You guys have a lot of balls to take it out on a canoe during your test days, respect!
It was a challenge to shoot with on such a small boat haha thanks for watching, Jake
Evryone knows, .... CVP has the BIGGEST BALLS of anyone.
Well, it was a loaner, so if it falls in... Sorry!!
Try that in a keel-less canoe😮
the BURANO floats. @@doveseye.4666
This is the camera I dreamed of ever since I first started shooting on Sony. The versatility, the loads of practical physical and internal components, the mounting and codec options…at 8k. Outstanding
Agreed. This camera is wonderful.
Not including false color seems very out of touch with how young cinematographers are exposing their images. It is the number one tool used for accurate and fast exposing.
Fingers crossed this is something they can add in firmware! Thanks for watching, Jake
I’d say a lot of old cinematographers use false color as well.
False colour is a standard, doesn’t matter what era.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Your videos are the most professional, comprehensive on RUclips.
Thanks for watching! Jake
What a turnaround from Sony during these last 3-4 years.
This is the most complete camera line ever made. Proud FX6 owner here.
proud A7s, a6300, Fx30 owner
Proud of being color blind and never having enough internal NDs? :)

"How mediocre can you be? Proud... you're the ten millionth, now even dogs and pigs have Sony. From the old amateur to the village filmmaker who films village parties. And you're proud of it
@@serghios People that call others mediocre, have no interest for me. Have a great day
Thanks Jake and CVP crew for the fantastic overview!
Awesome job jake and team. Please release some showreel !. Love the colours. More authentic and realistic than ever before
I love your in-depth reviews guys ! keep it going :)
Very comprehensive review ! Love it guys . Raptor has a serious contender now
Dream camera. Here's to hoping that some of these amazing features trickle down to the next iteration of the FX lineup!
So many great realeses today! 🤓 Burano really looks like my dream camera
Excellent. Best and most comprehensive review channel on YT.
Thanks for watching! Jake
The Burano is a welcomed camera. I've stayed away from Sony Cameras for a number of years now but this camera brings the Sony image back to the top of the image game! Lots to love here!
I used to shoot with low band Sony video cameras in the 1980s and then hiband and later with Sony digital videocameras. Sony was a mastodont back then and Sony camcorders were incredibly expensive.
What a good launch and what a good product. With this article, many independent producers or those who are just starting out can obtain a product of excellent quality and at a lower price.
SONY gentlemen EXCELLENT!!!
A stabilised full frame sensor and built in ND. I think that's a combo first
I was thinking the same thing. Add in the best possible autofocus in a camera and you have unbelievable tools at your disposal
@@Chuckyfunk504Autofocus has no soul, no punch. I never understood the younger generations love for autofocus other than narcissist self filming/ only being semi sarcastic but I’ve never used autofocus in my work for Nat Geo, NFL Films, MNF, National Food Commercials, etc, etc over 25 years.
@@RUclips_can_ESADdude it's a tool. Use it or don't. Don't be sore because you did not have it. Refusing to use it because you think it's virtuous is stupid. There's plenty of situations where it's invaluable...so stop it with the get off my lawn energy it's not a good look
@@RUclips_can_ESAD Understandable. Not saying everyone needs it, you can simply turn it off. But it’s there as an extra tool in your tool belt. It’s come a very long way from being a gimmick and has serious professional use cases. I probably have half the career you do under my belt so you may know more than me, but it seems like having an abundance of tools at your disposal (which you don’t have to use) is still an attractive thing in a camera.
Don’t he say it’s not full frame with IBis
Finally the variable ND and IBIS together 👍
amazing as always!
Let us know what you think of the Sony BURANO down below! EDIT - The graphic at 13:05 says tiny but is supposed to say Tint!
When the Venice 2 came out, I made a comment on the CVP post about how disappointed I was when it lacked the game changing Electronic Variable ND filters, mainstream media cards, 8k slow motion at 75fps and Sony's excellent auto focus. This is the camera I was actually looking for. From price point, features and body shape, it's the perfect camera for Cinema and Documentary work.
