I found this video at the right time for me
I will be hatching quail for the 1st time in 8 weeks and was stuck on what to use as a brooder. Now I have the answer
Wonderful. Glad it helped
I used a big rubber maid stock tank I got a yard sale. When the birds got big enough I'd clip netting over the top. It was a huge pain to clean but kept them safe and warm. I use brooder plates rather than lamps and recommend them.
I bought a device that lets out an alarm if the power to the brooder plate goes out. I also have used a temperature monitor.
I did six hatches this way and I'm done with that. I'm in my third year of keeping quail and I have a real stainless steel brooder on its way ($200).
I hope I can provide some quail to people in my state so people don't have to spend all the money and time on incubators and brooders and I can sell 5 week old quail. It really is a learning curve no matter how much research you do.

For my lil brooder I got 3 totes. I cut 3 inches out of the bottom of one ,built a wooden frame with 1/4 inch hardware cloth attached it in the bottom of the one I cut the bottom off of. I then placed a bead of sealant around the edges to keep stuff from getting in between the frame and the tote this also covered the edges of the hardware cloth. I would then put about an inch of shavings in one of the other totes. Then place the one I modified into the one I put the shavings in. When I would get ready to change the shavings I would use the 3rd tote put shavings in it and just pull the other tote out of the one that needed to be changed then place it in the one with new shavings. The clean the dirty one out get it ready for the next change out.
Like you I use the blue paper towels the first couple weeks. I also put a ceramic tile in the brooder for a stable place to set the water.

I use a heavy duty tote bigger than that 1 I cut the lid out of it and put wire over it and use a heat lamp. I use a reptile thermostat to kick my heat lamp on and off. And I use rabbit cages in an old office trailer for my Quail room. I use training puppy pads in the bottom of my rabbit cage is easy clean out.
All I have to do is pull out One tray Replace it with a clean puppy pad in another tray. Wipe the dirty tray into a trash bag put a clean puppy pad in it and you're ready for the next cleaning.

Really good video Zach!! Thank you! We have an extra large tote clear for brooder. We have used both heat plate and the heat mat. With heat mat we made a "hut" to go over top, it works, we got plate later, both work well. I go to dollar store and get 10 pack of dog training pads, they worked really well. People, please, when you're doing an outside cage, if a mouse can squeeze through the wire, so can a weasel. We learned the hard way with our first covey. Killed all of them. Use hardware cloth over top. You don't want that heartbreak. We had no idea we had weasels around, were more concerned with bigger predators.

A trick I've found is putting a layer of bedding under the paper towels. If I'm using a large water and feeder I'll do the pellet horse better mixed in.

Big cardboard box works! And actually, if you have a good wall, you can open up the folds of a cardboard box, turn it sideways/longways and fold the side flaps IN, put that on the floor, and stand it up - fold small flaps for ends against the wall. Put a layer of plastic (trash bag, whatever) and staple all the way around, going up the sides about 8 inches (and the wall you are putting it against). Cut the corners on the inside and tape/staple. You have just made a "bigger than the box" pen to raise quail!

A yoga mat , cut in approx 5 pieces to fit tote, is great as it can be rolled up, tote cleaned with anti bacteria wipes, then mat replaced & chicks returned to tote. Yoga mats easily washed and reused.

I know this is a year old but I’m still raising chicks in totes, I use puppy pee pads. No litter dust and sucks up the water. That’s just what works for me. Just an fyi. Take care.

Another great video, thank you. I personally like the tractor method it works great for me because I combine my quail with gardening and they weed and fertilise my growing beds. The only downside is that collecting the eggs is harder. Unfortunately I have to relocate with my family back to England next year so will need to start again with my quail.

@@MyshireFarm thank you, I have had some beautiful quail hatch from your eggs. I just hope I can find some good quality hatching eggs once we get home. I managed to find someone who wanted to get into breeding to take my breeding quail. I also put them onto your website and RUclips channel for learning how to breed them.
Only six minutes into the video, but I wanted to comment that I have successfully reared chicks (from chickens) using a reptile heating pad in a container less fancy than a rubbermaid tub, haha. I live in a sub-tropical climate, however, and I don't know if quail chicks are more delicate, making the heat lamp/plate a must, but I wanted to put it out there that it is possible. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and share this information, I'm looking heavily into raising quail since the area we moved into doesn't allow chickens.
The quail hatch out a 1/3 of the size of a chicken chick so they are much more heat dependent but possible but you will really need to watch them that way. Good comment and question
My only big expense was Wynola cages. They got a new big shed. Needed more space in the garage for other stuff anywhere.

