- Want to see REAL WARFARE recreated in a movie? All Quiet on the Western Front used ACTUAL WWI German veterans for authenticity! #AllQuietontheWesternFront
As a German we watched this movie in school and its one of the best anti war movie you will ever see its a masterpiece my great grandpa fought at the Somme my dad said that he has nearly no stories about it because my great granddad wasnt able to tell them cause he would just cry not able to say a thing
Yes and because of the strong writing of Remarque I believe he was band in Germany and his novels were confiscated and burned at that time.
RIP to your great grandfather 🙏
It's the greatest anti- war movie ever made!
@@stevelofts8135 I believe so. Unfortunately, humanity in general never learns and the world as of late is in a state of high tension.
My great grandfather fought in the First World War as a light horseman in the Australian Imperial Force in Egypt, Palestine and Syria. He died before I was born, but my father said he never spoke about the war. Out of curiosity I looked up his unit and it turned out he participated in several battles, many with fierce hand to hand combat. I can't even begin to imagine the horrors he had seen.
Fun fact, a 1955 film by Edvin Laine, was made in a similar way. Ww2 vets were enlisted as Edvin was one himself, and real archival footage was dispersed in with the movie footage to make it realistic. Many still think 'Tuntematon Sotilas' is one of the greatest Finnish war films. Also, an actor named Reino Tolvanen was cast, both because he was a veteran, and because of his distinct dialect.
I understand "Weekend at Dunkirk" asked British and French soldiers to come back and play themselves in the 1963 movie.
Jesus Christ Loves you all so much that HE died and suffered for you all to save you from sin and death. And whoever believes and puts their entire Faith and Life into HIS hands shall be saved Amen❤
1958 "A night to Remember" a movie about Titanic did the same thing
All's Quiet on the Western Front is the best war movie ever made as far as I'm concerned. It was actually an anti-war movie. They did a remake in the '70s but it was nowhere near as good.
To Hell and Back basically does lol
it’s gotta be insane acting in a movie about something you actually did irl
Well, not if it's done in a way to make this a 100% anti-war movie, with nothing to be made "look better" but keeping the gritty and ugly realism.
There's actually a Finnish ww2 film "tuntematon sotilas (1955)/unknown soldier (from the year 1955)" where most if not all actors are actual veterans who served during the Soviet-Finnish wars and it's also written by a veteran Väinö Linna.
They've also made a modern version of the same movie in 2017. It's extremely good!
@@1pruut1 i need to look that up. Thanks :)
Film was from 2022... ww1 ended in 1918... even if they were 18 at the end of the war, they would have been 120 years old... no ww1 vet saw this movie.
@@siege2928talking about the 1930 one lil bro
One thing to remember too is that the movie was made in 1929-1930. The Great War was still very fresh in everyone’s mind. It’s like if we got veterans to consult on a movie about the GWOT in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
It was also extremely controversial because aton of the screens such as violence, graphic, unmarried men/women alone in a bedroom even tho it didnt show anything, Anti-war and more.
That’s so sad because they had no idea another war was right around the corner 😢
I hope that in some small way, working with the movie may have alleviated some of their PTSD.
Edit: I don’t want to discredit responses, but understand that PTSD is variable. Some endure alone. Some seek help. Too many don’t realize/understand how to feel.
Too many Veterans (from all conflicts) deal with it in isolation, even with family around. Far too many each day decide to end their struggle prematurely.
If you know a Veteran, reach out. Doesn’t matter if you agree with what they fought for. As a person, treat them as a person who may need an anchor right now!
They did what they believed was right at the time;be the friend or person to step up and help someone today!
Well we cant know that now theyre all dead
@@terjeaasheim3651yeah it suck’s they really are… whatever it may be they can rest now
That is a very thoughtful comment. I hope so, too, but I worry that it may have made it worse by dredging up bad memories.
Why do we assume nowadays that everyone who fought in WW1 got PTSD? If they volunteered for this job then they are obviously mentally ready for it.
😂😂😂@@WD-5o
Amazing movie not gonna lie though it’s wild that there were German ww1 veterans just in LA
How many were there ?
none, the last german veteran of ww1 died in 2008
@@thedinosdream3056 WERE
To be fair, WW1 Germany wasn't an 'evil' country per se, like in WW2, it was just 1 side of a brutal War, same as the other central powers. Allies were just 1 side of a war. WW2 was certainly different, it was definitely a matter of good vs evil. So the soldiers could go to the U.S. or any other allied countries. They were still seen as war veterans, not criminals.
@thedinosdream3056 Yea they are dead now but when the film got filmed they still lived the sentence is written in the past so your komment makes no sense.
WW2 veteran: I am a world war veteran do i get some discount?
Barista: yes of course here you go 25%off thank you for your service.
WW2 veteran: danke
Ayo💀
Yooo thats a good one
“Danke schön, Hab einen wundervollen Tag” 😉
I knew a German WWII vet whose girlfriend who had been Hitler youth as a child (the girl version, I forgot the formal name). My grandpa was American combat infantry in WWII in Europe, and I remember my grandparents and the German couple hanging out and having beer outside in the summer talking about the old days. The attitude of both on the war was that both sides had their job to do, but it wasn't personal.
Whats the joke
This is such a disturbing film it’s comforting to know it’s actually filmed in sunny rural California.
A German Mini-Series from the late 1950's did the same thing. It's called 08/15 and it's the German WW2 Band of Brothers.
I thought Generation War was the German Band of Brothers.
@@rc59191 Generation War is a pile of steamy crap compared to O8/15.
@@mikebrase5161 well at least it actually takes place in ww2 and thus fits the bill more for a German version of band of brothers
@@rc59191it sucked.
@@mikebrase5161 hear hear! The more recent german WWII productions (including the "Das Boot" remake and the "Die Brücke" remake") are all absolute forgettable crap.
There will never be a more accurate portrayal in film of this. Not now the veterans are gone
You are a little off, there weren’t some German veterans in the movie, all extras In he movie are German veterans. Fun fact: The scene where the French man is exploded and only his hand was left actually happened, it was scene by one of the extras and asked for it to be in the movie.
I wouldn’t necessarily call that a fun fact
That was the least fun fact I ever read man...
Note to self: When talking about sad or macabre facts, use other words to describe them such as "interesting" or the aforementioned "sad."
Was actually going to make this comment myself, just not phrase it as a fun fact.
The soldier who suggested adding this to the movie saw it happen WW1. French infantry were charging, and one managed to reach the barbed wire. As the man put his hands on the wire, an artillery shell exploded, and the German soldier who saw it ducked down behind the trench wall.
When he looked up again to where that soldier used to be, the only things left of the man were his hands, still clutching the barbed wire. Man was atomized, and the only proof a man had ever been there were the two hands he left behind.
I couldn't imagine seeing something like that. WW1 was horribly barbaric, and lives were needlessly lost on all sides due to idiotic generals who didn't understand that Napoleonic war tactics didn't mix well with modern weaponry... it was truly a senseless waste of lives.
Unfun fact
Forget Netflix this is the true masterpiece. And read it !
I saw it on Netflix
I like the part in the book where Paul talks about how him and his comrades would poop naked in a field together using the sounds of their bowel movements to express their current emotions

