  • We go back and have another look at the electronic parking brake, showing the differences between a handbrake and an electronic parking brake. Then also what the differences are between the old electronic parking brake in the Vauxhall Zafira and the new one in the Vauxhall Grandland X.

Show us how to do a hill start using the electronic brake without rolling backwards when slipping the clutch while in first gear.
That would be a lot more useful.
Personally I would much prefer a manual handbrake because, among other things, I don't have to look down at it. I imagine I would have to look down to find the little button of the electronic one and thus be distracted from looking at the road.

Find bite and accelerate, the e brake will turn off automatically.

some cars have hill start assist otherwise it's judging the biting point only without the brake hold delay

The vauxhall I'm learning to drive only activate/deactivates electronic parking brake only if I'm pressing the foot brake .
It's a feature for a problem that never existed before..
Autohold it's pretty easy I agree but the system on my instructor s vauxhall doesn't have it . I still need to press the tiny button every time I need parking brake . Makes it a lot harder on hill starts because I need to be pressing the foot brake to release parking brake .. sometimes I do need to look down to find the little button 😅😅

Grandad arrived in my home town today from his home town. He’s 88. He choose to train instead of long distance drive. He’s rented a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Automatic.
Your video instruction clip came in rather handy just now, as we both (I’m 38) momentarily forgot the engine has to be on to release the PARKING brakes.

Sorry just brought a used Seat Leon which has a EHB which I have yet to collect after test driving it and I have been wondering how you use it on a ramp. Subsequently found out how to but not before I viewed your video. So I just want to tell you it allayed my fears and the presenter did a very good job. You never know my next car maybe a Vauxhall. 😉Thanks.

Absolutely 100% agree . Just a gadget to charge a bit more and to constantly keeping getting it fixed , coz even if there s nothing wrong with the EPB , sometimes the light stays on and being electronic gotta get it checked..
Nothing like an old school hand brake .

  • @paulneri835

Bit confused. Is it the case that when the EPB is on you can "turn it off" by either depressing the brake pedal and turning the EPB button down or doing nothing other than accelerating (e.g. hillstart)? And if the latter, please confirm you don't need to turn the EPB button down when accelerating. I have just bought a Toyota Corolla that I am yet to experiment with but I must say I am rather concerned about how to do hill starts. At this stage I'm not a fan of the EPB concept. Thanks.

Do you know will the grandland x automatically apply the handbrake when stopped in traffic for example? Or do you manually have to put the car into neautral and apply it?

There maybe a time when it needs to be push or rocked and even towed, so bad idea auto locking when the engine is switched off - unless it can be also deactivated to remove it.

if you turn the ignition on, put your foot on the brake and release it, it won't engage when you shut it off. it only does that if the engines running.

Just got an Insignia and it's taking some getting used to. Have far more control with with a manual handbrake when making complexed manoeuvres on an incline in tight spaces. It's baffling how anyone thought an electronic one would be a good idea. I can see them causing lots of accidents for less confident drivers than myself.

I'll be getting the 2018 Peugot 3008 and I'm wondering if that electric handbrake is the same as this Vauxhall one? I did test drive the vehicle, but didn't use the handbrake (only used it to park, but can't find any information online whether you can just use the clutch to release it upon moving).

Hi thank you for reaching out to us, i have done some looking in to it for you and yes it is the same system as the Grandland X.
What made you decide on the Peugeot 3008 instead of the Grandland X?

electric parking brake: Perfect example how to fix something that is not broken! It is going to fail and it is going to leave you stranded! One time it activated at automatic carwash, I could not deactivate it because in my car if the engine is turned off there is some stupid procedure that releases the brake and I did not know how. There were some angry people at the carwash...

There's a serious amount of idiots in this comment section. How can you be confused over how a handbrake works? It's literally the easiest thing about driving. Simple, stop the car, pull the switch. Done. Get back in the car, select first gear if you're driving a manual, and find the bite if you are on an incline then simply accelerate away. The car won't move anywhere until you give it enough gas, that's a guaranteed fact. However, if you blip the throttle, the brake will release even if you don't give it enough gas. So, don't blip the throttle. You just put the car in gear, lift the clutch and once you find the bite, press the throttle and it will release with absolutely no roll back. In the case of an automatic, just select either drive or reverse and press the throttle. That's it. Simple. Don't even think about it, just drive off like normal and it works fine. Releasing it manually will cause you to roll if you're on a hill, or touching the throttle before you have the clutch at the bite point.
