By far, the strongest supporting evidence of the "Black Thought is the GOAT" claim is his legendary Funk Flex Hot 97 freestyle. Almost uncontestedly the greatest radio freestyle of all time, it is dense, literary, allusion-heavy, and flawlessly, thrillingly delivered. To truly understand why people clamour in support of Black Thought and his excellence, drop everything and watch that on RUclips, if you haven't already. His mastery of the rap fundamentals, which he demonstrates over those 10 minutes, cannot be overstated. Seriously
Saw The Roots at a jazz fest for free this summer, and Black Thought is the best MC that I've seen rock the stage, his concert ability is even wider than his recorded verses had led me to believe. He's a monster in every facet. Loaded Lux's freestyle is something to behold as well.
Agree the freestyle solidified the argument, but don't think one can say it's "by far" the strongest evidence. It absolutely is an encapsulation of many of the myriad of GOAT criteria BT is either at the top or in the argument of top ex. live performance, breathe control, cadence, vocal quality, social commentary, references, metaphors, composition, braggadocio, etc. But these are centered on the rapping itself, whereas other career-centered criteria like longevity, popularity, record sales, peer endorsements, collaborations w/ other elites, etc. are crucial to the GOAT claim. For example, wouldn't say locksmith and mysone are GOATs based on the strength of their FUNK freestyles even though those are also incredible on many of the same criteria as BTs). The freestyle is the greatest documented 10mins of rap ever; it is definitely a cornerstone but there are many other cornerstones and many other important rocks in the wall of BTs status as GOAT
DOOM is a rabbit hole that could be fun diving down at a slow pace, just because there's so much. He's a big piece of underground hip hop history and almost all of his albums are growers. That being said: I'll say what most DOOM fans say. Listen to Madvillainy. It flows easily and never gets old. As for posse cuts: I'm not hugely informed either but I like Scenario from Low End Theory and Really Doe by Danny Brown, Kendrick, Earl Sweatshirt, and Ab-Soul
That Danny brown album was awesome. Really doe was a fantastic posse cut for that album. Each verse felt like a new spicy ingredient to the soup. But the posse cut from cheat codes brings a whole other element to the table. The beat itself sounds so formidable. It’s like the only way the rappers kept up with it was through their combined efforts. Real edge of your seat shit.
Professor, you say you don't know MF DOOM, you don't really like Danger Mouse... But you love Adult Swim. You should check out Danger DOOM; maybe even for the channel, even tough it's an older album... I think you might be suprised 😉
there are plenty of great posse cuts! my favorites are Really Doe by Danny Brown (feat. Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, and Earl Sweatshirt) and 1Train by A$AP Rocky (feat. Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, and Big K.R.I.T.)
Danger Mouse and DOOM have worked together before on an album called The Mouse and the Mask. This was made in collaboration with Adult Swim, with many lyrics referencing popular shows, hence the references on the DOOM verse here. P.S. Rahzel has a pretty wild career himself. He was involved with Ultramagnetic MCs in their early days, became a member of the Roots for a few years (although mostly just for live shows), and eventually found himself on a Björk album! Funny how those dominoes fall. (Thanks for reading these way too long paragraphs!)
As for some of the best posse cut tracks I'll go with ATCQ "Scenerio" off the The Low End Theory album. Juice Crew "The Symphony", Native Tongues "Buddy".
This intro was really enlightening, I honestly adore the way you have a journey of introspection about how grew to love music more is really invigorating. Thank you for that.
The first 4 minutes of this video is the biggest roller coaster of emotion I've ever had on a Prof Skye video. 0:00 - 0:50 Prof Skye defending what is denigrated as 'low-class' Hip Hop is why I love this channel. Shout outs to Megan Thee Stallion! 1:15 Don't worry, the title isn't provocative. I thought it was from the preview in the side bar, but then I clicked, because I know you'd never lie to or mislead me and the full title had Black Thought in it. "Perfect Rap" and "Black Thought" go together like Harry and Ron, like Ash and Pikachu, like Fantano and Hating on Nav. It's just meant to be 1:33 "-my long history of being insanely disappointed with Black Thought" ... You've never seen a human being's face transform from happy to "....What did you just say?" as quickly as mine did. I really thought about unsubscribing for a microsecond. But he saved it with the explanation.
DOOM and Danger Mouse have an entire Adult Swim album which is why those references you spoke about are on that song. It's not (just) because he's "getting high". Also I totally disagree with your Raekwon comment and it's borderline offensive but I don't think that was your intention so I'll get over it.
