Really loved this lesson Austin. Not only because Gary is one of my absolute favorite drummers out there and the solo is amazing, but mainly because you totally nailed it and were able to give some real advice for people who might want to get into this.
You're easily the best and most professional online drummer out there. I hope you reach a million subscribers. Also you should totally do a video on Matt garstka's Meinl performances in the studio, he does some really wicked stuff.
I totally dig how you're a humble dude. You're not at all bragging or trying to show off your chops, just trying to share this inspiring solo with all of us in the drum community. It's much appreciated brother.
Dude.. this is synchronicity right here. I was just listening to this at the park while on a walk before.. this solo came on and I just had to sit down and replay it like 4 times trying to decipher this masterful playing.. I was just completely floored. I never understood why Novak doesn't seem to get as much mention as guys like weckl, vinnie etc... one of the most fluid and controlled drummers ever.. and of course completely tasteful. I've heard him kill it on simple backbeat/groove stuff too... amazing feel all around. Thanks for this man! Love your content!
Hello Austin. Just wanted to thank you for putting this up. I have been playing and teaching for over 30 years and I can tell you that your playing and breakdowns are awesome ! You are also a terrific player and there is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. Thanks again dude.
woooooah !!!! my dream has come true ... that´s absolutely my most fave solo (any kind of solo of gary) ever .... now i can see it note by note analysis .... i´ve been listening to this for 17 years ..... and still didn´t figure out each single note ... thank you so much ,,, still mind blowing .... Gary´s playing is supernatural
Extremely useful! I always keep rewinding back to this solo as I listen to this tune. And here's your full layout! Thank you, Austin! So much work you do!
Austin you put so much time and effort and have such high production videos. Thank you so much. And the fact that you offer PDF downloads of these transcriptions is just off the hook.
This is one of your better lessons. I love it! Going over the note dynamics and how to keep ghosts notes feeling flowy and fluid really helped me understand the groove of some drum patterns a lot better. Excellent stuff! If I could recommend a drummer for you to do, it would be Matt Halpern of Periphery! His drum pattern at the beginning of the song "Make Total Destroy" is absolutely killer!
Austin, I've never sent in a comment, but I've watched a LOT of your videos and both very impressed with your own abilities and with your curiosity and commitment to expanding other drummers' physical and mental skills along with furthering your own. --- As to this particular lesson, I didn't know anybody else who was hip to Gray Novak and this particular album in particular. Absolutely one of my favorites... even this very solo! Thanks for diving into it, and for just doing what you do. Cool, brother!
Beautiful Playing Austin!! Gary Novak is indeed definitely one of the GREATS!! Thanks for posting this and all your hard work into doing such awesome and informative videos, from the land down under!!
Austin man I love this series! I've learned so much from you. I'm a concert pianist that fell in Love with the drumset and when I found your videos man they really helped me understand the instrument on a deeper level! Thanks for your work in the drumming community!!!
Absolutely spot on about the use of dymanics, Austin. Surely this is what sets the greats like Gary apart from the rest of us mere mortals. The textural qualities they are able to create allow the music to breathe around the drum part. And if I might say, I think you absolutely nailed the solo.
Austin, this one is indeed a greeeeeeaaaat lesson! Not to mention this is without a doubt Gary's best performance recorded. This album, as you said, is a true master piece, and this song, in particular, is beautiful! Very tasteful choice, since not so many people know this record. Congrats for the amazing work, mate! Cheers from Brazil!
I know you're being modest and being a great drummer means being a life long student, but you nailed it man! Great work on the transcription! can't wait to try it!
I love your videos man, you do such an excellent job at trying to stay true to the solos you're breaking down, and it's very obvious that it requires a lot of your time and skill to produce these videos. Despite how humble you are about your own skills, I think you're doing things right and also paying great tribute to the drum legends that you're analyzing. Definitely subbed, and definitely going to binge-watch all of your videos to soak up as much as I can (and in the rare hope of finding a lick I'll actually be able to play haha). You're doing great man, I hope you are able to continue on in this endeavor!
Really glad you put the spotlight on Gary Novak! I recommend the 1994 Santiago performance with Chick which is on RUclips. There's a particularly "Mmmmmm!" fill around the 58:00 mark. Love your work Austin.
It is an amazing example of his style. It is so clean and powerful. I saw a clinic of him in 1995-1996 when the Time Warp album came out. He was touring with Chick. I was starting out at the Rotterdam Conservatory that year and I was completely embarrassed with myself seeing this scrawny little man (his words exactly!), murdering these drums with his powerful single stroke rolls with double bass accents. He actually broke the axl of the second pedal. It was an amazing experience.
Austin. Thanks for all your great content. Very inspirational. The sticking on this transcription would be very helpful. Just an FYI. Keep up the great work.
Hi Austin. Great job mate! Keep up the great work! Just to realise that Gary Novak is improvising this shows how amazing a player he is! I heard this album 20 years ago as an old friend had it. I've just bought it off eBay from Japan. Shit!!!! So much work to do with so little time!
Amazing Austin, I havent heard to the elcetric band, but i did hear the acoustic band with dave weckl, and he sounds amazing. I will pay more attention to these bands
Hey Austin I just recently subscribed to you and really love your stuff. I especially love the way your kit sounds so I was hoping you could maybe put out a video of how you like to tune your drums. Thanks man!
Really enjoyed this lesson Austin... Is it possible to get the r and l {right hand = r and left hand = l } as they apply to the notes you have masterfully transcribed ??
99,9%! 5:56 Only missed the second ride hit in the second bar! :-) But really, great! Thanks for teaching me more about Gary Novak. I thought that his work with Holdsworth was killer, but this is equally insane. You just put me up to more analyzing again, thanks for your inspiration!
Awesome content per usual. I would be lying if I said I didn't pop a chub everytime I see a new study the greats episode on my feed. Your next project should be tackling the brain dance by animals as leaders. Matt garstka is insane.
Man! Great work Austin! That's a beastly one! Novak deserves way more notoriety than he gets. By chance have you heard his solo at the end of The Sixteen Men of Tain, on the Allan Holdsworth album of the same name? Cudos dude!
I listen this album obsessly when I was a kid. I think Gary Novak is a very underrated drummer. He is a monster of a drummer.
Wish I could " embarrass" myself like you do.
haha my thoughts exactly
My skills have tripled because of You Tube and all if offers. Austin you are the best and couldn't possibly embarrass yourself.
LOL.
Damn, your chops are so effortless
Really loved this lesson Austin. Not only because Gary is one of my absolute favorite drummers out there and the solo is amazing, but mainly because you totally nailed it and were able to give some real advice for people who might want to get into this.
+DrSticktrick Thanks Lutz! I appreciate that man
Gary Novak drumming in Allan Holdsworth's song "The Drums Were Yellow" is absolutely phenomenal!! Check that song out!!
Yes!! Gary Novak is the man. Thank you so much for this one! More from him would be great :)
You're easily the best and most professional online drummer out there. I hope you reach a million subscribers. Also you should totally do a video on Matt garstka's Meinl performances in the studio, he does some really wicked stuff.

Gary Novak has always been one of my favorites! Time Warp is another outstanding album to check out.
Yea I love that one too... I think Paint The World is more in your face and badass but Time Warp is very interesting and dark.
Time Warp my all time favourite and definitely underrated album from Chick.
Absolutely AMAZING job of transcribing and breaking this down. THANK YOU!