The motion picture landscape has evolved to such a point that a camera must be capable of being modified to fit any job at hand. Be it a full crew or a solo shooter. The same camera needs to work for whatever job it's being used for.
Seems like it will be a limited market. Neither one nor the other - has the market asked for this?
@@willmakesvids Trust me. The market is there for this camera. I am a camera operator on a TV show. We use the Fx6 with Atomos for RAW. The 4K on the Fx6 is good but not enough when you want to crop in post as footage is submitted in 4K. The Prores RAW is okay, but its better when done Internal.
So, they built a Nikon Z9 with an ND filter, for five times the price...
Are you a filmmaker? whats yoiur site?
Excellent breakdown and tests CVP, your coverage is superior to the others I've watched today shot at the release event. In today's episodic/documentary/corporate production environment of doing more with less, it'll be interesting to see how the market responds to a camera in this price range. I give Sony props for AF, VND, IBIS and E-Mount on a camera like this, that is unprecedented, well done and for what the camera delivers spec-wise, it seems like a good value, I just don't know if people will drop $30k with accessories on a camera that isn't really designed for features/narrative/crewed production. Time will tell.
I give Sony a "What were you thinking?" on the EVF mess and the lack of open gate. Third party solutions from Zacuto or others will mitigate the terrible monitor/EVF setup, to a point but when we can buy a $2,000 Lumix S5 II X or a $2,500 XH-2S with 6.2k open gate, there is no excuse for not including it on this camera.
That looks amazing :-) Can't wait to buy this camera
By far the best gear channel out there!
Thanks for watching! Jake
I was just talking to someone about when Sony will come out with a "Mini Venice" and this is exactly it. Having shot a lot on Venice, 6k is more then enough for most projects. S35 mode allows for higher framerates and use of your vintage glass. Plus, it works with standard 12v batteries that are easily accessible.
My gripes as an AC are that the viewfinder is trash, and I'll miss the screens on the side of the camera. Even an express screen like the A35 on the assistant side would have been nice. Not much real estate to mount things like Teradek's/ MDR's on, but a plate can fix that soon hopefully.
All-in-all, a very impressive camera, with tons of options!
I'll be purchasing this camera immediately in my dreams.
love your reviews!
informative video thanks CVP.
NICE!!! I also had the camera only for a short time but grading an entire project made me fall in love with it! I suspect a firmware update with the production models might have some improvements but overall I really really dig it!
Got any test footage for us to play with?
Burano... sounds like something you should eat
Is a small island in Venice, next of Murano, I live quite close
For a second I read burrito😂😂😂
The Sony Burrata 🧀
@houstondragna7423 say cheese!
Buranesi are actually very typical biscuits from the little island of Burano
I guess they didn’t use the Murano name as that’s can by tricky due to the glass making over there holding the Murano Glass trade mark
Fantastic review as always. And yes... I do want one! ha
Damn, you guys have been busy lately with all these reviews, 👌👌
What a perfect camera! Thank you for such a comprehensive review so early!
I hope they won't have any stock issues as they had with FX6. I'm really looking forward to buy it as soon it become available for purchase.
I wanted to ask you in which format did you shoot 8k when you tested rolling shutter performance at 13:40? Was it RAW X-OCN or h.265?
Because it looks like it has ±8 ms rolling shutter, when Venice 2 has ±3 ms which is in line with Sony 1 in photo mode.
There's an argument that RAW uses much less processing power that's why it can output video with such low rolling shutter.
I wonder perhaps it becomes higher if you start shooting in h.265.
Thank you!
Great video, i love it. Plus I think the BURANO is a perfect camera for its target market. also for the fact that for a cinema camera that has RAW functionality it also has AF its mind blowing. plus pro audio inputs on the body IBIS, its a dream
It’ll be hard to choose any other camera in this price range. This thing looks so good. I wish it was shipping this year.