I know, right?!? Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface, Rae, RZA, GZA, are still killin it regularly... Meth & Deck alone have put some great projects in recent yrs.

Been waiting for this review! Masterful album, it feels like a continuation to the BlacRoc album from years ago but with black thought and Danger giving a masterclass on the art that is known hip hop. Thank you 🙏🏾
I rarely agree with anything you say but both our roads lead to loving this album and I find that entertaining and fascinating. I think I made almost the same comment on another one of your reaction videos.
This album is great. Black Thought is The GOAT in rapping. For another masterpiece in rapping check out The Sharecroppers daughter album by The Goddess MC Sa-Roc. She is something special and it has a display of rapping at its finest with a feature from Black Thought.
some great posse cuts - elucid's "sardonyx" , your old droog's "pravda" , jadakiss' "welcome to d block" , danny brown's "really doe" (my personal favourite)

Dan the Automator? I’m going on a limb but I know he samples that in Handsome Boy Modeling School album. Plus he’s an amazing sampler. Not sure if that’s who you meant though.
Great video again!! Two things.. I don't think there is a much sampling going on as you think, Danger Mouse is pretty much a one man band, he plays drums, keys, bass, guitar.. And second, please stop postponing, listen to Madvillainy, best rap album ever. Its another world..
Haven't commented for a long time but you're my favourite channel right now. Enjoyable content as always, thank you. DOOM is my favourite artist, I heavily suggest you check out madvillainy. Also the adult swim lines are probably referencing his project "the mouse and the mask" which was a collab between danger mouse and him under the name dangerdoom which they did with adult swim. It's a really nice goofy record that I love! Be good mate and peace
“It has that sour cream in it” 😂 That line took me out! Great review and go back and listen to Jagged Little Pill. I loved the album. Also go listen to his Funk Flex free style (which you’ve probably already heard by now).
this was my first experience with Black Thought and it couldn't have gone better. From first listen it's clear that he's a rapper that's refined his craft to a point of faultlessness, making it easy to look past the technicality and just get lost in how amazing it sounds. Same goes with the production from DM, just flawless.
I cannot believe you mentioned Ishkabibbles! Not sure of that spelling, but that was one of my favorite cheesesteak spots on South St. Lived there back in the early 2000s. Great review here....lovin' this record! Also, do yourself a favor and dive into Doom! I was introduced to him back in my Philly days (around the time the Madvillany album was released). I didn't get it. I liked some of the songs, but didn't get it. Now in my late 40s, it hit. You'll know the right time to listen to it.
I agree with the opinion on the album but not with your take on the Wu-Tang members. :-) Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Raekwon, GZA & Inspectah Deck are still great imo. You hear that they get a little older but they're still good. Great review tough.
They're still amazing! Prof kills me with some of his takes... HipHop is an older man's game now, imo. Even the best of the newer generations (Griselda, Armand Hammer, Mach-Hommy, etc etc) are in their 30s and 40s.
RZA was the unifying creative force behind the Wu-Tang. There were discussions where RZA put together songs that the members did not know they were on. They ended up hearing them for the first time after they were complete. RZA’s disciples never really rose to the challenge, RZA focused on movies, and a general lack of discipline due to times not being as hard led to them not producing anything great in a while.
J DILLA!! 🤔 maybe Q-Tip, or Prince Paul. Everything he did for De La Soul is Awesome and his the Opera he did that featured BDK and Chubb Rock...👍🏿👏🏿✊🏿
Yoo professor, you should definitely react to Lloyd banks new album course of inevitable 2. That’s a another contender for rap album of the year. Lyrical masterpiece
Favorite posse cuts: 1train (ASAP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badass, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, and Big KRIT); Fuckin Problems (ASAP Rocky, 2 chainz, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar); Forever (Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem); Really Doe (Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and Earl Sweatshirt)
Great video as always prof, also, I reckon Really Doe by Danny Brown with Earl, Kendrick, and Ab-Soul might be the best example of a posse cut done right.
The chorus kills me in that song, I think one of my favourite posse tracks from modern times is 1 train by asap rocky, most songs by beast coast (left hand is good) and a lot of dreamville songs r really good.
