- In this driving lesson video I will show you how to operate an electronic parking brake in order to move off and stop, a lot of people actually let down the parking brake manually but that is not necessary as I will explain in this short video.

Can you do an electronic brake hill start?
Yes you can.
Never had an electronic handbrake on a car and was a bit nervous about it, but your video has reassured me. Thanks Dane.
Glad to hear that you found it useful, best wishes
They are very convenient, best wishes.
Same 😂
I’ve never seen a electric handbrake in action before. Nice short video and well explained ! Thanks.
Thank you! I'm trying to make more shorter videos but the majority of time I can't help adding more and more 😣
I’m so used to my electronic parking brake now that I’d find it difficult to go back to the manual type now. It’s really convenient, especially with hill starts.
I know what you mean, some of my learner drivers have the same challenges
@@DaneTygheletsdrive will I be marked down if I don't physically touch the electric Handbrake to release it on a hill start? It's convenient but I feel the driving instructor will say I am not showing the skill of releasing the Handbrake. At the same time if I want to release the Handbrake physically, my vehicle tells me to press on the brake pedal which can not happen on a hill start because 1 leg will be on the clutch and the other one on the accelerator.
Please advise on what to do on the test day
So how do you start car on hill?
On my test I was allowed just use the auto hold didn’t have to go near it at all
Excellent - clear - introduction to the use of electronic braking system.
Tough at the top though
Never had a vehicle with an electric handbrake before. Just bought a , vauxhall meriva with an electric handbrake, had to watch your video on how to operate it. Really hadn't got a clue. Thanks! I know now.
Glad to help, best wishes.
Thank-you mate, great explanation,I am getting a new car next week with this feature, taught me well,Kev.
Good luck with your new set of wheels son.
Dane Tyghe Son lol I’m an old man lololol
@@kevanwitt55 Just a figure of speech in Wexford 😁
Dane Tyghe yes I know Dane ,you helped me a lot thank-you ;now I have to learn,start-stop and auto hold features lol
The learning never ends, best wishes
Hello.
Thank you for the great video - advice. It works perfectly. There are a lot of such instructions on the web, but all of them I saw contain one significant error - your instruction is OK.
Regards
Janusz
Thank you
I like the reassuring pull on a lever and the physical sight of a good old handbrake that is up for on down for off. But then again Im a man who stands around for five minutes checking his car is safely parked up and locked before walking away. I love my car soooo much lol
I know what you mean 😂 fair play to you!
Thank you so much… I don’t know how long I’ve been press the brake myself 👍🏼🇬🇧
Well explained.. only importnt things to discuss and easy to understand. Thank u sir❤️
My pleasure, best wishes.
The jaguar lifestyle suits you Dane 😉
Thank you 🙂 bit of a change from the aul Opel Corsa, I could certainly get used to an automatic car!
@@DaneTygheletsdrive haha I have an insignia, I'd love one of these jags though, my next car will be automatic. I have a question for you, do you know when you stopped at the junction and put on the parking break, you left the car in drive so it's ready to go, would that not be putting strain on the transmission as it's trying to creep forward against the parking brake? Thanks pal, great video as always.
@@erindahl6463 It's an English car it wouldn't be coming from Germany
I am happy I drive car without knowing this for last 6 months. I used to do manually for release handbrake 😅
Thanks
Oh dear. At least you know now
Hi Dane, thanks for the video. I was just wondering if I need to use the electronic brake at junctions where I’m waiting more than 7 seconds letting traffic pass. Will I get marked down if I only use the foot brake?
Thanks for this tutorial:) Well explained! Only important information included and that's exactly what I needed to grasp it 😊
I try to get to the point without the needless waffle.
Havnt got car yet just wanted to see how nrake worked. You made it look easy
It's the technology that makes it easy, the automatic handbrakes are great.
Thank you for your excellent video. My current 04 plate Meriva has the old school handbrake and I needed to know how to use this, as I'm getting a new car👏👍
My pleasure, best wishes
Nice Thanks for the easy and clear explanation going to try this in my touareg .
Simple is best. Good luck with your driving.
