Damn, I almost forgot abotCarmel!! That's one underrated singer for sure, and shouldnt be. I still have the "cassette " of this, along with a host of old 80s groups some gone, but never forgotten. Great music never goes away.
I was 16 when this came out i was into everything not least this she is under rated without a doubt many have followed down the line with the style with less talent and drive and became huge with carmel it is more sung from the heart.
From the 50s to the early 90s the UK was so incredibly creative musically, it never ceases to amaze me whenever I discover one of these long-forgotten gems. so glad spent some of my best years growing up then.
My God, she's amazing. The Melody reminds me of James Brown's "It's A Man's World" and her Musicians give me the impression that they studied Motown's Funk Brothers.
i remember buying 12" single and playing with the arm of old record player turned so it would repeat over and over and over again and it still sounds as good if not better today
Saw her in the 80s at the lesser Free Trade Hall Manchester such a powerful performance that's still etched in my brain. I had the same thoughts when I heard Duffy & Adele haven't these people heard of Carmel. She should be given the respect she deserves at least a Brits for her contribution to music. On a tangent there's a girl called Emma Blackery who's posted a song on RUclips about the same subject as Bad Day as a comfort to those who are experiencing difficulties with life.
I always loved Carmel!❤️🔥Since her first album! This song is among my favorites! The later I‘m not afraid of you came out when I did!😂🌈 I‘m backtracking now,Thx!🦋
Kinda makes you sick that Madonna has been constantly in the charts since this came out, and consistently sells millions of records, While people who actually can sing like Sam Brown and Carmel never got the recognition they deserved.
I've noticed a lot of comments about comparing this band to Madonna. I actually didn't realize I had heard her before on the soundtrack of "She's Having A Baby'..that's all I heard before, and didn't even know it was them. It is kinda pathetic cuz she's got a pretty unique vocal style. I feel ya. They did a lot of videos and must have put out a number of works. Pretty impressive regardless of level of 'worldwide fame'...
Loved Carmel from the start - have all her albums/CDs - her first two albums + debut EP are amazing, and the later ones aren't bad either - more people should know her talent/work - a very underrated singer!
In my line of work i come across many singers and from a young child of 7yrs old i was brought up around singers and bands and i have only found one female singer Carmel whom has ever taken my breath away with her music and voice and this is Amy Winehouse, well that was up to now as you are outstanding young lady, you really are amazing, love this song and It's All In The Game. It was Tony Rowe whom told me about you. Hope to chat soon Carmel xx
Depression at 17! Never realised. Looking back, this lady and her music helped me channel out a weird creativity - poetry, which I hid. She was a tonic and made me connect with myself. Thank you for posting this GEM!
Was lucky enough to see Carmel at Ronnie Scott's in London around the time of this release. Are they still preforming I wonder? Very distinctive voice. Sublime.
I take quite a bit of tablets - not looking for a Jeremy Kyle lecture btw. I was in my teens, mum was on pills, I had a shitty childhood, imagine the most horrible. Then I heard this tune, and loved it. 44 now, head still messed. But, I get comfort from this tune, She promised me 'Hope' that will happen. She is a top bird! x cheers lass x
@@popehadrianthe4th - it will be what brought me to it. Memories if fantastic vocals, brilliant arrangement and happy memories of the 80's when music was king. Anything that was not mainstream I seemed to suck up! Rather than play discs or CD's RUclips and Amazon Music are my Jukeboxes of choice. Really inspired, happy and loving your comment. I still feel the same today about Carmel's vocals. My 'paper round' wage never let me to chase music I was into. Apart from The Smiths, Everything But The Girl but majorly was The Cocteau Twins. £3.30 every Saturday, I queued outside my local Woolworths, before opening time. There was usually one copy on 45 rpm vinyl that differed from the usual Stock Aitken & Waterman & i had to be there to buy it. Happy memories. Once again thank you for your comment - nothing like a jolt to bring music memories back. Happy New Years to you friend.
@@idavo the Cocteau Twins, oh wow, I did that ten album challenge last year and I think 6 of my choices were the Cocteau’s, Victorialand no 1. Good new year to you as well pal and here’s to more random thoughts bringing us to amazing nice places !
Great! Also for the way she looks, the skipants we wore at that time, I almost forgot about them! Carmel is the best. I wanted be like her when I was 18.
thanks so much for posting. bought the extended version of this on 12" vinyl when it originally came out. had never heard it, but was intrigued when i saw that steve nieve (from elvis costello and the attractions) plaed the keyboards. the song blew me away at first listen. i'll be fifty this summer and this song sounds as great and fresh as ever. great song to play when you're in a funk. all boils down to the last line to me, " i'm giving you hope".
I do my father bought me a Sony walkman and I had Carmel on tape .I'm really surprised that people still listen to Carmel. I loved sam brown aswell .its so nistalgic
if you think this is good, wait till you hear the b-side of the original 12", it's called, "Rue St. Denis"; i can't locate the record in my collection, but i know it's here somewhere because i played it - about two years ago - to someone who had not heard of carmel, and they - like everyone i've introduced it to down the years - were blown away by it's seedy yet majestic power, if anyone knows where this criminally neglected masterpiece can be downloaded from, PLEASE let me know
Yeah yeah, I've played the b side in clubs and it always has ppl wanting to know what the tune us. Blows them away when they get told its a 1983 b side. The did a good job beefing up the flip from the album version.
Hearing Duffy (in tv, not looking) reminded me of Carmel. Then my old record player (still have it) found something to do. Then I realised: search for Carmel. And I found a lot. A lot. And it made meeee soooo haaaaapppyyyyy. Tänks duffi.
That's my girlfriend there, singing. Really. I've lived with and loved that woman for nearly 15 years. No, not Carmel. Helen Watson - she's one of the backing singers. The one on the right. She's my girl. And she's as good now as she was then. In fact she's singing tonight. Performing in the ballroom at the end of the pier in Cromer. I'm just putting this here for posterity.
A hoo, hoo, a hoo, hoo, a hoo, hoo, a hoo, hoo Ba ba ber dun ba ba, ber dun ba ba, ber dun ba ba Bad day, bad day Bad day when you wake up and you find out your dreams flown away, Don’t run away now, don't be afraid be strong yeah, be strong now ....kαι τι φωναρα !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good God.....my parents and siblings hated me at the time the LP came out. I drove em crazy cuz I sang along the "aahoos" all day. Never had finer "bad days".......ahoo..hoo...
@Antzzz247 Yes,I agree with the Alicia Keys and Fallin' connection,Antzzz247.And what about the excellent Lana Del Rey lifting some of Carmel's style and sound? which in turn harks back to black american torch singers of the 50's,40's and 30's?
i can remember so well ; my friends told me there is a new singer , a black woman , with a band them call them self carmel they heard in the radio ! ! 😆 they where kinda shocked when they learned she wasnt ( ISN'T ) !
Who's still listening to this gem in 2020? 🖖✌️🤟
Tune that sticks
Me too
Me:)
I am. Still have it on vinyl.
Me!

