar characters, and ofc she has a recognizable voice. So the writers decided to play with it and make Ursula and Phoebe twin sisters. The two women who come into Central Perk and the audience cheers so loud for are Helen Hunt (as Jamie Buchman) and Leila Kenzle (Jamie's bestie, Fran), and the audience is going crazy like that because, like I said, Mad About You was a MONSTER hit for NBC. The reason you don't know about now is because once Friends became a big hit too, NBC moved Mad About You and some other established Thursday night shows (like “Caroline and the City” maybe?) to other nights so it could use their Thursday night slots to jump-start newer shows...most of which failed. Back then, schedule-hopping was a new practice for networks, and people were not used to it. We were used to memorizing our favorite show’s schedules one time only because they never changed. There was no streaming, no internet, no DVR where you could tell the box to record a show based on its name instead the day and time slot. People had VCRs but it took some effort to track down constantly moving shows in TV Guide & to manually program analog VCRs - more effort than career folk with active social lives could muster. So, Mad About You suffered in its later seasons, ratings dropped, and this made it less valuable as a syndication property, which means it faded from the public consciousness.

Phoebe's "Yeah? Oh!" response to Joey has stayed with me all these years. It just jelled so much about that show all in a little bit; tender, heartfelt, and still comedic and then back to endearing all at once. And I'm not even a fan, but I could/can see by this 17th episode this little show that could was so in stride and a well oiled machine charging on... er, something like that, lol, so many ensemble shows aren't this tight until maybe their 4th or 5th year, if they're lucky to get there. And then NBC's 'corporate-synergy' of intertwining their thursday night line-up (9pm Friends 9:30 Mad About You 10pm ER) of stars was just brilliant for sweeps-week.
First of all, never apologize for laughing or crackling. All of us here have joined you on this journey and we understand. I was flying and was watching Friends on the airplane and one scene had me laughing so hard that everyone was looking at me. (For those of you who are curious about the scene, it’s when two characters are playing rock paper scissors and some options were made up). Second, I’m sure it’s been mentioned, (not going to read all the comments) but Lisa Kudrow was playing Ursula on Mad About You and it was airing right before Friends and viewers were confused why they were seeing Ursula on Friends. The network eventually decided that they would explain that Phoebe and Ursula are twins.
Friends was really good and funny for its time, honestly. SOme of the stuff has not aged well but overall its still pretty funny and heartwarming. Super fun watching along with you!
We're getting close now to peak-level Friends red zone territory where it will remain and never jumps the shark the rest of its entire ten year run. Friends becomes FRIENDS at the very end of season one; on the season ending cliffhanger episode. Major league emotionally gripping yet non-stop hilarious story arcs and cliffhangers where Friends were trailblazers in sitcom history in that traditionally, long running plot points were exclusively only done by serialized dramas and daytime soap operas. By this season's cliffhanger's end, Friends the show and the entire Friends cast become overnight household names and broadcast tv rock stars, going to another level and exploded in insane heights of popularity going from breakout new hit show to global phenomenon. Plus, come on : Ross and Rachel. Will they, won't they? Instantly iconic and the rewatchability of these shows is unparalleled. You are a good time watching these with, reliving it all over again through your eyes. So, don't be shy, Kristen. Come on, you can tell us anything ... ;D

Ross' and Monica's dad is a very very good man, just from another time.
This series will addict you over and over again.
Yes. Merry Friendsmas Kristen
😁👍👍
The poker episode is classic, one of the most popular ones for Friends❕It's hilarious❕😂
Worst.
I don’t like it.
The amount of crossovers in the series is insane I grew up watching these shows and it's hilarious
Loving these reactions bring back 90s memories
First of all, never apologize for laughing or crackling. All of us here have joined you on this journey and we understand. I was flying and was watching Friends on the airplane and one scene had me laughing so hard that everyone was looking at me.
(For those of you who are curious about the scene, it’s when two characters are playing rock paper scissors and some options were made up).
