Small-Premium Just Got A Little Bigger | 2020 Buick Encore GX

  • The Encore is Buick's best-selling vehicle, and it's also an odd duck. Buick positions their small CUV between inexpensive options like the EcoSport and full-luxury brands like the Q3 or GLA, but that means its also a price-competitor to a RAV4 or CRV. So if you're looking for something a little more compact than a RAV, a little more luxurious than a Kona and easier on the wallet than a BMW or Volvo, the Buick is an intriguing option.

    • @SIGINT007
      @SIGINT007 4 года назад

      @John Rutherford Correct...the European model of taxing by emission/engine size isn't a "thing" in the USA. For the most part, you pay sales tax one time at purchase to the state and then registration every year, which does vary by vehicle weight (essentially cars are the same, trucks pay on weight).
      I think it would be awesome if something like it was adopted on primary use vehicles as it would remove most of the gigantic brodozer trucks and it's ilk from the road. Of course, this comment will immediately get obscene replies from the mothertruckers on the internet.

If you need something bigger look elsewhere but if you needs a comfortable car with good fuel economy this is for you. It even has good utility for its size and price until at least the Santa Cruz and Maverick come out.

    • @LGMinnesota

      We have an Encore 2019 too, no center arm rest/container and I really miss one. I'm looking at GX for a 2nd vehicle to add. Might go bigger though, thinking Terrain or a Tucson. They both seem much bigger and roomier. This is only 3 inches longer than reg Encore but inside it seems much wider but width wise it's only 1" wider than Encore, go figure.

    • @leevjr686
      @leevjr686 4 года назад +1

      @@LGMinnesota So ... I bought 2 GXs , 1-1.2L and 1-1.3L engines, having traded my Encore up to the GX for about $5K. Highly recommend doing this because both versions get 30+ mpg, the technology offered makes them more drivable and safer, and the small extra width is noticeable and the ride more solid. Both 3 cyl. engines surprised me with power to push you into the seat and are selling for about the same $$ as the 2020 Encore. The armrest and cup holders are much more comfortable and I recommend the power lift gate too. Yes, it's only 1 inch wider, but the cabin design does a lot with that inch! If you go to a bigger car, prepare to get 25 -27 mpg. The "larger" engine will yield 2-3 mpg. more, but regardless I get 32-35 mph. on the highway with the 1.2L version and have left the 28 mpg. driving experience for good. I live in a rural area, so if you live in a major traffic area, the city driving will cost you more gas. The "auto-stop" helps this a lot and recently driving the highway without the A/C for brief periods sent the avg. mpg. well into the 40's for the trip - it's starting to get colder now. These cars a amazing .... good luck.

    I really believe that Buick has figured out the small-ute class. Since the Encore debuted, it has had a devout following. Unlike what Cadillac has done with the XT4, they're not trying to deliver the GX as a true alternative to a BMX X1 or Benz GLA. It is simply a polished everyday small CUV that does what buyers ask. I see a lot of seniors driving Encores, and I can see why. They've gone from Town Cars and Fleetwoods to Encores and others because, outside of sheer size and roominess, they offer refinement and hushed driving dynamics that they require. I will be curious to see how the 3cyl holds up over time though. It brings back Geo Metro memories for me.😬

    I have both the Honda HR-V Sport AWD and this Encore GX AWD and I like the handling of the Honda HR-V around corner or winding road better. The front suspension of this is a bit soft and floating vs. the HR-V. The Encore transmission is lacking too because some it seems like its in a tall gear and the motor lacking power as if you accidently shift into taller gear of a manual and it did not have enough power/speed on low speed. Lastly, the C-pillar so think and obstruction as you turns left or right. Buick should have made it thinner

    Nice summary. A couple interesting points. The 2021 Trailblazer has wireless Android Auto and Apple Car play which isn’t available at all on the more upscale 2020 Buick twin. I assume GM will fix that with the 2021 Encore GX? You also repeatedly listed the CVT as a negative yet you only have to get the AWD version to a get a great 9 speed automatic that’s at least as good as what the Volvo and Germans offer and far nicer than the AWD Toyota, Nissan, and the CVT and clunky much hated dual clutch in the Hyundai/Kia competition. It’s also worth noting you can get adaptive cruise in the midline trims of both this and the Trailblazer while it requires the top trim of much of the competition. You can also get a 360 degree camera system which much of the competition doesn’t have at any price. The XC40, in particular, gets obscenely expensive if those two options are must have items. Hyundai/Kia only have adaptive cruise on the top trims with the nasty dual clutch and no 360 vision at all. Finally, GM has $3250 cash back on the 2020 Encore GX right now which makes it a better deal than a similarly equipped 2021 Trailblazer and you get the much nicer interior, better sound insulation, a more upscale brand, etc. but no wireless phone connectivity.

    The white pearl tri-coat paint is beautiful, but delamination is a problem with Buick paints. Needs a turbocharged 1.8L 4 cylinder and more sound deadening. Lots of tire roar at highway speeds and thrashy 3-cylinder engine noise under load. Not as quiet as buyers expect for a Buick. Well done as always, Alex! Very thorough.

    • @LGMinnesota

    GM did a decent job with the 3 cylinder, but it is not very smooth - it is actually very rough in comparison to the balanced Ecotec 4 cylinder engine. It is strong enough and you get great gas mileage, but smoothness is not part of its DNA which Alex briefly mentions, especially at idle. Test drove this - still don't like 3 cylinder engines. Maybe if gas prices skyrocket it will be popular to build and sell these engines bur right now, not so much. Also, the heads up projector has a small screen - which you have to keep clean unlike the Buick lineup which don't have the screen.Otherwise this SUV seems well executed as it even as Alexa available. I own an Envision which is a foot bigger, do like that car.

  • @OldThomMerton
    @OldThomMerton 3 года назад

    I'm impressed and it has been added to my short list. I am not really comfortable with any compact CUVs and the Sub-compact CUVs are just too small.
    - Honestly, I wouldn't be in the CUV segment if it wasn't for a compressed disk and bad left hip/leg. I am a sports car guy, or at least a sports sedan with good HP/Torque and great cornering ability. So, what I'd like is a relatively quick SUV with competent handling. Reasonably priced CUV's are not known to have a well rounded feel, so I have to compromise.
    - With money as no object, an Acura RDX with SH-AWD would be my first choice; it's only minuses as I see it are the stupid trany controls and the borderline screen interface.
    - The Seltos is on my list, but there are quirks with that vehicle that I could not be sure about until I get one onto the road.
    - The Buick, with deal markdowns, could come in near the top Seltos and get me the AWD. IMO, I find it to be the most all-around attractive CUV in the compact and sub-compact range, and that includes the luxury units. The 1.3 is the only choice for me, although I'd prefer the AWD; I'd want to drive a CVT and a 9A before making a decision. The reasonable handling is attractive to me, entry height looks perfect and the Buick ride would prolly be good for the back.