Also it's a pittty you'd miss the fact that, at least in Europe, the album was simultaneously released on streaming as available on vinyl, which is pretty old skool and involved a lot of planning, bought and spinned it the same day
There are different kinds of Hip-Hop and there is as well higher Hip-Hop. Liisten to The Holocaust's "Bliue Sky Black Death", it is definitely in that category.
14:35 I don't think it's so much that we're letting rappers age and moreso that Hip Hop is now a 50 year old genre, so of course it would become more open to having older artists excel. It's just my hypothesis that young art forms will force older artists out and prefer the young, but the older it gets the more accepting it becomes of age. I'm open to being disproven, but I'm excited to hear other people's perspective on it.
As for the posse cuts: Let's start with the two greatest IMO, both belonging to ATCQ; Scenario and The Scenario (REMIX ). Then we move on to Verbal Intercourse - Only Built for Cuban Links then the Symphony by Marley Mal and the Juice Crew, Triumph and damn near anything in the Wu-Tang. catalog. I Got My Mind Made Up - Tupac; I Shot Ya andb4,3,2,1 - Uncle L; Straight Outta Compton; Off The Books - The Beatnuts and Big Pun, Trevor Leches - Big Pun, you get the point, now go make some pancakes! I was loving this review until said that Blasphemous Nonsense...my Goodness!!
@@Kabullo76 Madvilliany till this day is still one of the most original, unorthodox albums I've heard between a producer and rapper. In my top 10 albums of all time. Listening to Cheat Codes gave me that feeling when I first heard Madvilliany and it's an amazing album but Madvilliany is a lightning in a bottle moment for me.
Lol sorry that's not even a discussion. Cheat codes is great in this time we are in hip-hop is pretty stagnant at times. Madvillany is a hip hop classic and will always be. Cheat codes just came out the other day dude chill lol.
@@poopymcpoop9945 nah i think you need to relax G! Lol..I only brought these two albums up because listening to Cheat Codes gave me the similar feeling when hearing Madvilliany for the first time and how both production is quirky and unorthodox imo as i mentioned already. Im not saying Cheat Codes is a classic, I'm comparing both albums based on the production and the skills although the themes of the album are different.
'..this is the best thing he (danger mouse) has ever done, i dont think its even close, of course, i havent heard most of the stuff hes done' haha love this
I get you probably won't read this given the amount of time since you made this video but on the off chance you read this comment, you're doing yourself a massive disservice if you don't go back and look at Black Thought's earlier work with The Roots, he's a top 5 MC of all time for me. As others have mentioned, MF DOOM deserves a deep dive also and if you like El-P's work with Run the Jewels, his peak in the late 90s, early 00s was just extraordinary.
Awesome thumbnail. Awesome video. Cool to hear you talking about the roots and stuff. Phrenology has some super interesting tracks, by the way. Anyway thanks. This got me through the last 40 minutes of work today, pulling weeds.
You should really do yourself a favor and check out Madvilliany at least to get the DOOM importance, not only because it's a great album, but it will put DOOM's impact on hip-hop as a whole into perspective for you.
Chopper by Lupe Fiasco is a fun, long posse track. All the verses are about the disparity between the flashy airs rappers put on vs the grit of growing up in ghettos. 'Filet mignon with my food stamps' 'Long white tees, but we really hoopin in Jordan's' Stripper pole in my bedroom, but imma kill my daughter if she twerks'
Wait, Jimmy Fallon is "smart?" I've heard a lot of adjectives hurled toward him, "smart" isn't one of them. Doesn't he play games with celebrities after fumbling through his monologue? I Highly recommend Danger Mouse & Jemini The Gifted One's criminally slept on "Ghetto Pop Life". I think the production on "Cheat Codes" is phenomenal, but DM leaves Black Thought a bit in the background. The vocals are fuzzed out, echoed and a bit murky, like a scuff on a poorly pressed record. Lost in the woodwork. On "The Darkest Park" Tarik sounds like he is rapping from a flooded basement. Compared to DM's work with Jemini, or The Gorillaz, or Gnarls Barkley, or The Shins, or Beck, or The Black Keys, it feels unfinished. Maybe that was the point. I've only listened to the album four or five times, but I am surprised to say I think this album could actually use some tweaks behind the boards. When you said "compressed" I think you were right on the money. Could be due to the nature Thought was recording his vocals--hotels, multiple studios, etc. I suppose we'll never know. I mean, is Thought spitting fire in a wet paper bag on "No Gold Teeth"? In the end it's a minor complaint to an otherwise amazing project. "Because" is worth the price of admission. Keep em' coming Prof. EDIT: There are so many great posse tracks! One of the best posse cuts of all time is "The Last Huzzah (Remix)" Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire ft. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown, EL-P. But umm... "Scenario" by Tribe, "Live at the BBQ" by Main Source, or "C.I.A. (Criminals In Action)" by KRS-One, Zack de la Rocha and The Last Emperor, or even "Oldie" by Odd Future.