Still listening in 2023...good songs are timeless!
Since hearing this song in 1983 it’s still haunting and fantastic
Haven't heard this in years! Forgotten how good it really was and how unusual her voice was!
I raved about her back in the day so I'm loving this
This is a gem from 1983. Loved it then, still love it today in 2021
They're having an 80s day on BBC Radio 6 today, and this popped up.
I don't think I've heard it for decades; I knew all the words! Had the single.
Wow ! What a peach ! And what a voice , incredible
I was 16 when this came out i was into everything not least this she is under rated without a doubt many have followed down the line with the style with less talent and drive and became huge with carmel it is more sung from the heart.
Bought this on vinyl way back when, what a classic!
I always loved that song for bringing tears to my eyes!
Still have the Vinyl Album!
Thanx🍀
Oh yes sat in Brighton tryna sing this to my girlfriend on our 25th..absolute buss up tune.♡♡♡
I saw her perform this live at Ronnie Scott's in 1983. She was AMAZING!!
Loved it then and love it now 👍👍
Who else is listening to this one in 2019? I remember this gem. Under-rated and under-appreciated, rare song.
Still listening all albums. Great voice. Still sounding if it was recorded only yesterday. Timeless!
In 2020 too! Classic voice
heard it in a movie a few years ago. fell in love immediately....
Harry S. Anchan listening in 2020 lockdown bought the EP. Priceless 👍 what a voice 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Stumbled upon this. Carmel reminds of Madonna in her very early years. That look. Good tune.
Saw her live in 83. She was class.
Completely puts Duffy and the like to shame... the best female voice EVER!!! She was out of this world live!
i bought this when it was first released and what an under rated singer, just fantastic.xxx
Very underrated. And a bit unique
From the 50s to the early 90s the UK was so incredibly creative musically, it never ceases to amaze me whenever I discover one of these long-forgotten gems. so glad spent some of my best years growing up then.
I second that. Even in Germany we so much lived off British indie music, whatever genre
My God, she's amazing. The Melody reminds me of James Brown's "It's A Man's World" and her Musicians give me the impression that they studied Motown's Funk Brothers.
I was 20 and all about that look...bloody hell where has the 37 yrs gone 😢😢😢
i remember buying 12" single and playing with the arm of old record player turned so it would repeat over and over and over again and it still sounds as good if not better today
In the 80's there was already this wonderful voice. Very great!!!

Duffy is similar. adele hasn't a patch on Carmel
I saw her in the Pardiso in Amsterdam 80's, she gave a 30minute encore...awesome amtmosphere...
Zeker een geweldig concert. Ze zong de laatste noten onversterkt. Prachtig.
so good went into the loft and dug out the 12" vinyl and drifted back to happier times superb voice saw her live in hannover in '88
I bought this when I was only 17! My God, it has to be said I have impeccable taste in music.
Fantastic voice, brings back good memories.

Still one of my all time favorites
only god knows how much I loved this great singer!
Siempre a tu lado Carmel !!!
This soothes my sole. I heard this, and listened to carmel in concert, many many years ago, A delight
One of my most beloves 45'' singles of the '80's
Kinda makes you sick that Madonna has been constantly in the charts since this came out, and consistently sells millions of records, While people who actually can sing like Sam Brown and Carmel never got the recognition they deserved.
yeah, but Madonna will get her baps out to sell records, besides, just when did Joe Public ever truly realise quality?

Just brilliant......
Have loved Carmel and her voice since this song, early 80's.
Love it! Can't wait to see Carmel on the EU tour in May, got my tix for already!
Hugely underrated talent. Saw her live and they made a couple of really good albums. Where is she now?

In every generation since the dot, there has been good music and there has been bad music, this is good music.
Great song. Great memories of 1983. I used to have the 6 minute long version on Napster. Anyone off here got that?
I do my father bought me a Sony walkman and I had Carmel on tape .I'm really surprised that people still listen to Carmel. I loved sam brown aswell .its so nistalgic

Does anyone else hear where Alicia Keys got her inspiration for Fallin'?
It's clear. Perhaps a song her parents would play when she was a child.