Hi Dane, thanks so much for your great work! I have an electric car with the autohold button. It is brilliant car moves off more efficiently comparing to electronic P button. If I use the autohold instead of P will I be marked negative?
Not really but the tester will probably want you to demonstrate that you can use the regular handbrake and that's why some of the testers ask you to switch off the auto hold for the hill start so it's a bit more realistic. Sometimes the auto hold is a bit awkward when creeping out at a junction but it depends on the car.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thank you for your prompt reply.I will update on how it goes but as you said depends on the tester
Please do, best of luck
@@DaneTygheletsdrivehey Dane, what do I do if I can’t switch off auto hold?
Hi Dane, have my first driving test in 3 weeks was wondering if you could go through the marking scheme, how people lose marks/get marks, what happens when they call me in etc. Love your videos btw!! Such a useful channel.
The marking scheme consists of grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 marks, grade 1 is minor, 2 is medium and grade 3 is serious. If you get 9 or more grade 2 marks you fail - this is probably the most common way people fail. The result will be given at the end of the test in the driving test centre.
Hi Dane, I am going to be taking my test in an electric car (Nissan Leaf) just wanted to know if there are any special rules in terms car checks like bonnet checks with electric cars.
Just know the main parts such as the different charging ports, brake fluid, battery, coolant and water. The best thing is to ask your driving instructor or go to the place where you purchased it and ask them to go over the engine parts.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Thanks Dane! Will check with the instructor and car dealer as well.
Best of luck
Great video Dane thanks!
Best wishes
sorry to bother you but I watched this video does this still happen if you are facing down hill and want to reverse up hill do you get your biting point and the break comes off also. Thank you in advance
Hi Dane, I have an electric handbrake in my car under the right hand side of the steering wheel but it doesn’t come off automatically like the car in your video, how should I go about hill-starts etc.
I daresay it does come off automatically, have you tried extra acceleration and a higher clutch? What type of car is it?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive it’s a merc GLA 2015, yeah the car won’t move. If you take it off and use the footbrake it won’t move back it will hold on a hillstart. Is this ok in a test ?
Thanks for the reply!
Interesting, yeah that'll be fine for the test, all cars are different and have their own unique features.
What about parking on hill . Still need to apply 1st gear?
Nice video. But in a hill start situation it works tha same? Cheers
Yes but it will depend on the hill, it's different for each situation
My instructors got an electronic parking brake, and it's a manual, so on hillstarts, I keep rolling back while juggling the clutch and accelerator while trying to move off uphill.
Trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong here like but I can't wrap me heid around it at aw
I just bought a car with an electronic hand break and have never used one bdfore . My car is geared but this was useful .
Good luck with your new car
Really helpful. Thanks.
My pleasure
Hi Dave, for parking, first parking brake and then parking gear?
Sounds good
Hi doing my test soon I have an automatic handbrake whenever I stop and I put it on at lights or anything etc can I just drive off with the clutch and throttle or will that be a fail
How would that be a fail? Just accelerate first then raise the clutch to move off as I have explained in the video.
My car tells me to press on brake pedal to release electric handbrake. Why? My car is a Peugeot 208 model of 2024. I'm worried what will happen when uphill.
Where do I buy the Juice that you keep referring to?
Any good petrol station
I must be doing something wrong in my new toyota corolla as I'm finding the EHB (manual car) a nightmare. The only way I seem to be able to get it to work albeit with a few bangs and shudders is to depress the EHB as I accelerate i.e. like the old manual type of hand brake!
If you follow my instructions in this video you shouldn't have any problems
Thank you.
Best wishes
If i do my test in my own car and it has an electrical handbreak, do testers allow you to n use this?
Yeof course, just drive the car and embrace the technology that you have. This is 2021 not 1981.
Are you allowed to the driving test in car with electric handbrake
Yes you can certainly use a car with an electric handbrake for your test, quite a number of my clients have, is that the type of car you have?
