Reminds me of my first bench from Sears Catalog 45 years ago with the 110lb. bar and plastic, sand filled weights. We all wanted to be Arnold after seeing him win Mr. Olympia on ABC Wide World of Sports.

    • @TruthTellert63
      @TruthTellert63 3 месяца назад +6

Some of the best training I ever did was on a similar set that my parents purchased for me from Sears at about the same time. (I went big & got the 132 lb. set with red, white, & blue plates.) Although I now have several olympic sets, I still prefer to train with standard plates most of the time (albeit vintage iron ones made by York).

@@TruthTellert63 other guys from the neighborhood had various versions of what I had but one kids Dad had a set of York plates and bar with dumbbell sleeves you could add plates to. We lived in Pennsylvania and he traveled to the York Factory in York PA to get his set. Great memories.

I particularly appreciate the flaws being pointed out on relatively inexpensive equipment; IMO it's extra-important for the people who "don't know that they don't know" and are just looking to get into a hobby. I don't want any buddies who are just getting into buying some home gym equipment to make the "I'm going to bench at home without a spotter and without a spotter arm" mistake.

My first home gym when I was a kid was something like this, made in USA, I think PA. Can't remember the brand but it was brown. It was awesome but had the same safety issue Coop mentioned. For that reason, I ended up getting into the dip attachment instead which I do to this day as a result. When you flipped the dip bars around, they became a Squat rack. No stability issues there and had leg extension, curl, and preacher curl attachments to boot. Overall I loved it and believe it led me to a life of strength that has kept me fit today well into my middle years.

Back in the late 90’s I owned the Golds Gym version of this. It did have a lat pull-down and low row as well. I agree 100% Coop. This is a entry level piece and might be nice for someone who just wants to dip their toe into the home gym community. For the price this offers a lot IMO, but most folks will quickly outgrow it. Thanks for the review.

I think more "Ultra budget" reviews would be nice. I personally get frustrated when I see a "budget friendly" review or build... And it's all top of the line brands... Like why are Marcy products never reviewed, or even CAP, or GMWD, Syedee... The true budget (I guess now it's called Ultra budget) products

Because those brands don't send him stuff. He only does reviews of products that are sent to him for free, not out of his pocket. I guess they figured his viewers are not the market they're going for. A brand like Marcy targets the average Costco strolling person that is not really into fitness but sees the equipment and thinks that they should get back to working out like they did in highschool 20 years ago.

It's good that you review stuff like this and I completely agree: don't buy a bench press rack that doesn't have safety spotter arms. ESPECIALLY if you're a beginner lifter and this rack is clearly designed for beginner lifters. It's always important to have a safe exit ready when doing compound lifts, you've got to know how and wear to drop it. Although I have done 5x5 benching with a barbell, I much prefer to bench by myself with dumbbells.

I had a very similar bench for years. it was a good starter bench. I agree bench press can be dangerous on it. After getting myself trapped under the bar, I went into the workshop and used a couple of better quality saw horses as spotter arms. Not ideal but got the job done.
The bench lives on at my brothers house, where my niece and nephew are using it.

I'm glad you aren't recommending these kinds of benches without proper safety precatiouns.

Thank you for continuing to feature lower budget products. I love hearing about the latest and greatest equipment, but I think it's important to get that same high quality coverage and insights on the larger range of products so more people can still come here when they're buying something within their budget.

I've always wondered why most gyms have bench press stations with no spotter arms. Usually there's nobody spotting, and even when there is, they'd never catch a sudden drop if for example a ligament tears.

    It is a decent bench.
When the box arrived, I noticed that it read STANDARD SIZE BENCH. I took that to mean that it was "standard sized" and not an Olympic bench. I wrote Customer Support twice, and they assured me it was an Olympic-size bench each time.
I put it together, and like you noticed it was not quite as wide as an Olympic Bench. I view it to be more of a 3/4-sized Olympic Bench. It's serviceable and does the job. I have become adept at shifting my hands wider or narrower as needed.
I do work out alone though. To that end, I never do a flat bench presses. It's always an incline press. My flat chest workout is push-ups.
    Good review.

Nope, nope, and nope! I can deal with cheap, but no safety spotters (long ones at that) is a complete deal breaker, full stop! These should not even be allowed to be sold without them.

More budget pieces and European brands. I cannot buy most of the stuff you review due to my location.

For strength, they make the metal with the ridge instead of increasing the thickness or design. Cheap AF.

You can't do squats with this thing and it has no spotter arms for bench press. I don't get why anyone would want one of these. Why not just get a squat stand, with spotter arms and a flat bench instead? It would take the same floor space and it's so much better. I'm saying this because I used to have one back in the day and I sold it and got a power rack instead and never looked back.

A pool noodle would make better padding on the leg curls.

It’s a cheap all in one. These have been around forever. People who don’t know anything about gym equipment buy this. Sad.
