    Solution to removing sled wobble: • Improve Kreg Accu-Cut ...
    I'm very impressed with the accuracy of Kreg's new KMA2700 circular saw to track saw conversion kit.
    Note: Kreg recommends using a circular saw with a metal upper blade guard, since it will lead to less deflection in the blade and a better overall cut. They also recommend using at least a 40T blade, which will help produce a cleaner cut.

    Your bevel adjustment lever is adjustable. It is spring loaded in that you can move it out away from the front of the saw and rotate it to a different stop location. Hope that makes sense and I didn't miss someone else pointing this out. Nice work on the video, thanks.

Just a simple and direct discussion of the tool covering the features of the tool, assembly and setup with learned tips, demonstration of tool in action, and comparison to alternatives. All that in a very reasonable 16 minutes. Well done!

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks! The 0.010" inaccuracy isn't a big deal for anything but panel glue-ups, but then it really matters. I think the key is trimming the sacrificial edge first, and then using that to make sure the track is straight against the level. I tried messing with the level against the angled track rails first, but couldn't get it to stay in place, and there wasn't an easy way to clamp that geometry.

    Nice well done review. What I missed was if you covered the most critical part of a joining or edge cut. That being to make very sure that the blade on your saw is set to 90 degrees to the flat surface. Especially when using only one circular saw for so many tasks, it's very easy for this setting to become off a tad bit. That gets amplified as you join pieces also. As important as you showed to get the two pieces of track aligned, it's also as important if not more so, to re-check that the saw blade is set a square 90 degrees to it's plate. The small things came create much bigger issues. Always re-check.

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  5 лет назад +1

      You're absolutely right about making sure the blade is perfectly 90 degrees! I didn't cover it in this review though, since I was mainly evaluating the Accu-Cut for straight line accuracy.

    Loved the video. Here are a couple tips that work for me. Whenever I am jointing an edge (jointer or saw), I reverse one of the boards just in case I haven't lined it up perfectly. The angles will then compliment each other and fit perfectly. I have had very long pieces, hard to handle on my jointer. With those, I will get a close edge, glue them together loosely, then use my straight edge to split the jointed line. That has also been a work around I have used with success.

    I have a tip that probably nobody will see because there are so many comments on this ;-) You know that square gray guide that the saw butts up against on the side? Mine wasn't wide enough for the saw; even when it was maxed out the saw wouldn't reach far enough over for me to cut the sacrificial edge. So I made a shim. But then I read the rest of the instructions. The screw in that guide is actually off-center, so you can remove it and turn the whole thing around 180 degrees which gives you double the width.

  • @HBSuccess
    @HBSuccess 7 лет назад

    Howdy mr Doresoom - just wanted to mention there are several directly competing "bring your own saw" tracksaw alternatives on the market - a cpl at least have an 8'+ track option. They all look very similar - the main dif is how they mount your saw. The Kreg rig looks Ok but B4 I ditch my tried and true shop-biilt shoot boards that have served me perfectly for 20 yrs - that long track is a must. You correctly point out the flaws in Kreg's ripping system. It might be Ok for rough work but I can cut to a chalk line no problem for that. What I want are cabinet saw quality cuts - and a good tracksaw can produce that. Good review - keep em going!

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  7 лет назад

      Good point - the ones I know of are TrueTrac and EZSmart. The TrueTrac 4' kit is double the price of the Kreg. Rockler's EZSmart 54" kit is also double the price. However, those kits are one piece tracks, which don't require any tedious alignment setup, and they also offer extensions for a full 8' cut capacity.

    Planning to use this to do some keft cuts on mdf. On my first test I noticed that the saw guard could get in the way since is superficial cut (3/16 deep) that is pretty annoying. Also the "rest end" seems to be a bit higher than the rail, feels like a little bump when you transition to the rail.

    Thanks for the great walkthrough. I have the exact same saw as you and just bought the accu-cut on your recommendation. Setting it up for the first time, I've got the gray block pushed as far to the left as it can go (looking from behind the saw), and it seems like it's just barely too far away from the "sacrificial edge." Like, the blue strip might let nicked a little, but isn't going to get trimmed 1/32 when I make that all-important first cut. Any suggestions?

    • @DoresoomReviews

    I’ve had one now for 3 years and my review of it would 7 out 10. Pros: cost, descent accuracy, descent quality, none skid pads Cons: saw shoe adapter plastic will break and loss accuracy, multiple locking bar set screws vibrate loose ( I’ve lost 4 of them while stored in the van). Bottomline - very good for the price point, but it you want more reliability pay the extra dollar for a dedicated track-saw and track system.

    • @DoresoomReviews

      BTW, it looks like the screws Kreg is using are Philips drive 9/32" long 10-24 stainless screws. I bought some 5/16" long hex drive ones on McMaster for about $5 for 100, but lumped it in with a larger order to help ease the cost of shipping: www.mcmaster.com/94355A226/
      That combined with some purple 222 Loctite should keep them from falling out.

