    There is a method to the madness! Tivo created a design to address 2 issues The prevention of stacking electronics directly on top or below it causes access to cooler air intake from the bottom (even if another electronic it is placed on creates it's own heat like receivers) prior design gave very limited airflow choice and nothing on top of it means even if it is a cabinet the shelf above it (which would be necessary due to the design) forces the ability for the heat exhausted from the back to escape. The old design allowed the Tivo to be sandwiched between 2 electronics and put in a cabinet with a closed back which caused heat to deteriorate the electronic components before their time. So even in a cabinet with a closed back the design prevents the heat exhaust and air intake from being restricted due to lack of understanding of computers & overheating.

    Thank you for the interesting video. I am hoping you can answer a situational question for me. First I love and owned several older Tivo devices. Our community HOA has a new contract with Comcast who has implemented a new service set-up which has eliminated the cable card. The streaming service has only one stream at 720p which seems backwards to me. My question is do you know how or if I there is a TIVo solution to still get LIVE cable news ( I like CNBC and CNN ) AND record one while watching the other AND get HDTV? We can not cut the cord per se as it is part of our community, but we also don't have choice of cable company. Thank you!

    I HATE the design! I'm sticking with my Roamio, the new features are nice, but knowing TiVo they will be on the Roamio next year.

    The Bolt looks awesome. It looks like something Apple would have designed.

    Long time TiVo user. Have 4K tv, too, so thanks for this review. Having a hard time with the white curved box on this. What were they thinking? Channeling apple? If they had this in black without the curve, I'd buy it right now. Damn.

    • @Andru
      @Andru  9 лет назад

      There will be a Pro version of this in 2016. Apple would never release this - in fact the Apple TV is a small, black box! It's kind of silly but I guess they wanted more than a "boring" box this time around. Once you set it up though, you kind of forget about it.

    • @RogerZoul
      @RogerZoul 9 лет назад

      Thanks for the info on the pro version. I've got to write to them to bitch about the white only option. I think they should just give folks a choice. I would have to paint it to not notice it sticking out like a sore thumb. :)

    I have 5 TIVOs in my home system and have several older Series 1 and 2 in my basement technology history section. I too want 4K for my TVs, but refuse to buy this bent box version. In some locations, like my bedroom, the TV sits on top of the TV box. Not possible with the bent case design. I want to see a video of the product planning meeting where someone was able to defend this design choice!! As a long time technology engineer, I have no idea how that was possible. The annual service costs on TIVO seem to high for what you get... a channel guide. With 5 boxes, it adds up. They need to rethink how they treat their best customers. Only streams over wifi, not LTE. If they upgrade the Romio Pro to keep the six channels but play in 4K, they will get me again. Just received a TIVO mini today, but now I have to wire ethernet to my wife's TV to install it. What a drag.

    Only a 90 day warranty on new boxes from TiVo when it should be 1 year. They say the service is free but it's really not because the box should retail for $150 but they still get you for $300. I pay Time Warner cable $30 monthly for dvr & service fees but have a $200 Best Buy gift card so will still get this TiVo because my balance will be $100 for the unit & service for 1 yr.

      Tivo boxes produce a much better quality picture than Time Warner...100X better or I already would have gone back. TWC charges $11 per box per month and they don't work half the time...and they are junk for picture quality.

    I have an old tivo model, of 2012 more or less, my question is if you have an annoying sound with that product when is working , i mean you watching the tv , and hearing like a "cri cri" or something , is not a big loud but is annoying , is more detectable when the tv sound is low, at night for example..

    • @jimt90
      @jimt90 7 лет назад

      The clicking is the hard drives of the old Tivo's operating they would get louder over time as the heat would wear the fans etc. The HDD of the Series 2 and 3 Tivo's were a standard desktop size footprint the series 2 used IDE drives that were very noisy as they worked. The newer Romeo storage is a smaller and quieter laptop HDD with greater capacity and much quieter. Avoid blocking exhaust or intake of air and it will reduce the sound substantially. When the unit gets hot it will crank up the fan to try to reduce the temperature. I periodically will clear out the dust especially since we have cats that seem to get fur everywhere.

