Mr. Chris Van Vliet, I have been a wrestling fan for the majority of my life. I really honor your contributions and without being too loquacious, I want to sum up in words what you mean to all of us. You give us the opportunity to not simply admire the artform but to also meet the painter. Thank you for bringing our favorite voices from your scope of influence to our living rooms.
The Coach is underappreciated. I remember growing up watching him and not liking him lol but as I got older I went back and saw what he was willing to do for us even if it embarrassed him, which happened a lot and it made me like him more
I used to be a "give 100% no matter what you do" person. 20 years later I realize that giving 100% no matter what gets you overlooked and taken advantage of. Sure it felt good at the time to have a sense of pride about my work, but it led to burn out and killed my passion once I found out that my work ethic and drive was purposely taken advantage of. Not because I wasn't liked, but because they knew I gave 100% no matter what and it saved it them money while I got nothing but my barely above minimum wage hourly pay.
My last job I gave 110% (Christian nonprofit organization) and what they they do after 5 years? They fired me without warning. Forced me to sign a NDA within 2 weeks and said I wouldn't get severance if I did not sign it. That's the last time I go above and beyond to make the working environment a better place.
As a person who has done what you did, I learned so much. That's what was valuable at the time. Not the recognition from the company. Or my supervisors. It was the knowledge I gained. I'll share two of the most important lessons. 1. I am always 110% when a supervisor is looking. Present or in the building. The higher the position of the supervisor, the better I am. 2. If my performance will directly affect my bosses job. Or how his boss perceives THEIR performance; I exceed their expectations. (Make your boss look good to their boss) The rest of the time, I do just enough to separate myself from the rest of the workers. A couple of things happen with this behavior. Coworkers know you're the one. They either step up or get exposed. It also allows me to keep my head right. I'm not too stressed and I'm not killing myself. I still maintain my "best worker here" title for myself and for those around me. I don't complain to people that matter... that you have to learn. Because your promotion might not have happened because a coworker ran their mouth.... I make a good living in retail. Now, I'm the guy that hires and promotes people.... keeping my mouth shut around coworkers was a major reason why.
Easily one the greatest interviews on the channel! Congratulations to both gentlemen for the energy, authenticity, charisma, storytelling, insight and wisdom shared for nearly 90 minutes. Really appreciate it.
I like how historical revisionism is always a thing lol. Coach sucked, and should have never been anywhere near anything that has to do with wrestling. Be that on commentary or the ring. He should've stayed a no name interviewer like the beginning of his career.
Back in April of 2003, as a child, I attended my first Raw, in Milwaukee near where I lived, and was soooo excited. An episode of Sunday Night Heat was filmed right before, which Coach was cohosting at the time with Lita. I was probably annoying, because I kept waving at them…I was just thrilled to be there after wanting to attend Raw for over a year! Anyway, Coach *repeatedly* smiled/waved back at me. That was my first experience with a famous person and Coach was one of my favorites on WWE, so it really meant a lot to me! If you see this Coach, I was just a random young girl at a show 20 years ago, but what you did for me meant a lot to me as a child (thank you so much).
The pay check likely didn't bounce its more likely he held on to it for too long and then needed a reprint but they were already filing for bankruptcy. He clearly thought Vince should have paid him out of pocket or from the WWE's payroll just because they were friends even though he was an XFL employee.
@@allmightylowercasejay1138 The company going bankrupt definitely is a better justification. If you're working for a company that's clearly on the verge of going bankrupt you need to run to the bank as soon as you get your check.
@@allmightylowercasejay1138more likely Vince pulled the rug from all employees by stiffing them on the pay by issuing checks knowing full well they wouldn't be honoured. When a billionaire pretends he's broke, you know they are scum.
I will admit. I never was the biggest coach fan. But after seeing this. And seeing how and who he is, I have a lot of respect for him. And alot of what he has said has hit me in a good way. Made me see some things I do in a different light
I’m one of those people who only knew him as the Coach from WWE. Like he said, I don’t really watch any other sport. This was amazing. Such a great interview. As a wrestling fan, I used to despise the Coach (which is proof that he was good at his job) so I came into this with low expectations but this was really a great surprise. Looking forward to the next Jonathan Coachman interview now !