    Great review, thank you. Question: What happens to the sacrificial piece you cut if you replace your saw blade with one that is slightly thicker or with more set in the teeth?

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  6 лет назад +1

      If the new blade's teeth are wider, it will automatically trim a little more off of the sacrificial edge, so before making your first cut with the new blade, just run the saw along the track to establish the new zero-clearance cut line. If the new blade has a thinner kerf, you'll have to re-zero the saw by adjusting its lateral position on the sled and trimming a little more off of the sacrificial edge. Either way, every time you change blade widths you'll have to trim a little more off. Luckily you have two sides of the track to work with, and when both of those are trimmed to nothing, then you can order replacement sacrificial edge guides from Kreg.

    This is a good low budget system but needs modification to work well. I replaced the track #1 Phillips set screws with Hex type screws which made a more secure track joint. Also, I dedicated my battery powered saw for the Kreg Accu-Cut as I only use it for plywood panels and it is more portable with a battery saw. The plastic end piece should be drilled and tap the aluminum rail for a small screw to keep these pieces locked in place together so you can hang this system on a hook without it coming apart. I also shimmed the space between the saw adapter and the aluminum track guides to remove some movement for more accurate cutting. I found buying some Kreg hold down clamps made for this system helps to make cuts without it slipping out of place. For me after using this Kreg system, I believe I would have rather have made a shop built version that has the saw guides on both sides of the saw (you can find how to make these on RUclips) but that is just my preference.

    The clamps you're using for your Accu-cut is, in my opinion better than the ones made by Kreg. I have the Kreg clamps for this and am not really happy with them. They're made of plastic and are small, and I often worry that I'm clamping them too tight and might break them, because they seem flimsy. I would prefer to get aluminum ones like those you have, as they see more rigid and able to hold tighter.
    Also, I find my Kreg sled has too much play to actually get a straight cut reliably. I often end up with 1/16" to 1/8" deviation from straight along my cuts. I have since switched to the Bora system and have no more issues with cutting straight.

    As much as I want this, I think I'm just gonna run my saw along a piece of solid oak as a straight edge and see what happens. All these specialty tools add up in cost quick and I don't have space for a table saw.

    I read some users that they say there is a play between the sled and track. And you can see blue shavings from the sacrificial plastic rail. Anyone seen anything like that. Will do another cut tonight see how this does.

    • @jasonnordgren1844

      I just got mine yesterday and did notice a tiny bit of play between the sled and track. I cut a very thin strip of self adhesive felt and placed it along one edge of the center channel on the sled. I won't be using it until tomorrow, but it seems to have removed any play and the sled still slides nice and smooth.

    • @lederse
      @lederse 6 лет назад

      Jason Nordgren I does the trick. The good thing is that it has two sacrificial edges. I will try some felt. Can you send a picture? BTW for shorter cuts make a habit of going a the way from on side to the other. Stopping in the middle will chip the sacrificial edge.

    • @jasonnordgren1844
      @jasonnordgren1844 6 лет назад +2

      Constantin, try this link: photos.app.goo.gl/NpA3edEh1qucAKQC3
      I cut the strip about 1/8" wide and cut a slight chamfer in the leading edge to hopefully prevent it from catching on the joints between the starting block and also between the tracks. As you can see I only placed it on one side of the center channel and it seems to do the trick. Mine didn't have a huge amount of play to begin with, but this seems to completely eliminate it. Once I try some test cuts, if there is any play I may add another strip to the other channel, but I don't think it will be necessary.

    How do you feel this would work in a more vertical setting. I just made a place to cut panels that are full sheets and it sits at about a 70 degree angle. Would this stay in place?

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  5 лет назад +1

      I'm not confident it would work well for an upright panel saw application. You wouldn't have the weight of the saw holding itself in place since the track doesn't lock on. The track might stay in place at least, but wouldn't be nearly as secure as a horizontal configuration.

    So once you set up your saw on to the sled for the Accu-Cut system, can you use that saw and sled on the Rip-Cut system? Or does each system need it's own sled?

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  5 лет назад +2

      You can use the same sled for both. I'd set it up for Accu Cut first, then adjust the cursor for the Rip Cut.

    You might want to read your saw's owners manual. You can probably adjust where the bevel adjustment lever stops to avoid interference with the Kreg set screw.

      Yes. The assumption is that you will dedicate one particular saw for use with the system.

    Just two questions I have a Makita 18v cordless will it work? Also will I be able do 45 degree cuts like say to make french cleats?

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  6 лет назад

      Sorry, I can't help with the Makita question, since I don't have one of their saws. Kreg recommends against using this with bevel cuts, and I haven't tried it with mine. At the least, you'd have to use one side of the guide for bevel cuts, and the other for straight cuts, since the sacrificial strips would be cut at different areas.
