For those saying, "wow, how honorable he's going to pay him". The guy runs a high stakes underground game. If he didn't pay him, his game is ruined, his reputation is ruined. No one will ever play there again, and teddy wouldn't be allowed to play at any other games. He pays him the 70k he won, people see that he's legit and won't screw someone, even an enemy. So now, he'll make 10x moving forward running his game.

@M D........Likewise. One of my all-time favourite films. Thankfully, I know absolutely nothing about poker or gambling - but this film contains all the right ingredients: exceptional and beautifully poetic dialogue, brilliantly directed and acted, amazingly nuanced and believable characters, thoroughly absorbing storyline and a haunting soundtrack.
I have the DVD and watch it at least twice a month. It never disappoints and like a fine Peter Bruegel painting, you always discover something new every time you see it. In fact, I would strongly argue that it's Damon's, Turturro's and Norton's finest performances. But to me [and I'm not Jewish] Martin Landau's stunning 'Destiny chooses us' soliloquy is utterly mesmerising.

One of the scenes you can find me in (of 6 total) I was a horse trainer in the stable after the first race where they lost at Belmont. In that scene, I was standing next to a horse named "Topper" which Malkovich had ridden in a previous movie (Jonah Hex). In this scene, Malkovich fires the jockey who walks over to me. Right. Remember Mike wasn’t there to beat Teddy KGB and win his money back; he was there specifically to win enough money by dawn to pay off his debt to Grama (and by extension Teddy KGB himself). As long as Mike is still at the table Teddy wins.
Both players know this, which is why Teddy taunts Mike to keep him there, and why he gets so frustrated when Mike plays conservatively - he’s supposed to be betting aggressively into Teddy because he’s on the clock - and why it’s so satisfying that Mike completely turns the tables.

One of my favorite characters by this wonderful actor. I've heard people complain that his Russian accent isn't right. They don't get it. It's not Malkovich's accent. It's Teddy's accent. Teddy knows that people fear him, and he works to create and enhance the mystique around him. Teddy KGB uses that accent, that speech pattern, to keep his opponents off balance. It's brilliant.

Two things about this scene never made sense to me.
    - First, Mike is already well ahead in chips and has Teddy covered. So even if he lost this hand, he is still playing. But that's Hollywood.
    - Second, when the flop comes out and Mike calls Teddy's bet, Teddy says 'you're on a draw, Mike.' This line never made sense to me. The flop was 6-7-10 rainbow. So the only hand Mike could have had that would have been a draw was 4-5 for the bottom end of the straight. The only other hand that would have made sense was 8-9 (what he had) but that's not a draw, it's a made hand. It makes no sense that Teddy would have been betting so hard into Mike thinking he was on a draw in that spot. If I were him, I'd have had alarm bells going off like crazy.

Also, after the river card was dealt, Teddy went on about Mike’s hopes and dreams going down the drain and he was going to meet a dark fate. If Mike didn’t have a hand, he could have folded and still had plenty of chips to continue the game. Just my take, I could be wrong.

As much as Teddy paid Mike because of the nature of his gambling business, there was also a strong element of respect. Mike trash talks Teddy after the hand, which is almost always a no-go around mobsters.(Citation: Tommy from Goodfellas). This is why Grama initially lunges at Mike, and you can see a bit of shock on Grama's face when Mike trash talks Teddy. Even if Teddy paid up to protect his business reputation, most of the time, Mike's smart-ass remark would call for a tune-up. Teddy's insistence on sticking up for Mike and calling off his lackeys, regardless of whether or not he'd pay him, showed respect for Mike as a poker player. Nobody in the room would have thought anything of Mike getting a backhand for his wise-crack, but Teddy understands that trash talk is part of the game. Mike gambled with his life and didn't crack, and after all, only won back the initial $30 grand he lost to Teddy. (Bought in for 30 grand in the first poker scene, won 10 grand off Teddy with the judge's money, and then won another 20 grand off Teddy for a total of 30---the initial 30 that Mike lost.) At the end of the day, Teddy would've had to pay Mike for business reasons, but you can definitely see that he truly earns the mobsters' respect.

If he put Mike on an A high flush draw, he may have thought Mike paired his ace on the river and because of the way he was betting so loosely, would assume Teddy was bluffing, so mike would call and pay him off with only a pair of Aces.