Battery plate looks to be potentially swappable, would love to see a b-mount plate to make use of some Bebop or Switt bi-voltage batteries.
Great breakdown! Very thorough, thanks.
Hello?
Today is Thursday.
Korea/Seoul is clear after yesterday's rain.
I hope you have good health and positive experiences throughout the remaining week.
And I always support your beautiful/charming activities.
Promising camera that I’m sure will be useful for many types of professional projects. It reminds me of an FX6 in terms of form factor. Hopefully they will update the camera with an open gate option for anamorphic filming.
But the sensor is physically 17:9 i think ... so 3:2 in crop modes only (does not matter that much).
@@JoATTech It is not, it's a 3:2 sensor.
@@geoffreybassett6741 Ok, that's good news, I though it's like FX6 17:9.
But still, the price a little to steep for me :D.
Anyway I would like to have this 3:2 for cinemascope 2.4:1 with 1.6x lenses. And generally more flexibility with different squeeze ratios.
Great review overall. Agree they need to make an eye cup viewfinder for the camera specifically
Though it is difficult to mount, this loupe looks so much robust than the one available for the FX cameras. Partly because of the solid mount. It is probably not possible but would be nice to see if we can mount this loupe (/monitor) on the FX6 since it uses the same connector.
Simply amazing cinema camera. 👏🏽
i wonder if we 'll get a black magic pocket with ibis
Great review as always guys! How long is the LCD's cable? Will the extension cable you've designed for the FX6 work with it?
Would you rather have this or a used Venice 1?
Did you use a polarizer on your outdoor test footage? If so, did you notice any of the discoloration issues that have plagued previous Sony e-ND cameras?
CF Express Type B is so interesting.
Sony should have went with that standard for the FX6 and the other mirrorless cameras.
Interesting about the viewfinder design. I can see that it may look like a mistake to have a mirror in the loupe with all the rigging issues but it's a good move. I can say from experience that a loupe that doesn't have a mirror will eventually burn a hole (via sunlight) into your LCD. The mirror seems to take out most of the energy from the sun.
Thank you!
Thank you for putting together such a thorough review. Two questions: Do you think higher frame rates will be in the production model? 6k 120? Even FF 4k 120? Also, if shooting in X-OCN is it still advised to over expose the image as in S-Log3? Thanks in advance.
the angelbird and lexar cards you used, were they capable of shooting XOCN LT at 8k? Or did you just use them with the XAVC?
Hi! As always great work guys!
I was wonder, how about setting the Burano on a Dji RS3 Pro, will it work? Yes considering a "normal" lens not heavy lens.
Thanks, cheers!
great job guys
Absolutely love this camera. A tiny thing... I'd miss physical ISO/Gain and White Balance A/B switches on the body.
At the moment, Sony's high end cameras are out of reach for my budget. But, if I were to consider one, the Burano looks like an excellent choice. It's good to see a cinema line camera with AF and AI technology. Along with the internal/Auto ND's as well. Great overview as usual.
I just like to dream about old cinema cameras in 10 years... because by then Burano might be one of the more affordable ones🥹
@@SteffenMiethke Very true. Good to keep in mind. 😀
Looks nice but also looks to have a lot of the usual Sony cine frustrations:
- Weird limitations on 24.000P
- Nothing taller than 16:9 (even in crop modes) despite using a 3:2 sensor
- Outdated or cheap accessory design choices that are out of place on a £21K+ CineAlta camera
- And of course, the jumbled menus & missing firmware features.
It's really frustrating how determined Sony are to make a great camera and immediately shoot themselves in the foot. As an FX6 owner/op, the Burano just looks to be a more expensive way of getting the same frustration (even though I really love the image and versatility from both). Ultimately these things are what pushed me to Arri instead. Disappointing that they couldn't bring over more of what makes the Venice such a great package.