Coach is the man. As a guy who has wanted to be in broadcasting my whole life, coach is the only guy I could look at who did both wrestling and sports at the highest level. A true hero of mine.
Benoit was an absolute tragedy, I grew up just a couple blocks away from his parents and when I was a kid somewhere around 9 or 10 when Chris was still with Stampede Wrestling we walked by while they were hosting a bbq with a bunch of the guys. Of course we fanboid but they didn’t shun us, instead they asked us to stay for some dinner…for the next couple hours I got to talk to some of my biggest hero’s in a completely casual setting and they made us feel like we were part of the family. To this day, I legit tear up when I see anything about how it all ended, because it just didn’t make any sense for the guy I knew who had a huge heart and was more than giving, family and friends were everything to him.
Man you are so lucky. I never me Chris but I idolized him so much and when he passed away I cried and to this day I cry even more knowing this couldnt be Chris I saw on tv, Chris the wrestler I wanna be and to this day I remember myself on him every day. Because I wanted to be like him but when he passed away my love for wrestling died. I do watch but its not the same knowing he isnt around anymore not in ring but just in generally alive. I dont wanna believe and still to this day I keep saying it wasnt him who did it and I'll die saying it wasnt him who killed Nancy & Daniel before taking his own life. I hope family has its peace now and I hope long life for remaning Benoits from his father & mom to his sister & kids from first marriage.
I love that this dude started off as a wrestling fan and became the interviewer people want instead of having to look for people! Love your work Chris! Sucks that they burnt coach bad, he was one of my faves
Coach is definitely one of my favorite people. Inside wrestling, he was fun to watch. Outside, he's fun to experience. And they're two very different feelings for me.
This was another excellent conversation Chris. You have made a reputation of trust, letting others feel comfortable with you. It shows. Your interviews are enlightening and show so much more than the business. Thank you for your show. Keep up the great work.
In the mid 2000s I couldn’t stand you, which means you were fantastic at doing what you were supposed to do. This is the first time I’ve heard from you since the WWE days and honestly, you’ve become one of my favourite people coach. Thank you for everything you did in WWE during my youth, and thank you for everything you do still even if I don’t see it.
The Coach is absolutely the man. Fantastic interview you've conducted, Chris, as always. Coach is fascinating to listen to recounting his illustrious career as one of the most successful men to ever participate in any capacity of professional wrestling. I appreciate Coach's dedication to his craft and performing for us for so many years some of the most memorable moments in WWE history. Thank you, Coach, for everything you gave to us wrestling fans and stil continue to give to this day.
Thanks for a great Interview! Looking at how eloquent and passionate he is in this interview, it really makes me sad how badly WWE treated him. And in spite of everything, he still manages to juggle being honest with being tactful in his replies. There's a lot of hurt, but he's not bitter about it, even as he's learnt to protect himself.
CVV! This was one of the best. VERY inspirational to any hosts, broadcasters, podcasters, or emcees from The Coach. I remember feeling it when Coach was gonna turn heel and then one day WHAM a chairshot to the back of Shane-O Mac from someone juuuuust off camera. Pan out...and it's THE COACH! I loved it so much.
It’s great to see him in a good place, and I’m glad he didn’t let the tough moments he had in WWE keep him from obtaining success outside of pro wrestling.
He is right about the fans and their obsession with the dirt sheets. I’ve heard people be mad about stuff that’s good because the sheets had them thinking that something else was supposed to happen. Even if that idea was never in consideration people will compare it to what they thought should happen. You wouldn’t enjoy a movie or a show that way what makes you think it’s different for wrestling
So true, i hate this dirt sheet smart fan era of wrestling. Sure there were always smart fans that knew the ins and outs but that was a small percentage. Now everyone know storylines weeks in advance, returns, departures etc
Coach! God I miss him on WWE tv. Just sitting down to watch this now. He was a very entertaining character and I wish him all the best with whatever he tackles nowadays
Thankyou CVV so much for this great interview. Coach was so involved in my childhood love of wrestling, never knew anything about him personally until today! Loved the interview.