    Hi, We have old school Cable with Home Time Warner DVR - Tired of paying rental prices. Does Time Warner give you flack about getting a cable card and switching to just their internet? AND is it hard to self install?

    • @Colortiniz
      @Colortiniz 8 лет назад

      Nope. I use TWC with a Roamio Plus. Setup took 5 minutes on the phone. They ship the Cablecard. You will probably need a tuning adapter which you can pick up at their office when you drop off your old cable box.

    I am buying a TIVO Bolt 500GB tomorrow for $50.00 on CL. I have a TIVO Premier XL, yet I need an upgrade. I have 3 HD Tv's and I think w/ the WIFI capability I should be good. I CUT The Cord 2 years ago and I'm fine. Plus, cheap "WIFI bridges" are a pain... Your thoughts??!

    I have bought two NEW Tivo Bolt OTA's this week at 2 different Best Buy stores and both locked up on me. This is part of the message I received on BOTH Tivo's. "Please report this problem. You have encountered and unexpected error, and the UI can not continue. Please report this issue as part of your participation in our beta program". It goes on with some technical stuff. I was trying to set both Tivos up for the first time. I've never owned a Tivo and never participated in any beta program. I could not set up and account because Tivo is asking for both the unit Serial # which is on the bottom of the Tivo and they want Tivo MAP (Media Access Key) # which you have to retrieve from the main menu. Can't access main menu if Tivo locks up on you which it did twice. I think maybe either Tivo or Best Buy, of both, are knowingly selling faulty Tivos.

    ok im confused!!! why if i am not using it for cable and only for over the air and streaming will i have to give them $15 a month after 1 year? what is the service fee for? please help me understand, roku, apple tv, amazon fire etc etc dont have monthly fees why would Tivo?

    • @Andru

      It connects to the TiVo service daily to get up-to-date programming data for TV, which powers your recordings as well as the Suggested recordings. None of the other devices you mentioned need to keep up-to-date programming data for DVR functionality!

      +Andru Edwards thanks! May i ask you another question? So i can use the Amazon, Netflix, etc, etc without paying the $15 month? can i watch the OTA channels but just can't record them if i don't sign up for the service?
      thank you in advance

    • @christinehamann5816
      @christinehamann5816 8 лет назад

      you should get amazon and Netflix right with your normal cable box for no fee...although their fee for TWC anyways is $22/month for 2 boxes. I just bought a Sony DVD player with all those apps and can watch for free.

    Im an old school tivo user. So much so that i hate the roamio. I tried every single series in their lineup and had to step back to the premiere. The set up was brutal. My old premiere is on deaths door and i am hesitant to upgrade to the bolt. I wish there were more reviews on this. Ive had multiple Comcast techs to my house and these guys are behind when it comes to setting up roamios. So i fear they will also be behind when it comes time for the bolt. I may have to get an older more reliable XL4.

    • @Andru
      @Andru  8 лет назад

      +Sjrick all you need is a cablecard, which Comcast can activate over the phone using info provided on the setup screen on the bolt!

    • @Sjrick
      @Sjrick 8 лет назад

      Every tivo needs a cable card. Which Comcast supplies. The issue is pairing it. Most techs wont allow me their dispatchs number. Ive even bribed them to get it but they wont give it to me. All they are doing is making a call. Ive been thru every facet of tivo you could imagine. I could literally be a tech person for comcast and tivo,, lol.

    • @christinehamann5816
      @christinehamann5816 8 лет назад

      why do you need a cable guy to set up your TiVo...lol...no need for them....do it yourself man....don't be lazy

    • @Sjrick
      @Sjrick 8 лет назад

      Oh no trust me, i wish i could do it myself. These guys will NOT give out the special number to the customers. Just recently i got super lucky when Comcast did set up the cable card over the phone. That has never happened before. The cards they use are over 10 years old and half of them dont work. Which is why they always call out techs. I usually exhaust every method before they send out trucks.

    • @PGHammer21A
      @PGHammer21A 7 лет назад

      It's no harder to set up a Bolt with Comcast than it is a Premiere - in fact, the setup is identical. I'm looking at a Bolt as a direct replacement for a failed Premiere (straight hardware failure).