Second, I’m sure it’s been mentioned, (not going to read all the comments) but Lisa Kudrow was playing Ursula on Mad About You and it was airing right before Friends and viewers were confused why they were seeing Ursula on Friends. The network eventually decided that they would explain that Phoebe and Ursula are twins.
this is why FRIENDS was and will be the greatest "friend group" show.
Friends was really good and funny for its time, honestly. SOme of the stuff has not aged well but overall its still pretty funny and heartwarming. Super fun watching along with you!
YES It's Clarice from It Takes two! :)
These friends videos always come right on time ❤😊
29:16 this is why we love watching Kristen's episodes lol
Her reactions are so funny and cute
Awesome Kristen, never stop laughing! They don’t make em like Friends anymore!
Cheers mare me laugh again too! Great show
Great reaction! 🤘
My mom showed me The Miracle of Life when I was like 10. I was disturbed but also fascinated.
I watch just to seem Kristen laugh it’s so contagious and cute and love to see people smile 😊 these are great
Hello Kristen and the ladies ❤❤❤❤
Come on, you can tell us anything ... ;D
I have watched all the seasons many times. I can tell you that Chandler is the character which will developed the most.
spoiler, sush. And ffs yes, everything alluding to future things in the show is a spoiler.
MARCELLOUS IS SO ADORABLE. I'VE WANTED A MONKEY SINCE I WAS A KID. THEY ARE SO ADORABLE AND SMART. WHEN HE SQUEEZED ROSSES FINGER, THAT WAS SO HEARTWARMING.
- in case of a emergence call?
- you. 16:18
great reaction - i watched this show thousands of times but you make it feel like i am watching it for the first time
I used to quote "The fifth doctor caved and now they're all recommending Trident?" allll the time when people would ask me "Guess what?"
I loved all of the guest stars. And I just loved the episodes in general
Kristen your laugh is amazing especially when you lose control of it also merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Love this show, love these reactions, but the Trolls in these comments make me want to go on something the news would later refer to as a "Frenzy". 🤨
6:58 "Too close to that WENUS." 🤣 Well played, M'Lady. 🥃
11:35 This little rant contains one of the best line deliveries in the entire series by Jane Sibbett: "Is that your nostril? Mind if We Push This POT ROAST THROUGH IT ?!?!" 🤣🤣🤣
Happy Christmas Eve Kristen! 🎅🏻🎄🎉
Just a french regular guy here.
That s great that you are so hooked by Frends ^^ I used to take asleep listening this show back in the days. Now its not even on Netflix so i had to find someone else.
With Harry Potter you are binging it s makes me having good time ^^
ANd i really don't get people saying 'its patriarca n sexist'
Continue those videos its great to see ya laugh
Merry Christmas Kristen 🎄 🎄🎄🎄. Best Christmas Present Ever.
Even though the show was many years ago, I probably watched it a billion times. But I still enjoy watching it again and laugh like the first time I watched it.😂❤ thnx for the react so much fun 😅
You're becoming more and more hooked and I'm loving it. Also, the crush on Chandler is so real lmao
That was a cameo. They where from a show called "Mad about you" where the actress of phobe had a small role as the waytress. Then they had the idea to make both characters being sisters
Love her shirt.
Please start doing at least 4 at a time. I always want more episodes. 😂
It's 24 episodes in season 1, so it only makes sense for her to continue to do 3 at a time for season 1.
This is such a great Television Show. I really really really like this show Friends a lot. And the very first time that I have ever watched this TV show Friends was when I was 17 years old in High School, And it has been 30 years ago since I have been watching this TV show Friends.
Friends had the juice back in the day with two of the biggest names in t.v. at the time George Clooney and I forgot the other name. But ER was a big back then lol then Helen hunt in the last ep crazy.
George Looney before he became a puppet for the demonrat party, this year was particularly embarassing for him 😂
The other guy is Noah Wyle
@andreshernandez1180 lol shame and thank you I saw him not long ago still doing a doctor shows.