It's really cool that some these original world War one Germans actually demonstrated for us What it was like to charge into no man's land and fight in the trenches.

The original movie was better than the remake by a large margin.
I prefer the 78 version but the one from the 30s is still really good
I liked the remake in a vacuum. It's so far from the book (which is a remarqueable read, highly recommend it) though, it's barely an adaptation anymore.
The 2022 one?
I think the the 1930 one is the best the 1978 version is alright the 2022 version I think is a really really good one but I think the ending was quite stupid

The 1930 film All Quiet on the Western Front also has a sequel movie The Road Back. Paul and the others are already dead and Tjaden is the only recurring character from the All Quiet. There's an uploaded video of that here in RUclips.
Thanks for the heads up

😂
Dude….
Something people overlook about WWI, is that there wasn't any true bad guys. Like in WWII, we all know who were the bad guys, but here, its more neutral when it comes to that
He's referring to the 1930 version not the new Netflix version . The last German veteran died in 2008 his name was Erich Kästner. You're all very gullible. 😂😂😂😂
Obviously
Erich Kästner fought in ww1?! Why theyd Burn his books
@@RonHavermaswdym burned his books?
War is hell.
War is crime, everythere!
My grandfather fought the french ... and he fought the russians. He died in Stalingrad in hand to hand combat. Just thinking about the fact that his whole life was just about two great wars is crazy to me ... the baby boomer generation of the west was kinda blessed after WWII. The generations after were kinda lucky in comparision. Let's hope that we don't see a full blown third one...
It's better than the Netflix tragedy that made us listen to inception horn.
Wow never heard of this film. Gotta check it out.
*Now imagine if the Napoleon movie was this realistic.*
Joaquin Phoenix was actually a colonel in Napoleon's army believe it or not
You should watch Waterloo if you haven't already if you want a way more realistic film in that time period
Another thing:
The directors of the film also discussed the veteran's experiences with them, and some moments from their stories even made it into the film.
Like one scene during a French charge, a soldier is tripped up by an artillery impact and grabs on to some barbed wire to pull himself back up, only to be killed by another shell. When the smoke clears, all we see is his severed hands still grasping the wire.
That came from one story.
There's a scene in the movie after the barbed wire is placed where the enemy is charging toward the barbed wire barrier. As they reach it, bombs fall and nothing but an enemy's hands are left gripping the wire. That happened in real life. One of the veterans recounted the story
A movie Creator who actually really put love in his movie i respected.
"We were not soldiers, We were not even men... We were just boys... Small, Naive scared boys.."
1917 and All Quiet do a great job at depicting just how bloody awful the Great War was.
One of those German veterans also once saw a French soldier get blasted by an artillery piece while he was charging their trench.
When the smoke cleared, all that was left of that French soldier were two hands, still holding onto barbed wire.
If any had PTSD, i bet theirs went off the chain and gave them that rhousand yard stare.
It’ll actually get them focus and control reliving it
I read the book some years ago. It was horrifying, I couldn't finish it. War is absolute hell and there is barley any justification for it
Yes the part of the book where he's talking about the soldier he saw running on his blow off stubs without having any feet & still getting up to run forward through no man's land is like the craziest thing u will ever hear about in the history of any warfare !!!!!
Fun fact: Mexicans actually fought along side with america in WW1 and WW2. They’re reward is have full American citizenship. Also they were over 15,000 Mexicans and 1,500 missing or killed
Mexicans risking their life for a better one, for their families is saddening
They should have just stayed in Mexico I guess
@@MLawrence-z9k no it's just that fact that risking your life in a war is nessecary to even get a better life for your family is saddening, just imagine them die in combat and never being able to support their family after the war ends
