The one thing most overlooked on small lawnmower engines is that the flywheels are lightened and basically there for cooling and timing. The blade basically becomes the flywheel. The engine you want to find is an equivalent pressure washer engine. They need weighted flywheels to have enough momentum to run correctly and smoothly. Also helps them power the pump. Not all engines have the same length crank shaft, or size even. So you may need a couple engines to end up with one with all the right features. Hopefully this illuminates some things for others. Keep tinkering alive
Also variable drive motors would've worked, too. I've been drawing up something like this for about three years now, with different setups and different types of bikes.
That third engine swap is crazy lol. Over here in the Philippines, some people buy the little 49cc engine kits for their bicycles. It's pretty affordable at around £50-70 and can get a bicycle going faster than most people would ever want.

You can easily make a hydraulic 2 speed "transmission" by just using valves to switch between "hydraulic motors in parallel" and "hydraulic motors in series". Now each motor gets half of the oil, If you use valves to deliver all oil to 1 motor and the output oil of that motor to the inlet of the second motor, both will turn twice as fast as before...
good idea, also to give it brakes all you need is to engage the bypass and have a valve to shut off flow to the motors (valve in series), so that way the hydraulic motors will then become a pump but their flow is restricted, unless the motors dont work at all as pumps it should work just fine.
But with half the power to each. As long as that is enough to push at or above that speed, you're ok, otherwise it would end up slowing down. Except for the 2WD part, it would probably be better to make it feed just one wheel/motor.
@@SuperBrainAK I think restricting the inlet of the motors will give you bad brake performance because they will cavitate which also causes a lot of wear in the motors. I think it is better to restrict the output of the motors, that way they can build up pressure and therefore they will have a very good braking performance. But I think a pressure regulator is necessary to prevent the front wheel from blocking completely, so you don't fly over the handlebars.
@@addz17 I think the power loss is because the pump is rotating too fast and it is cavitating, max rpm of hydraulic pumps is below 3000 rpm, max rpm of those lawnmower engines is often above 4000 rpm. It may be better to reduce the rpm of the pump with 2:1 reduction and to install smaller hydraulic motors, that way the oil flow rate is lower and the pressure is higher. The high flow rate causes a lot of power loss, because the oil is heating up very quickly.

I've been mulling over a 2wd minibike with big old lawn tractor tires and wheels, would love to see Colin tackle a mudder like that. An old school cyclekart using 2 mopeds for driveline and wheels, modern cyclekarts sound pathetic with predator engines and torque converters. Lastly, a hand pumped Irish mail cart/touring bike, 10 or 15 speed w/4 wheels. And a proper ride height. Eating Honda bumpers on a recombinant is tedious at best and the chavs never have proper insurance anyways. Revisit water rockets to entertain the Rugrats. The designs and launch system we use works a treat.

Colin, I think some of the nicest finds I got came from scrap yards. I bought welders, table saws, hand tools, and the like. People can be very wasteful.

I agree also bikes can go 30 mph but usually they don't have about 200 kg of extra load. A pothole could be really bad. Edit approx 75-100 kilo extra load...

1:49 Colin, If you work on a lawnmower again. Please disconnect the spark plug cap from the spark plug before removing or working on the blade. Since the blade is a direct drive to the engine. Rotating the blade can cause the lawnmower to start resulting in a rapid loss in fingers and or hands.
I loved seeing each version of the bike. You could've just left it at the Mk1 stage to meet your obligation to your sponsor but you went way further and probably paid out of pocket to make it better
The best way to make a bicycle or motorcycle 2wd is with electricity. You can independently power the wheels with a motor in each hub, and you've got all kinds of clever programming to make it a little bit more dynamic, such as a 60/40 power ratio, soft starts, all the kind of things to make such a machine behave better on loose surfaces. Electric motors also don't really care if they're running out of sync either, so you don't have to worry about one motor fighting the other.
it's a bit hard to find a electric motor on a scrap heap. If they still work they are not scrapped. When you can find them at the tip. They don't work anymore. Also to then find batteries that can power said engine on a scrap heap is nearly impossible as they are not allowed near a scrap heap.

Mower engine might have worked if a flywheel was added. Being purpose built engines, they usually rely on a heavy blade as a flywheel.

Colin, I think some of the nicest finds I got came from scrap yards. I bought welders, table saws, hand tools, and the like. People can be very wasteful.
The end result is something i can actually imagine in-game.

I agree also bikes can go 30 mph but usually they don't have about 200 kg of extra load. A pothole could be really bad. Edit approx 75-100 kilo extra load...

1:49 Colin, If you work on a lawnmower again. Please disconnect the spark plug cap from the spark plug before removing or working on the blade. Since the blade is a direct drive to the engine. Rotating the blade can cause the lawnmower to start resulting in a rapid loss in fingers and or hands.
I loved seeing each version of the bike. You could've just left it at the Mk1 stage to meet your obligation to your sponsor but you went way further and probably paid out of pocket to make it better

The best way to make a bicycle or motorcycle 2wd is with electricity. You can independently power the wheels with a motor in each hub, and you've got all kinds of clever programming to make it a little bit more dynamic, such as a 60/40 power ratio, soft starts, all the kind of things to make such a machine behave better on loose surfaces. Electric motors also don't really care if they're running out of sync either, so you don't have to worry about one motor fighting the other.
it's a bit hard to find a electric motor on a scrap heap. If they still work they are not scrapped. When you can find them at the tip. They don't work anymore. Also to then find batteries that can power said engine on a scrap heap is nearly impossible as they are not allowed near a scrap heap.
@@sirBrouwer Yeah, but the "not working" part could very from something completely trashed to an easy fix, I imagine? Although I guess electric motors of sufficient power aren't usually in hands of people who'd just throw something out without attempting a fix first
