  • Ghost of Tsushima introduced players to the story of Jin Sakai, a trained samurai defending his home against Mongol invaders using unconventional means. The PS4/PS5 open-world adventure from Sucker Punch was hailed by its audience, and among its many notable achievements was its opening title card sequence, commonly referenced in discussions about Ghost of Tsushima’s artistry.
But were it not for a simple piece of feedback, that beloved moment in Ghost of Tsushima which has brought streamers to tears wouldn’t have existed the way it does. We spoke to members of the Sucker Punch team, and the PlayStation executive who offered the feedback that inspired them, on how Ghost of Tsushima’s beautiful title sequence came to be. Ahead of the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut launch, learn from the developers themselves about the title card's surprising development process, how it affected Ghost of Tsushima’s broader opening, and how everything came together into the magical moment that introduces Ghost’s open world to players. This is Art of the Level.

I had a scene in my demo where you rode through a field of purple flowers. Serious devs didn't think I was making anything special until they viewed that demo scene. I love this series, far more than any other content produced by IGN. No spoilers or “I played this first” kind of a feel to it.

Agreed. I find it hard to believe IGN produced this, but we need more of this type of content!

When you get a ad for Ghost of Tsushima on a Ghost of Tsushima video!! Literally though, the intro to this game is the best and the music is so amazing.

Nice!!! It def felt like we were watching the birth of a new mega franchise while plying Tsushima. An experience you only get a few times in a gaming career. Absolutely amazing game

This game, this moment was my favorite in a year filled with amazing games to contend with. That this shinned as much as it did and does, says a lot.

This is my favourite game. I wasn't bored once, and I played through it 4 times in a row. I was just completely sucked in - my entire summer/autumn 2020 consisted almost exclusively of Ghost of Tsushima, and I'm not one bit sad about it. I don't get hooked on a game but this one was something else. Just hearing the music now gives me goosebumps!

The moment I knew this game was for me was the early part where you have to cross a bridge and enemies are picking you off with arrows. I remember running and jumping off the bridge and assassin killed the enemy…. one of my favourite gaming moments of all time

It now saddens me that I can’t cut through the enemies spears like in the demo.
I love this game so much, it’s definitely one of my favourites in my three and a half decades on this earth. There are a few things I feel it’s lacking, but mostly it has what I want, what I need.
If I were to mention a few things I feel are lacking they would be:
    - A feeling that the mongols are actually being driven back, and that you aren’t alone in the fight. Some fights between samurai and mongols, or even increasing or decreasing amounts of clashes between them, would make it feel like you’re actually gaining control of the islands.
    - Different weapons like spears, or kanabo, or maybe using both swords, just the tanto or unarmed combat. I would love it if there was a way to use judo throws, breaking arms or similar things so I could choose not to kill.
    - Hunting for food, campfires and other ways to feel like you’re in the world, not just playing a game. I personally love that stuff, and I think it would make for a great addition, like having peasant offer you a meal for your help, cooking to get boosts, and eating at inns that have been returned to their owners. I think it would make the world feel like the inhabitants actually have needs as well, but I don’t know.
    - Something that has been annoying me on my ng+ is that I can’t make my assassinations raw again. I wouldn’t mind being able to toggle which assassination animations I would have.
Thank you, Suckerpunch, for making this great game. I eagerly await a sequel, any future dlc or add ons. Can’t wait! ❤️❤️❤️

What I wish there was in the game is the possibility to make the standoffs like in the e3 demo. No slow motion, no glint, just fast deadly strike that you can hardly see.

This is indeed one of the most cinematic title sequences I've ever experienced as a gamer. It gives me goosebumps, not unlike an amazing scene in an epic movie. Props to everyone at Sucker Punch and PlayStation who contributed to this. Thank you IGN for diving into these little but very interesting stories of game development.

This is what I like about SP - they don't view criticisms or suggestions as something negative. They listen and roll it around and if it has merit, they go with it. A colaboration of ideas that make it better.

I still get chills for this opening. By far the best opening I've ever seen. The timing of the music with the breaking of the treeline is just beautiful. I can't imagine a more perfect way to start such an amazing game. This game is the best game I've played ever. The fact that the developers decided to add a multiplayer mode for free with no paid skins and stuff, just icing on the cake.
