Most underrated album of recent years. Every song is a banger. (Also Bob if you see this, you should listen to Manger on McNichols - it is a beautiful and underappreciated jazz rap odyssey)
1:07:17 Black thought uses the story of the scorpion and the frog to bring up yet another contradiction. If you're unaware the story of the scorpion and the frog is a scorpion needs to cross a river but cant swim so he approaches a frog and asks "can you help my get across?" The frog says "no, the second I turn my back you will sting me" the scorpion said "no because if I do that I will never get across" this convinced the frog so the scorpion get on his back but half way across the river the scorpion stings the frog. When the frog asks why the scorpion says "I'm sorry friend its in my nature" the frog dies from the vemon and the scorpion drowns. The basic idea is that people dont really truely change at their core and may fall back into negative habits and hurt you even though you were trying to help them. To immediately counter this Black Thought references that its in all creatures nature to evolve the process by which all creatures change and adapt to their environment.
One of the best rap albums of the 2020s! Also, you should definitely check out Manger On McNichols, which is one of the very greatest jazz rap albums ever made
Might just be the greatest day of my life. I just started watching your midnight marauders video and then I see this notification. I have been waiting for this album for so long. Now I have 2 bob videos to watch tonight
Gotta listen to more billy woods. IMO you'd love the new armand hammer album (he's a part of the duo) called we buy diabetic test strips. Super abstract lyrics, production by jpegmafia and a lot of other amazing producers. You'd love it
Yes. Join the "backpacker" side. Underground, real, pure whatever. I truly believe you will love a lot of it. Had to drop some suggestions for albums, based on what I have seen you like. I know you are going to eventually listen to all of DOOM's albums so no need to list the ones you are missing.... "Reflection Eternal - Train of Thought". Talib Kweli on the mic and produced by Hi-Tek (who produced a lot of the songs on the Black Star album). This is the next logical step since you liked the Black Star album and you already listen too and liked "Black on Both Sides". This album is on par with both of those albums, imo. "Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein". Best album produced by El-P. I said it. You also need to listen to RTJ4, Killer Mike - RAP Music, Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus etc, but don't wait with Cold Vein. The album is extremely atmospheric and just takes you to another planet. "Brother Ali - Shadows On The Sun". Just great underground hip hop. "Non-Phixion - The Future is Now". Based on you being a rock fan and liking Wu-Tang and similar. It's gimey and filthy. Far from "conscious" rap like Mos Def or Brother Ali, but still so good. Guest verse by DOOM!!! "Danger Mouse and Jemini - Ghetto Pop Life". Had to mention this since you liked this album (Cheat Codes). Slept on underground classic fully produced by Danger Mouse. "Gang Starr - Moment of Truth". I believe you haven't listened too any Gang Starr album...? That's as crime in itself. You also need to listen to "Glorious Game" and "Game Theory" asap... Lastly, Sean Price!!! I think you will like him because he has a similar feel as DOOM when it comes to saying ridiculous, shit without taking himself seriously. His best songs and verses are spread out amongst alot of albums and mixtape, but a great place to start would be "Monkey Barz" or "Heltah Skeltah - D.I.R.T" I could go on and on. Too many great albums!
@@justsomejusstsome8994 Nah JID’s great but theres a whole lineup of lyricists I’m putting way before him. GZA, DOOM, Ghostface, Billy Woods, Aesop Rock, KA, Mach-Hommy, Scarface, Rakim, Nas, Mos Def, Kendrick, Hov, and a whole lot more.
@@Djsjdndnfrkkee Those are more accomplished lyricists, but if we talk technicality I think JID is above all of them. His wordplay and his rhyme schemes while also being meaningful and switching up crazy flows is just mindboggling to me.
I know you see these recommendation comments as a bunch of noise, but I promise if you listen to Moment of Truth by Gang Starr, you won’t be disappointed.
It's just noise because people don't explain why he should listen to the albums. Saying he won't be disappointed isn't enough. Tell him bc DJ Premier is one of the best producers of all time. His sound is unique and you can identify it ear with his samples and scratches. That Gurus monotone style is also unique. The way he breaks ish down is dope, simplistic, yet just dope. No one sounds him. He perfectly complements Premiers production. Things like that. Gotta sell him on albums. Not, u gotta listen to this or that. It ain't enough.

looking forward to seeing you dive more into underground stuff. one that’s new I’d love your reaction to would be the latest Ka album The Thief Next To Jesus. One of his best albums yet and been hoping for more reactions to his stuff since Honor Killed the Samurai. also looking forward to more Griselda and billy woods/Armand Hammer stuff 🙏

This is one of my favourite hip hop albums of the past decade. Also, i want to say you should react to Hella, zach hills old band, or the powers that b! Both stuff i think youd love! Keep it up bob love your videos 🙏
Manger on Mcnichols by Boldy James (signed to Griselda in 2021) is my current album of the decade, it took 10 years to make and it's an insane flip of the usual drug talking album into an introspective concept album about a man dying and being reborned as a product of its environnement, all of it under jazz instrumentation. It's insanely raw and emotional
I commented on your first reaction to The Roots saying Black Thought would become a favorite of yours, and I'm glad to see that slowly become the case. Thought and DOOM are my 2 favorites of all time, and they actually have another song together on The Mouse and the Mask called "Mad Nice". It's a bonus track, so whenever you get to that album make sure to include it! Excited for you to hear more from both of them in the future

That’s super cool that your son, at his age, is into THAT kind of hip hop. Of course there’s nothing unusual about kids liking rap but it’s usually just the most pop stuff.
It's ironic that you mentioned MF Doom earlier and then went on to notice the Gas Face reference. That was the first song Zev Love X was featured on.