This has to be one of the most interesting interviews ever of someone who's been there for at least two decades and then got no respect. That's sad. being from New York It was kind of strange seeing how quickly he went from being on MSG late night to ESPN and I think it only lasted like a month. Good for him. Jonathan Coachman you're the man!❤
I’m 7 minutes in and this is already an amazing interview I can tell. Coach is well spoken and entertaining to listen to. Maybe his voice also gives me childhood nostalgia

Marvelous interview. I said I will listen to this for 1o minutes while I do the dishes and go to bed. Man, I watch the whole things straight through. So much wisdom. Bigger fan of Coach than before. Thanks Chris.
Amazing interview. Been a while since I could watch one in its entirety and this one just hit the spot. Hope you and The Coach make more magic together down the road. 🙏🏾🙏🏾
If there’s ever a time where Chris doesn’t mention that he was there when WM18 gets brought up, I’ll be disappointed. That’s one of my favorite staples of this channel. Great interview as always, I could listen to Coach for hours.
As a kid, Coach was somebody I genuinely enjoying whenever he would be doing interviews, or building. He was extremely funny, and he played the heel role so well. I really appreciate this interview man and thank God for Peacock. Reliving moments in the attitude era that I was too young to remember, and moments in Ruthless aggression that I may have forgotten. Chris, you asked some great questions man. Could tell Coach really enjoyed sitting with you. Also, you provided great POV’s to what the WWE is missing today.
Great interview, Coach really can weave a good tale. My biggest take away from this is that i hope at some point in my life i love myself as much as Coach loves himself. I mean that in the best way. He has a lot of self confidence and it's well earned. Hope his son has great success in golf as well.
I watched WWE when dude started. I haven't seen the show for years but I'm glad he got away from the schedule of WWE and actually have some what of a normal life.
1:10:41 is where the attorneys litigating against Vince have a real huge gold nugget. Coachman got beat up for saying no to the boss to travel to the Middle East while his wife was pregnant by Taker and Batista…. Taker even apologized while beating Coach up….Wow.
I always hated coach growing up but he was doing exactly what he was paid to do and that was to make me hate him lol listening to him now even a few years removed from his last stint in wrestling you really can see that he hates it ended the way it did. He is so well spoken and like you said in the interview a great storyteller. Respect to The Coach 🤘
This interview was awesome, coach has always been a good talker. I’ll never forget when the first take guys was on vacation and he filled in one day and he did great. I knew it was behind the scenes politics going on when he never went there again.
This interview was amazing! The Coach always made me laugh on television during his time on the WWE. I can relate on how staying motivated to do the job you love vs the job you hate but have to do for money. This was a great interview and so motivating to hear today. Keep up the good work to the both of you.
I think that Jonathan Coachman got it confused to this day, but the Ying Yang Twins never made his theme song, it was a rapper named "Homebwoi" and he simply name dropped the Ying Yang Twins in the song. Not that it really matters but i've heard him say this a couple times ! great interview as always !
Honestly I was more proud than anything when I first saw Coach on ESPN. I know there is a weird tribalism with leaving pro wrestling, but Coach really made the most of it all and he’ll always have my respect.
Yeah I've always hated the stigma that if you're not in WWE you fell off and broke now but Coachman really was a treasure to watch back in the day good to see his son is gonna be a future prodigy.
Probably one of the best interviews I've seen on your channel. I wish more guest had the energy The Coach bought to your interview. Excellent job to you both
Excellent interview by Chris, and Coach is a great interview subject. Indeed he's a great storyteller. I think the Coach was underrated during his time in the WWE. He was very versatile and would do anything to entertain us, even if it was to make us hate him. He played his character so well.
At Summerslam 2004 in Toronto, me and a friend saw Coach doing an “interview”… my buddy yelled to Coach “ Hey Coach! I hate you!” …. He stopped the interview, looked right at my friend and said “ I hate you too, idiot” … he was 100% in character and we all laughed our asses off. Good sport, Great guy
I've been waiting for The Coach. Gonna listen to this while I drive my semi tractor trailer down the highways and byways. Got my load from Indianapolis going to Holland, Michigan. Just gotta stop at a truck stop to buy some vittles.