You’re the first person I’ve seen mention this! I agree %100. The mixing leaves Thought in a similar space as The Roots albums. He sounds like another accessory to the track as opposed to the front and center

Liisten to The Holocaust's "Bliue Sky Black Death", it is definitely in that category.
Have you listened to undun for the roots? Avaa
Admittedly, the organ on the song Cheat Codes is aCTUALly playing eighth notes, not quarter notes😂 I’m such a stickler for this comment☠️☠️☠️
Black Thought & Danger Mouse "Cheat Codes" vs MF Doom & Madib "Madvilliany"?
Madvillainy is LEGENDARY, cheat codes is a good album
A comical comparison
'..this is the best thing he (danger mouse) has ever done, i dont think its even close, of course, i havent heard most of the stuff hes done' haha love this
DOOM and DM made an album for aduult swim if you didnt know. Would love a review of that
First Posse Cut off the top of my head is Really Doe off Danny Brown's Atrocity Exibition.
Dude. Scenario by Tribe Called Quest as a posse cut?
Please review Marciano & The Alchemist’s new album, “The Elephant Man’s Bones.”
Check out Danger Doom which is MF Doom and Danger Mouse collabed and flooded with Adult Swim clips.
Top Posse cut hands down is Scenario‼️
Vanillaroma - I love this dream
Best sampler in hiphop gotta be Jay Dee, RZA and Madlib up there too
The best sampler in hip hop in my books is Madlib
What are those other 2 artists mentioned from Philly that was great so I can listen? I caught moor
Larry’s next to Saint joes in the wynnefield section of west philly is the best
Sirius Black - the prisoner of Azkaban thinking of a master plan
hm i'm not sure who the best sampler is but for me its madlib
ONE OF THE GREATEST HIP HOP ALBUMS OF ALL TIME - AQUAMARINE IS EASILY A TOP 5 SONG OF ALL TIME.
Just listen to MM..FOOD you’ll love it
I get you probably won't read this given the amount of time since you made this video but on the off chance you read this comment, you're doing yourself a massive disservice if you don't go back and look at Black Thought's earlier work with The Roots, he's a top 5 MC of all time for me. As others have mentioned, MF DOOM deserves a deep dive also and if you like El-P's work with Run the Jewels, his peak in the late 90s, early 00s was just extraordinary.
This album made up for the absolute shit show the game released on the same day
MF DOOM and Adult Swim actually had a long working partnership.
I was really expecting more beat boxing.
I recommend Grip Snubnose!
You need to hear DangerDoom bro
MF DOOM Pleaaaaase I’d start with Operation : Doomsday to really get a feel for his artistry
You definitely should listen to Phrenology.
1 train by Asap Rocky is the best posse cut in the last 20 years easily
Awesome thumbnail. Awesome video. Cool to hear you talking about the roots and stuff. Phrenology has some super interesting tracks, by the way.
Anyway thanks. This got me through the last 40 minutes of work today, pulling weeds.
YES!
Top 3 album of 2022
"From I have for many years been disappointed with Black Thought..." Aight, I'm out.
You should really do yourself a favor and check out Madvilliany at least to get the DOOM importance, not only because it's a great album, but it will put DOOM's impact on hip-hop as a whole into perspective for you.
Hell yeah it is ..
Chopper by Lupe Fiasco is a fun, long posse track.
All the verses are about the disparity between the flashy airs rappers put on vs the grit of growing up in ghettos.
'Filet mignon with my food stamps'
'Long white tees, but we really hoopin in Jordan's'
Stripper pole in my bedroom, but imma kill my daughter if she twerks'
It’s a weird reason to dismiss black thought because he didn’t beatbox the guy is an incredible lyricist and an incredible rapper
It's a great album. Listen to it man, just listen. Phrenology is a great work!
Best sampler- J Dilla?
i think it's this one ruclips.net/video/7orIJyPFCxw/видео.html
Absolutely a digression, but Jim's is the best steak--or was before they burned down. May they rise again.