I like them all but personally the new one was just way to over exaggerated and didn’t focus on what they felt as too more of what happened but then to try and depict and remake something so unpredictable that was so long ago is something of almost impossible
Germans had the coolest uniforms in both World Wars.
well after the pickelhaube yeah
This is definitely facts but I equally did love the American WW2 uniforms during D day ❤
Judging by the time this film was made too during the depression years I’m sure these disenfranchised Germans who probably were happy to have a job were happy to be working on something
We ran through the night through the streets of the French town, the night sky lit up by flares and fires of burning houses
Ahead were our comrades, heavy dark shadows, helmet, rifle silhouette.
We followed down a narrow cobbled lane.
They turned again through a gated archway towards an orchard .
As they passed out of sight a shell burst in the air in front of us and over them .
Carried by our momentum we entered the orchard and were immediately enveloped in a heavy pink mist.
Our vapourised comrades .
I thought the guy at the end got fucking sniped lmao.
He did
And those WW1 German veterans did not freak out with PTSD while re-living their war days?
Gen Z (1996-2012) mental issues: "OMG, my crush is ghosting me, I have PTSD now, need therapy and will be forced to work in home office for the rest of my life because social anxiety kicks in!"
Lost Generation (1883-1900) mental issues: "2 of my friends died next to me while I killed 3 guys and then I had to cut off my remaining comrade's leg with a dirty bayonet to stop the sepsis. I think I can handle a movie."
You can still see the set at universal in Hollywood
So they actually just built an army out of actors 💀💀💀
Imagine living through that war and seeing yourself running through the mud again.
The level of censorship this story endured is criminal. Everyone should know it.
The movie was banned for being anti German in Germany and banned for being pro German in other countries.
Thats how you know its a true anti war film
still the best of the many All quiet movies...skilled actors and no computer effects
This is the best version so far!
Movies today rarely care about historical accuracy this much. Now they just throw garbage at you
Welcome to the mediocrity of modern cinema: where artistry and accuracy are gone, and explosions, CGI and sex are all that sell now.
It's pitiful to believe that just ~50 years ago, we had movies that told compelling stories (retellings of epics and dramas from millenniums ago), and did it WELL. Nowadays, it's all flash and pizazz, with little-to-no care about story, character, and narrative/world building, in general.
I think this is the best war film ever made, though what is good about war?...
Survival
That your family isn't raped, murdered or enslaved for a start. If you don't fight for something, you don't value it. If you don't fight for anyone, you're deficient in compassion.
Absolutely nothing!
The thumbnail is something similar tho..
I really should watch this movie didnt have the time yet😢
U better watch it in the dark all by yourself at night because it's like a horror film tbh & the greatest war film ever made because it feels like watching real actual WW1 footage!!!! It's amazing & intense without needing tons of CGI & special effects & music
Why do you edit in yellow subtitles if you are just going to make them junp and move so fast that it makes them impossible to read?
It might just be you that’s a little slow, I can read them just fine

There's a scene in All Quiet on the Western Front where a French soldier falls, then picks himself up with the help of some barbed wire fence, only to get blown up and all thats left of him be his hands. Apparently, that scene actually happened in real life and was put in because a German veteran from the war mentioned it in passing. The director heard the veteran talking about it and asked if it would be alright to put it in the movie.
I feel like it really shows how much of this movie is true to the experiences of soldiers during WW1.
Man dont give them PTSD
What confused me, ever I saw the movie and that particular scene with the barrbed eire is, that the German army use screw type barbed wire posts! It was so good due to its quiteness infact, that the Brits copied them
Why can't Hollywood producers and directors display such love for the 7th art, nowadays?