When the quail first hatch I have to put marbles in the waterer so they don't get too wet or drown. That way you don't lose any babies. When they get bigger the marbles come out.

I use a Guinea pig cage and the rubber shelf liners from dollar tree. No mess and no slipping. Don’t soak up any water though.

Also, I am using spagnum peat moss under the flooring to catch the poo. It's great for the garden, right? The peat moss makes it easier to remove and spread.

I use the 100 watt ceramic bulb heat lamps and they work great and I use a small lamp next to the brooder for light

That is amazing comparison! I am planning to have 6 feet x 2 feet small 6 quail larger cage with bedding and plants that I hoped they would be raised more freely and part pet like, yet based on your comment on potentially becoming territorial, im now worried. How many quails should be raised in such size coop?
6 chicks per sq ft in brooder and 3 quail per sq ft after 4 cages

I was just thinking about that. All of the birds one is going to cull could possibly be sold for animal food, now that feeding pets with real fresh meat is so popular.
And people will spend tons of money on their animals.
We use 1/4 inch hardware cloth lid and set the reptile heat element bulb in the heat lamp right on the lid. We use the thermostat control. We start with the blue paper towels for day 0- day 7, then switch to fir shavings. We had most of the things we needed from raising chickens and ducks. We just had to buy a bigger incubator. And we built an aviary for about $250. We also bought a chicken house/pen when we upgraded to more birds.

When I start this project I will likely use an old reptile terrarium, ceramic heat emitter and thermostat i have laying around. Exo terra front opening terrarium. Ceramic heat emitters are used in reptile hobby because they don't produce light, work well with a thermostat flicking them on and off and tend to dry out the air - not good for some creatures but maybe ok for quail.

Cant wait to know what you come up with amount of feed a quail consumes. I know the charts for cornish cross chickens and broad breasted turkeys really help me when I first started raising them to help me gauge if I was on track growing them out.

@@MyshireFarm oh no. I like seeing how things have been improved. I've been raising animals around 6-7 years now and LOVE when I improve something to make it faster and easier! Getting rid of the smell is currently my main concern for new neighbors. I've thought about the Conveyor idea, but wasn't sure how to build it, then forgot all about it. Thinking I'll look more into now that I've learn alot over the years trial and error.

Question! Do quail ever huddle up together, to stay warm, like chickens do? I've not seen them do this. But it might be because I always come out and see them walking around (they hear me coming). Do they "herd up", or just plop down where ever they are to "sleep"?

I had several people tell me my problem was heat lamp on plastic tote as my brooder saying it created toxic fumes. Is this not the case? I assumed this was the reason all my chicks died one after another.
He did say that a heat lamp on top of a plastic brooder is not a safe idea but that they didn't know that when they started.
I have heard that before. I am sure that is true if the plastic starts to melt but the main reason people are against them is the fire hazard. We had it right in middle not against tote so we never had that problem.
how do you get them to drink something? and do they need red light or is normal light fine if you use a heat plate?
They do not need a red light and you don’t have to reach them to drink like chicken chicks they get it right away

Why the blue paper towels specifically? Would regular white ones work?
Blue are thicker and better for their legs. White will give them splay leg as they can not grip.

No probably not until April except for the dates. That is about it
Are Quail as beneficial to your garden as chickens?
Absolutely. Papa the builder has a all about poop talk about the benefits of quail compost and we do it every year. It is on his playlist papa builder of things
It is, with modification. Quail droppings are a hot fertilizer so you should not just drop it on plants straight from the brooder. My two ways to handle it. 1) compost it and the shavings for 3 months or so. 2) Dilute it. I put shavings and all in a 55gal drum and it let soak for a week. Then I tap the drum and use 1 part mix to 9 parts water. It is a great nitrogen boost for the plants.

Those j-feeders aren't predator proof at all. That's why they are for rabbits not quail. Why would you say they are fine?
We have 74 cages and all have j feeders and we have not had any issues with any predators. But there are many different ways to raise quail.