"Are you ready for our date night? Cause I am!" - yes ma'am, I noticed!
And you guys even strategically positioned the show segments...
*sigh*
I can't blame you for it.
That said, I primarily come here for Kristen's personality.
There is no benefit for me if you show me cake that I can't eat.
Me 2. She is hot 🥵
Jesus, I have such a crush on this woman.... It's not fair.
🤔 So you identify as a lesbian?
😂
@andreshernandez1180 What?
@@PopsiCOLE 😂 😂
@@andreshernandez1180 Uuuh. Ok
😂👍👍
Ursula is a character in another sitcom at the time ... hilarious writing, quite creative, they live in the same sitcom universe; great for cameos‼ 😁
Hey! It's been like 2 weeks! I need my Kristen FRIENDS fix!
It was a not-so-veiled reference, Monica and Rachel's dr. Dates are played by (a very young!) George Clooney and Noah Wylie, who played - what else - Doctors on the long-running and consistently excellent NBC drama, ER - which also aired on NBC Thursday nights. Good times!
The first season is like a teaser where u just learn to know the characters, it gets even better ❤
I don't know if u knew, but Lisa Kudrow plays both Phoebe and Ursula 🙂
😶......
🤦🏻♂️
I am getting addicted to these watchthroughs
I've always had a problem with the saying about The pen in the company ink: while at work why wouldn't you use company ink?! that's what it's there for!
It is fun to watch the directions this show will go. Gonna be a great ride! I haven't seen the show in ages so it is nice to laugh with the _Friends_ again.
"I LOVE ROSS!"
Ohhhhh, you just wait..)
43:15 I have been waiting for this episode since day 1. finally. Its my favorite in S1
You are starting to fall in love with the show…it’s normal the show is so wholesome
I love that you get “it” now and all the hype was real ❤
So ready for our Friends date night! 😂
Best Xmas and birthday ever with other Friends reaction ❤🎄♥️🎁❤
Thank you. I am enjoying this, much. There are so many laughs ahead, I hope you do the entire series, please.
It’s nice that you think season one is so good, because you’ve barely scratched the surface. You’ve got nine more seasons to go and each one is better and better.
The writers took shallowness to a new, higher level
Good work
I love how much you love this show and the characters. Thank you for doing these reactions.
- Like other people mentioned, Lisa Kudrow played the really, really terrible waitress Ursula on Mad About You before joining Friends, and she was such a fun character they included her in the Friends setting.
- I won’t spoil anything coming up but I’ll just say you’re not alone shipping Joey and Phoebe, there are a ton of Friends fans who agree with you. 😄
You should look for the outtakes of season 1 when you finish it. Great watch and funny 😄
*But you can teach us" 😂😂😂
Nina is played by Jennifer Grant, actor Cary Grant’s daughter.
Love our date nights.
Merry Christmas
The poker episode makes me itch. Lol. I play a game called Spades, no money, just bragging rights and there is no "it's just a game". My mom is not allowed to be my partner because she doesn't play close enough attention to the game. Lol. I've taught ppl, but what they were doing would honestly piss me off. Lol. The aunt is the GOAT!!!!
Merry christmas for my wife reactor!!!!
Carrying this channel with this amazing reactions
26:46 Kristen's face 😂
friends is a good show but some scenes and episodes are so hard to get through because of plot induced stupidity
Awesome coolest funniest amazing reaction every time 😇 🎉❤and merry Christmas to you and your family 💝 🎄🎊✨️
I can’t wait to see what her reaction would be on the whole we were on a break 😅
Love how much you're loving the show. I'm a little annoyed because my nightly ritual of watching Friends on Nick at Nite is interrupted. They put on Big Bang Theory instead. Without consulting me first? RUDE! I rely on this show as a feel good distraction from everything in my life that makes me anxious. I like to fall asleep to it because then I have happy thoughts and dreams.
Oh man. Brought me back to when we found out I was having twins. I couldn't imagine trying to care for two infants but once they're here, instinct kicks in and you just do whatever you have to do.