no he wasn’t 😂 he was literally the worst part about this era of wrestling.
I love the Coach. He's been living the dream for years doing everything. Great guy.
18:22 this mentality is why Vince always took a liking to Coach I bet
It was great to see this man on tv.. Sad that we don't see him on it anymore but happy that he did well for himself .
Marvelous interview. I said I will listen to this for 1o minutes while I do the dishes and go to bed. Man, I watch the whole things straight through.
So much wisdom. Bigger fan of Coach than before.
Thanks Chris.
What a great guy coach is, and man he brings energy in this interview. Very genuine and authentic!
Great get Christ 🔥
Chris, this was one of your best interviews. Thank you and the Coach for a free masterclass session!
GREAT interview with the coach CVV!!!! love the Coach’s FACTS on what really goes on in the wrestling word behind the scene….

Chris Van Vliet underated never duplicated but always and forever will be appreciated.
One of your Best interviews. Nothing but love for The Coach. 🐻👊
I can't believe I watched this whole thing. Coach is amazing and so knowledgeable. Huge thanks for taking the time to do this.
1:10:41 is where the attorneys litigating against Vince have a real huge gold nugget. Coachman got beat up for saying no to the boss to travel to the Middle East while his wife was pregnant by Taker and Batista…. Taker even apologized while beating Coach up….Wow.
CVV one of the best to ever do it. Great interview and Coach was an amazing guest. Conversation flowed, one of your best yet.

Watched the whole interview. This had to be the best interview to date and Coach was the best guest so far.
The coach is a real 1 for shining light on Benoit's name..forever a legend!
This interview was awesome, coach has always been a good talker. I’ll never forget when the first take guys was on vacation and he filled in one day and he did great. I knew it was behind the scenes politics going on when he never went there again.
Great episode! Thank you for booking The Coach.
This interview was amazing! The Coach always made me laugh on television during his time on the WWE. I can relate on how staying motivated to do the job you love vs the job you hate but have to do for money.
This was a great interview and so motivating to hear today. Keep up the good work to the both of you.
This was such a great interview!
Please continue to have The Coach on your show more often! Love his stories!
Chris and Coach talking shop about being media dudes is my favorite thing I’ve ever seen on this channel.
Jonathan is well spoken and knowledgeable of the wrestling business.
this was one of your best episodes. Please bring him back often
What an enjoyable chat! Appreciate this
!
Thank you both for the interview.
One of the best interviews I've seen in years. Such an engaging guy. I'm so glad he is doing so well
Coach crawled so McAfee could walk. Loved watching Coach back in the day
Coach is doing the right thing. I wouldn't return to a company that mistreats me ever either.
Thank you for this video really learn a lot coach is one of my favorite WWE characters 💯
Absolutely Incredible Interview Chris! Watched every minute. Coach is such a Legend!
Honestly I was more proud than anything when I first saw Coach on ESPN. I know there is a weird tribalism with leaving pro wrestling, but Coach really made the most of it all and he’ll always have my respect.
Fantastic interview, again! Also for those looking to get into any sort of business, this is a must-watch. All those little details add up.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah I've always hated the stigma that if you're not in WWE you fell off and broke now but Coachman really was a treasure to watch back in the day good to see his son is gonna be a future prodigy.
One of the best interviews on your channel CVV!
Probably one of the best interviews I've seen on your channel. I wish more guest had the energy The Coach bought to your interview. Excellent job to you both
Absolutely loved this show Chris ive been motivated and inspired by the Coach.
One of my favorite interviews you’ve done! Great job! 💯
You guys have good chemistry, hopefully Coach becomes a recurring guest!
Excellent interview by Chris, and Coach is a great interview subject. Indeed he's a great storyteller. I think the Coach was underrated during his time in the WWE. He was very versatile and would do anything to entertain us, even if it was to make us hate him. He played his character so well.
I’ve not seen many but this was my favourite CVV interview. Loved it. Coach is a class act.
Chris if you’re reading this I just wanted to tell you that I love what you do. I love how much I have learned from you and the people you have interviewed. Hell I learned a lot from this one alone. Thank you. Keep up the good and inspirational work.❤