I wish I could afford to be pushed to Arri.
😂😂you would be pushed on your own without any camera brand trying to 😂😂@@avx111
@@avx111 Assuming you're using it professionally, its more affordable than it looks initially. A good deal on a second hand unit + income from renting it out + marketing value that comes with owning an Alexa (either for rental or for clients) + resale value when you eventually move on can all be used to bring the true cost down dramatically. There's a good video by Blaine Westropp on it if you're interested.
Buying an Alexa/Amira won't magically bring you more jobs, but "this is the same camera most blockbuster movies are shot on" is a nice marketing point to throw around.
Autofocus, electronic nd, and ibis on a cinema sensor. I think we’ve got a winner
Nice to see Sony's putting 4K 10-bit Long GOP codecs in their cine line. Hopefully this trickles down to the FX6.
I just sold my Red Gemini and ordered a delicious Sony Burrito 🌯
Next up, selling Alexa mini for Venice 2! Call me a Sony fanboy all you want... they have really stepped it up recently. No regrets!
@CVP, I'd like to request Sony for X-OCN ST on this Camera. Any idea where I can post the request so they'll see it? Thanks for a great Review.
Yes! I would definitely grab a viewfinder if Sony made one for the FX6.
Get a Zacuto Kameleon Pro EVF, it works with every camera
Is this the same sensor/image processing in the Burano as in the final production model? The rolling shutter looks so much better at 13:48 as in your newest video. Or is it because of different focal lenses?
You had me at "IBIS in a cinema camera"
So you have an explanation for the heavy wobble in the sky at 4:46? An issue with the IBIS?
Great video as always!
Internal ND and sensor stabilization!!!!!! Sony is not messing around. I’m in shock!!!
More answers of the Sony FX6 outcry. This is a go to for Documentary production.
It's been a long time coming waiting for the successor to the F5.
This would probably be great for film schools and indie feature productions but cameras above and below it in the lineup will be a better choice for all other kinds of work.
Awesome video. Loved it.
two quick questions...does it have S-Cinetone? Dual recording in all formats, resolutions, framerates. Nice review. Thanks for this.
This is the fx9 II i was dreaming of (except X-OCN). But Sony decided they make it part of "cine alta" and double the price tag. More and more it becomes clear that the good times when we get better and better cine cams for less and less money is over. The Komodo X was no negative exception.
What are you talking about? This camera is dirt cheap for what you’re getting. A standard definition digiBeta camera of 15 years ago was $40,000. This does 8K, 6K, and 4K for 25,000… That’s a giveaway.
This camera is priced amazingly compared to its direct competition. And Sony is kind enough to make cameras under $10k that are very similar if you don’t have the budget. They want to have a cinema camera for every price point and I think that’s amazing.
"What an amazing camera this is. As a photographer, I own 3x Sony A1 - 12-bit raw. The A1 has superb autofocus, everything is spot on. But this Burano is truly amazing, with 16-bit raw. Superb. I live in the Netherlands, which is why I ordered the camera from Vocas."
Hi CVP, 13:48 rolling shutter - what focal length (~) was that shot on? We try to mimic this footage, but receive MUCH worse bent lines with V1.0
You mention at 16:19 that the Burano is on your lens coverage tool, but I don't see it as an option. Are you planning on adding it? It would be very helpful; I use the site all the time.
That rolling shutter though! It’s not the same on the production models. 😮
Its like they took it Venice, kept its faithful aspects and made something special for cinema and filmmakers.
Can this camera be used without the default monitor? Or does it always have to be used?
Example, use it on a gimbal with an external Shinobi monitor attached to the handle.
Do you still have the burano with you guys? Would you say it performed better than V-Raptor in low light mode ( 3200 Base iso setting on Burano )
Thank you for the Informative video.
Does Sony Burano support X-OCN recording format?