Yeah I done mine in a 2014 Insignia last year and it had electric parking brake. They're the best invention since sliced bread haha
They surely are, in time the majority of cars will be automatic and have the electric handbrake 👍
@@DaneTygheletsdrive well, once they go fully electric they'll all be automatic anyway with electric everything. That said, the art of driving is dwindling away.
Hi there. How do you take the brake off when pointing downhill? (manual box). Cheers
Let go of the brake pedal, accelerate lightly and slowly bring your clutch up.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Hi Dane. So I have my Evoque (manual) When parked up hill as i lift the clutch in 1st to take off, the car rolls backwards. I basically have to hold the button up manually and treat it like a traditional handbrake. Should it roll backwards when the clutch is coming up?
You have to accelerate first and then bring up the clutch, it should not roll back.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Actually, you need to get it around 2000rpm then lift the clutch to stop it rolling backwards. So a bit more beans than a conventional handbrake. Cheers
Best wishes
Got an electric handbreak in my car and wanted to the test in my car wasn’t sure if I had to manually take my handbreak off for the examiner to see
Now you know
So do you not need to manually deactivate the electronic handbrake when you're moving off in any car, or is this only applicable to the Jaguar you were driving in the video?
What do you mean manually deactivate?
How to use the auto handbrake button during the driving test ?Is it allowed to use or should I manually press the button each time to show them am using the handbrake .
Use it the same way you would in a normal car - on the hill, at lights etc...
But you can use the auto as well yes.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thank you so much . During the road test what would you suggest as an evaluater for the use of hand brake .Should I use the switch each time or can I activate the autohandbrake mode .Is it ok to ask the examiner about the use of autohandbrake switch before starting the test ?
I would use the switch because it's just my personal preference and I prefer to be in control. You can't ask the tester for advice or help.
What does auto hold mean? I have an electric handbrake in my car but I don’t know what you mean thanks
It's an automated setting in the car that prevents roll back on the hill.
I just bought a focus st line with electronic handbrake. The first day and a half I was pulling the EPB lever up to lock it but also up to release. I thought up to release was correct. Until I discovered it was pushing lever/paddle down to release. I thought I might have damaged the car, but your saying it releases automatically whether I just pulled upor not?
I did feel that slight grab before taking off but then it went away fine.
Knowledge is power
and the answer to my Q is?????
Normally the car will automatically move forward once you accelerate and bring your clutch up. No need to physically pull the lever.
Hi Dane, do you provide pre tests? I need some on tallaght test route. If yes, how do I contact you?
I don't cover Dublin, try In Gear driving school = Paul Murphy 085 810 8526.
Hi Dane ,how to use electronic hand break in vauxhall astra manual transmission car? For eg in hill start .I can able to release handbrake with engaging break pedal.without break engagement I am not able to release hand break.
Just accelerate then lift the clutch and if it doesn't move just accelerate more. You don't need to physically release it.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thank you.it works as you said.
Life can be good. All it takes is a little faith.
2017 Honda Civic doesn’t automatically disengage the parking brake
It probably does, you're most likely doing it wrong, try more acceleration
Very helpful for technophob as myself lol
Glad to hear that
Hi Dane, can you use the auto hold function in the driving test to stop rolling back? Thanks in advance.
Yes you can
this works on a hill start?!
Yes
Give her some juice!!!! :D Nice, thanks
Great little saying
Just another bit of kit to add to the cost of the car, and more likely than a handbrake to fail at some point in its life. There really is no problem in using a handbrake.
Such as skeptic
Mine stayed red, on a hill, and it continued to go backwards!
What did you do to cause this?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive after watching some more videos I believe it's because I had my seatbelt off
Possibly so but are you talking about your handbrake?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive yep
Maybe you didn't bring up the clutch enough, another possibility is that you did not accelerate enough.
Do not hang anything on the rear view mirror - you can fail an MOT !
😲
My driving instructor has this car. I hate it because it makes hill starts harder
How?
It’s a really dangerous system
If I put the parking brake on it should stay on till it’s released that’s what it’s for
Put the parking brake on and leave it in drive now get out the car and then just touch the throttle peddle and the car just shoots off with no driver very safe.
Is it applicable to Volkswagen Golf tsi 2014 Automatic?
