      I assume if you were to measure your water flow and mathematicaly scale it down. That could give you an idea where your currents are building and causing erosion would the water behave the same or would you see a much different outcome with a larger level of water. Obviously it would erode quicker but when scaling the dam up too your scaling the time that damage takes right?

    • @sixstringedthing
      @sixstringedthing Год назад +3

      @@swoopydoopy4851 The short and somewhat unsatisfying answer to the question of whether the rate of erosion scales with the size of the dam is "it depends on a bunch of geological and design factors". However, the engineering challenges associated with hydrodynamic effects such as erosion of spillways and undercutting of dam walls over time are basically solved problems at the civil project scale, although it's a pretty complex and specialised field of study. Search "computational fluid dynamics" to learn more about how these problems are modeled at scale. Obviously this guy is building these miniature projects for fun and educational purposes on a temporary basis, so he's probably not too concerned about the long-term effects of restricted/accelerated water flows.

    I'd like to see some of your dams after a few years. Maybe you can make such a video showing the erosion occurred over those years. If you have build on top of soft soil, I'd also like to see how that looks, since the big dams need to implement strategies to keep the water away from the base of the dam.

    It would be nice to see the end result of what it can generate electrocity wise. If it for example powers lights in a nearby house or school or something

    • @raembes
      @raembes 9 месяцев назад +3

      Normal light bulbs would probably already be a problem to power, even at half the brightness. But 1-2 high effiency LED lamps which can light a small room should work. It is just an estimation, as there are several other factors which have to be taken into account. As the dam is rather tiny and the water flow isn't much, the relatively small turbine can't rotate very fast. Simply said the force of the water which hits the turbine is not very high. If the trench and dam would be twice as deep and tall, the power generation would be way more than double that amount. Of course you would then need a sufficent water flow aswell.
      But a power generation measurement tool would be very cool to see indeed.

    You should try using Pelton Wheels / Pelton turbines, and make a dam of some kind that is based around those turbines. Also maybe instead of making just dams you could make other infrastructure like water treatment plants and maybe even mini plastic pyrolysis factories (they turn plastic into fuel) and use the fuel the factory makes to power a mini generator/engine

      i take these as being a bit of fun between rice harvests. plenty of water, irrigation canals, flat land...
      flat land doesnt work well with peltons.
      as much as i like them.
      low head, they want fully submerged turbines... francis and the like. pressure turbines.
      the turbine is where these guys are letting themselves down. a few paddles stuck to a rod isnt exactly efficient at converting that potential energy.
      what little there is.
      quick calc... assume 20L/sec, 1M fall... 200 joules, and every second, for 200W. at best, get 50% of that... the ideal turbine slows the water velocity to half (just like a pelton is best spun at half the water velocity) to extract the most power. their idea of a "turbine" just isnt up to the task.
      100W. perfect turbine, perfect generator... lol. 70W at best. better than nothing.
      constant. steady.
      these guys are lucky to make 1/2W...
      i'd kill to have this sort of flow through my place. even if its only over a few meters of fall.

    That is really cool but hold on... you went through all that effort and then secured your turbine blades to the shaft with hot glue? I find hot glue to be unreliable even with light crafting projects. That hardly seems like something that will last long.

      @@rildain76 if you look at the walls of the little trench he's in , you'll see marks from other dam builds you've watched. He's standing on a concrete pad he made to do this dam good work. You can see it in other videos as well. Stuff is cool , but it's built then broken down and rebuilt into something else. I'ma keep watching. Try muting it and have Left Bank 2 looping quietly in the background.