Hi ! Many thanks for this great review. Can i ask 2 questions please :
1) is the S-cinetone profile available (in Custom mode) ?
2) can the BURANO have dual base ISO in Custom mode also, like FX6 and FX9 ? (unlike the FX30)
Just an electric remark here :
PMW-F5 normal electric consumption : 24W
ILME-FX6 : 18W
PXW-FX9 : 35W
Burano : 50W
I'll need bigger batteries 🙂
Does the Burano’s LCD work with the LCD extension cable you guys developed for the FX6/FX9?
It looks as problematically short as the cables on those cameras.
they REALLY need to add False Color at $25,000
Fingers crossed! Jake
Insane
Did you guys check if the new LCD works for the FX9 or the FX6. I noticed you said it worked the other way around.
How was the functionality of the control grip with the return to the LANC connector? One of the great user improvements from the FS7 to FX9 was moving the latter to a mico-USB; particularly the speed and control of the placement of the viewing field for image magnification in the viewfinder. FS7 lanc was so slow it was basically unusable in run and gun shooting. The FX9 USB -though a giant pain in the ass to plug in at setup- was super responsive.
Will the F55 Oled EVF work with this? I doubt it but worth asking. Superb EVF and it’s a shame they haven’t offered a similar one and a small screen for setting on the left like the F55
Is the playback the same than fx9/fx6 or you can finally scrub the clip faster?
I'm planning on purchasing a Sony Burano, to upgrade from my RED Komodo. However, I currently own a set of SIGMA High Speed Cine Zooms and a set of vintage Canon FDs in it's original casing. Will either of these sets work on the Burano?? As I don't see the FDs (other than the 300mm) or the Burano on the lens comparison tool settings.
No false color is a big bummer. If it provided that and open gate; I would definitely purchase this. Hopefully firmware updates gives us both
The IR pollution with internal ND is a biggest bummer for my part, I was a real pain in the a** with my Blakmagic (but it was a camera at 2500€ not 10 times more expensive).
Whenever 16-bit linear is discussed in one of these videos, it would helpful to mention that it's the same as 12-bit log. There is slightly more information in 16-bit linear, but it is in areas imperceptible and not useful in post. 12-bit gets you identical color in a smaller space. This is a confusing point to many people who think 16-bit linear is better than 12-bit log simply because it's a bigger number and/or it's linear.
Can you put the handle directly on the body? I can't stand those FX9 style arms - would much rather have it configured like the FX6.
@9:27 Beautiful footage.
this is nice T-shirt by the way
So, did Sony get back to you regarding how the camera achieve oversampling in X-OCN ?
I’m gonna call this one the Bruno!
I'm not sure whether the similarity to existing FX cameras when it comes to menus is a good thing. 😅 I'm really surprised about the IBIS, however! Thanks for the great vid as always
Good review but sometimes the host can speak May be a bit slower and show some features not acting so fast. Anything else just good like always from you CVP guys.
@2:37 - Did Sony ever get back to you regarding the "full frame cropped downsampled 6k raw" option and how they do it in XOCN-LT?
Any idea what plans canon has for thier eos cinema cameras? They seemed to start the refresh with the c70 and then nothing….
Also do you think we will start to see more global shutter cameras at lower price points?
Using a Canon CN7 or Fujinon Cabrio PL lens would the lens "record trigger" work?
could you compare the f55, fs7-2, fx9 and burano?
I believe this is a proper Cinema Camera but honestly not having False Color that in my opinion its the most accurate way to expose so please Sony had it on next firmware update, if possible, other thing its 4K 120p only on S35Crop mode would be a must if was on Full Frame mode, apart from this 2 facts looks to be an amazing camera. And CVP, you guys always deliver the most comprehensive reviews ;)
Wait so it has ibis and internal nd??? I thought they told us that was important! LOL
I would love to see this come down into Sony’s other offerings!
Can’t you use an IR cut filter to fix issue
How does it perform in low light?
