    Good collection. I'm collecting all sorts of Calathea. Among all, I think white fusion is the fussiest and I trust i have nearly killed it. I have only one leave grew out like 2 weeks ago.. it was about to expand then it curled up last night. So I moved it away from the window to a much shaded area. Living in a tropical country with high humidity should enable my calathea to thrive indoor, yet still, lots of proper care on these plants could not be ignored!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  4 года назад +1

      Yes, Fusion Whites are notoriously difficult. I had to completely regrow mine a while back after humidity stress turned every single leaf crispy after a winter of using the heater. I just had a little disaster in plant room with the humidifier creating optimal fungal/mold problems and had to turn it off for a few weeks. Of course my Fusion White protested and browned a few of its leaf tips up in anger. I will probably spend this summer making peace with it! 😊

I’ve recently moved to a house so I can put mine outside for the warm months and collect rain water so I’m super excited about expanding my collection without being limited by distilled water. . Hey Addy Beez, hang in there with the Calathea zebrina! It is a gorgeous one. Yours looks stretched out and in need of some extra light. I have one in a 4" pot that I almost threw out after battling mealy bugs. I kept it quarantined in my bedroom, and it has sprung to life just to the side of a south facing window with rich bushy growth. It has gone from two to seven small plants between early March to now. It seems to grow very fast once it likes its conditions. I have a second mature zebrina in a 9" pot in a similar lighting situation -- dappled morning sunlight near a south facing window. I think it is my favorite plant behind my C. warscewiczii.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  4 года назад +1

      That is a good call! I actually burned the poor Zebrina with too much light and then really pulled it too far back to let it recoup. It has settled into a good spot now and I took it out of the terracotta. That has made a huge difference as I think the moisture level in the terracotta was always very inconsistent and it's a young plant to deal with water stress (I am better with glazed ceramic--the terracotta isn't really at fault). Keep your fingers crossed for me and thanks for the tips!

    wow
    what a collection.
    you're the calathea Queen.
    you've inspired me to try them.
    got a very fair price on 5.
    lost my fusion white, and medallion.
    ornata, freddie, & vittata doing pretty darn good.
    a couple of questions, please.
    do you find white tiger easier than confusion fright...um!, fusion white?
    think it'll be a matter of time until white star are readily available, vs mail ordering? new growth only have pink tones?
    being tropical, is it fair to say most varieties will push out new growth..
    say...around...memorial day? or,
    are your calath's leafing out year round?
    your mix seems to be very perlite forward. my plants were all grown in peat moss, without any perlite or pumice. i just potted them up (bought them back in november '19). i just used peat, BUT, coarse peat, not a fine,
    turns into adobe brick if it goes dry, peat moss.
    they all seem content. only been 2 weeks...that a fair span of time to judge?
    thank you. keep on inspiring.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  4 года назад +1

      😂 Oh, confusion fright IS right! The white tiger has actually been a little bit easier. However, it had some more mature growth when I got it, compared to my fusion white. Regarding the whitestar pink tones, I've read a lot back and forth about this, and heard a lot of from other people online. From what I've read, the pink fades over time to cream. There are a number of calatheas that have the pink tones that fade and you can look at the patents to see which remain pink at maturation. I am going to have to see if that's true for the whitestar myself! I do use a lot of perlite, a lot. One of the problems I've had with calatheas is soil compaction that occurs pretty slowly over time. I do aerate my potting soil now but in the beginning, I had a few calatheas end up suffocating a bit as the soil was compacting, impeding drainage, and so the roots weren't able to take in oxygen. I have a video on calathea leaf problems where I show pictures of what it looks like when a calatha is suffocating--everything falls flat pretty much immediately. Thankfully, it is a dramatic and easy to spot warning to get oxygen to the roots ASAP. Thanks so much for your comment--definitely inspired some new ideas.

    Does calathea rossy will loose it's pink color by time just like philodendron pink congo?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  4 года назад +2

      Hi! 😊 Good question. No, the calathea rosy is not like the pink congo, in that its coloring is the result of a mutation that occurred naturally. Meaning that the color on the rosy wasn't artificially induced through a temporary chemical application. If you look at the patent for the rosy, this is what it says regarding coloring:
      "1. The plant produces leaves having centers variably marked with metallic pink and silver-green. 2. The amount of pink in the center of the leaf varies with the age and maturity of the plant, from entirely pink when juvenile to becoming silvery-green with flecks of pink when mature."
      So, there may be less pink on the leaves as the plant matures but it won't go away entirely. Here's a link to the patent if you'd like to read more: patents.google.com/patent/USPP8836P/en
      And thank you for a good question!

    How do you tell the difference between fertilizer burn and burning from sun?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  3 года назад +1

      When I have gotten fertilizer burn, it usually happens around the margins/edges of the leaves. Burns from the sun tend to show up away from the edges and over time, the burns tend result in the tissue thinning until there is a hole in the leaf. Hope this helps!

  • @BabyNishNish

    I want to know if there is any way you can propagate the white star and medallion apart from root division....also neem oil is expensive in Trinidad I pay $40.00TTD which is like 6US for 0.5ml which is alot to use for plants however I have a neighbor with a neem plant can I take the leaves soak it in water or boil it or blend it and use it as a fertilizer spray?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  4 года назад +1

      Hi, Nisha. Yes, that is expensive!! I don't know how you can extract the right properties directly from a neem plant but if I come across any information, I will definitely let you know. Regarding propagation--I know calatheas can theoretically be grown from seed. I do have some calatheas that flower but I haven't ever tried to extract the seeds, which maybe I will... as far as rooting calatheas in water, I have never seen that work so I have only ever done division myself. I've also seen calathea seeds for sale online but the reviews haven't been good. I'll look into it a little more, as I am curious about growing from seed.

I am hoping I've managed to eradicate its spider mites for now but only time will tell. And, yes--I've had a lot of people tell me that their networks, and musaicas in general, are their easiest calatheas. I think there is something about the humidity/conditions in my house that is a bit better for roseopictas but I won't give up! 😊

    I love your videos and how informative you are. I’m currently waiting on my Calathea Peacock to arrive (my third calathea).What kind of fertilizer would you recommend? Would miracle grow burn my leaves lol?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  4 года назад +3

      Because I get a lot of plants that have been over fertilized, I've backed off synthetic fertilizers and now use pretty much just worm castings (this won't burn the roots). This spring, I may try some really diluted fish emulsion, we'll see. For calatheas, I would use a light hand with miracle gro. I think you can dilute it enough to keep your plants' roots safe. When I was using synthetic fertilizers, I would usually dilute the recommended amount to 25% strength and then only apply it once a month. It can definitely build up in the soil, so I would keep an eye on the plants as you go and when you water, make sure you water well enough that water comes out of the drainage hole. I hope this helps! 😊

    Do you think that will work?

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  4 года назад +2

      I'm not sure about the sun intensity that you get through your window--though I do have some calathea about three feet away from a south-facing window that has sheer curtains to diffuse the light and they love it there during the summer. In the winter, the sun tracks further south and so I have to pull them back a bit more (approximately 5 feet). I do keep an eye on them and, when I wasn't paying attention, one got a couple of sunburns, so I think as long as you can check on it to make sure the light isn't too strong, that just might work!

    Im only a minute in but I did exactly what you said! I got greedy abs separated a Cora abs one died! so sad. the other only had 2 leaves. they immediately curled up abs got crispy edges. It has been dying a very slow death for over a few weeks. I still have that one leaf with no change but I can tell its not improving. Do you have recommendations on how I might save it? Its currently in a 2 inch pot under a grow light. PLEASE HELP
