Presumably no one saw this 👆comment?? Maybe you could do a “copyright friendly” remake of one of your favourite film builds? Or do a show and tell of some projects you’ve made for film through the years? It’s always cool to be watching a film or show and say “Hey! I know the guys that made that!”
I really dig your videos, man. They show the side of crafting that is at times the most frustrating, but also the most rewarding part. The journey of learning as you go.
The result is absolutely lovely, and I really appreciate you incorporated your mistakes along the process; most creators will make sure to get flawless editing, but learning and exploring are a big (and exciting) part of creation. I wish I'd see more. Been following you for a while now, It's always a pleasure, coming back to your videos.
I can't fault anything in this show from the design and dialogue to the production editing and especially the camera work it's outstanding. thank you and all the best from Scotland
If you glue thin cloth on the back of the leather before gluing the end pages, it makes the leather a little more rigid and leaves a nice surface for the end pages to be glued securely. Making the first of anything is tricky even when you have experience with similar projects. Great video!
Not a bad attempt, in the end it came out looking nice! Hopefully you learned that the order of operations in book making is VERY important. Typically after i make the text block (spine glued, headbands, etc) i clamp it between 2 planks of wood and then glue the leather onto the spine only, then wrap cotton twine around the whole rig to press the leather firmly against the spine bands and then burnish everything down nice and evenly. After the spine dries, the cover pages go on, then the cover itself, then glue the cover page to the cover neatly. If you have straps or decorations, a spare sheet of 6mm or thicker EVA foam can be sandwiched between the plank and the outer cover to provide even pressure over the surface. Also be sure to put a piece of masonite or thin smooth plywood between glued cover page and the free cover page on both sides for a more even finish
Trial and error is bonus learning, thanks for including those. Good call with that change in gold paint. I was commissioned to do a guest (book)scroll out of brown butcher paper. :/ Didnt color, just aged the surface. I worked the paper with a mist spritzer and an ironer. It controlled the amount of water damage added without needing to press it flat. Also keeps the paper from rolling. Maybe a useful trick for ya, maybe not 😅
I remember the first time I tried to do a hard cover binding. It was a disaster. You are brave sir. Awesome result though. Kudos to you for not giving up and honestly, I think most of us can relate to changing something, not liking it, going back to changing it again until we're happy. It's all part of the creative process.
I dunno, that spine stuff is pretty straight forward in my opinion, might take a couple views. The Headbanding is tough, and it's why I did link another video in the description that I felt did a better job of describing it.
The result is absolutely gorgeous. I've done a few (very few) hardcover bookbindings myself, and they're super tricky. I think you did great. There were a few times during the process where I was thinking "no no, not like that" and "should have been the other way around" - but honestly... this stuff is so finicky - and I don't even really know, if I've been doing it right to begin with
Love it. I've been watching people bind books for a long time, trying to decide how I want to do it and it bothers me that I haven't actually done one yet. Hahaha
Instead of bothering with paint I would have tried the patina solution. Apply it with a paint brush just to the letters and call it a day. You still get a natural metallic look that stands out just enough not to look out of place. And endsheets are definitely a science that takes many... many failed experiments to perfect. To anyone struggling, add more leather to your hinge area and use spray adhesive instead of pva.
My daughter says the Just Add Magic cookbook, but i'd say its pages are more special than the bound book itself. For me, the Book of the dead from The Mummy is the first one that comes to mind!
Hey Magnus, what was the thickness of the leather used for the cover? You've shown me some new budget friendly ways to do a project I've had on the back burner for a while. Awesome work as always
Cover was maybe 3-4oz, just be sure you can either skive it if it's too thick, or fold it if you can't skive it. As long as whatever your end result is, as long as you can fold it nicely over your end boards that's all you really need

What do you want to see me build next? No joke, looking for some inspiration!

Thanks for the longer view of the finished item... ;)
I was like.. this is toooo looooong.
Incredible work as usual!
Looks great. I like that you included your missteps and mistakes.
There was so many of them I was worried about making a long video longer. Haha.

This was 100% more interesting than I thought it would be! Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it! Hahaha.
Great job,
I'm sure this would take me once or twice to get it looking similar 👍
You can do it!

Great video man!
Thanks, that looks great.
Glad you like it
Excellent results! I just love to see you reorienting your art when it does not come up to your expectations. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!
Wonderful craftsmanship!
Learned how to make my journals based off your videos! Love that you are doing a big book!
I really liked learning your book making process and learning how to be more confident with leather. It looks incredible, awesome job.
Happy to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. :)
Labour of love! But it looks awesome
Holy crap that was fun to watch! Nice work.
That came out Awesome !
Beautiful! Thank you for this
Glad you like it!

This was a really cool video! Great work!
Fascinating watch. Really hard to follow on stitching, both spine and head despite repeat. Thanks for the resource links.

Definitely. Can't wait to try it.

OUTSTANDING! And I've sent the QuestHaven link to my group.
That looks amazing.
Dude you have an awesome art channel made me subscribe just by watching this video keep up the good work.
Thank you so much 😀

Just need to dive in face first, you'll be fine.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop probably right. I'll post a pic of my first one.
No time like the present!
U should make more to sell cuz I love it I’d buy one

I actually did patina the letters, I skipped showing yet another thing I did with them. Just looked not right.
Beautiful job! I would have loved to see the footage of you losing your mind fwiw. =)
Next time!
What is the GREATEST book in Film? Necronomicon is my choice, what's yours?
My daughter says the Just Add Magic cookbook, but i'd say its pages are more special than the bound book itself. For me, the Book of the dead from The Mummy is the first one that comes to mind!
The Neverending Story book is my choice.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Megadodo Publications.
So I just saw the recently made Dune and I love it so far. We shall see how it all turns out but this just might be my all time favorite.
@@azuritet3 Douglas Adams ❤️
I am curious as to how well that acrylic lasts on the cover? Does it wear away much?
Badass bro!

Although is seems do able..just seems like a long process and an enormous amount of work......still the book looks worth the time...
nice work
Thanks
Pretty cool bro...
Thanks!
Nice work! Where did you get the peen rivets/washers from. Didn't see them in the description.

How thick the leather for cover is? I make my first book with lether cover and I use 0,7 mm thick lether. To make embossing I must use hot tool's.
Super Cool 😎
Do you think you could use center buckles instead of the heel ones? Or would they be too bulky/not lay flat or something?
I specifically don't like them because they're usually too bulky and stick out. But you could certainly use them.
Coolness!
I want to do this and thousand projects more but I kinda just sleep all day
❤️
Oh ho
