I'm retired law enforcement. I wore this watch on duty for the last two years of my career. You can't possibly be more "rough and tumble" with your watch than I was with mine, yet the crystal survived unscathed. Every review I see of this watch has concern for the box crystal. My experience showed this is entirely overblown. Wears fine on my 7.5 inch wrist, but it's my limit.

@@kidstlme8230 the extent that watch snobs will go to dismiss quartz movements is astonishing. I guess you have to dream up an "end of the world" scenario to justify owning an automatic now. Hey "Brainiac". if an EMP burst has effectively brought down everything with an electronic heartbeat, the last concern I have is whether or not my watch is working.
If nuclear holocaust has blasted us back to the stone age, the fact that I have a automatic watch on my wrist, isn't going to jump start the industrial revolution.

I have this watch. It is a bit big for my puny wrists but I find myself wearing it more often than any of my other watches. I just can’t get over how accurate it is. It hasn’t deviated 1 second in the time I have had it. I set it at dst time change and that’s it. Amazing.

    • @davidgay6685
      @davidgay6685 8 месяцев назад

And one other point. Put this on the widest and thickest strap you can find and it won’t seem as large as it does on the included straps. I had a custom made leather strap for another of my watches and I put it on the lunar pilot. Makes a great difference.

My 9 inch wrist is waiting. I ordered this watch before the video was over. I'm hoping this will become my daily driver. I've had one experience with a Bulova before - sort of - it's long story but it's true and I think quite funny. I hope you enjoy it. When I was 15 I worked for my father at his auto shop in Detroit. Among other things we serviced a fleet of flower delivery trucks. A few of the drivers were somewhat shady. I owned 2 watches, a Timex I wore when working and a Helbros I wore when not working. One day one of the drivers offered to sell me a beautiful Bulova for $40 (this was about 1978). I inspected it the best I could and it looked great to my eyes. I ran to the office and asked my father if Bulova was a good marque and he said it was so I did the deal. This was a lot of money to me because I was being paid $2.25/hour. After the deal was done I went into the office to show my father my new object of pride and barely cracking a smile he said "Yep Bulova makes a damn good watch, and Bolivia is a country in South America, I'm not sure what Bulovia is." On close inspection the face of my watch spelled BULOVIA. It ran for 3 days and then stopped. All the adults laughed at me for weeks and I was offered all kinds of "good deals" from the rest of the crew. I laughed with them - you can never take yourself too seriously. Thanks for reading.

He has a 7” wrist and, I can honestly say, it gets even better looking with nicks and scratches, rocking that tool vibe. He is pretty hard on his watches but the crystal has never chipped. I'm not a watch collector, or connoisseur, or aficionado, by any stretch of the imagination. I've been wearing plain digital casios daily and Suuntos for decades. Now, I remember my father, who was a chief engineer in oil carrier ships, having an awesome watch. It was a Tag Heuer diver with an orange silhouette of a frogman on the dial. That´s part of his legacy to me.
I also wanted to leave something like that to my children, and first time I actually thought about that, I chose the then new Tissot T-touch, but unfortunately I lost it( I was then in the spanish marines expeditionary unit). I got frustrated and started to think that the "legacy watch" idea was stupid.
So fast forward to 2017 and my daughter is born. Back comes the idea of the legacy watch... This time it's no gadgety thing. I went for the Citizen "Marina Militare" prodrive automatic diver. Does it look nice on my skinny wrist? Not at all...
And here´s my point after all the bullshit: I don't give a damn fuck about how the watch looks, if it's appropiate for a cocktail at the royal palace, or anything like that. I just want it to be my watch. One that, if I take care of it, I can pass onto my children. I wear it every day, on every occasion. I want it to be a part of me.
The Bulova has character and heritage in spades. It's an incredibly cool watch! Don't care about it not fitting exactly to your wrist. Be proud to wear it, to make it a part of your legacy. It really deserves that kind of love.

I have admired this piece from afar for a while. I have accepted that the Omega is probably not realistic for me and purchased the Bulova. I don't mind the size at all. It is a really great watch. I purchased a Barton elite silicone band in black to solve the band issues. I don't mind the leather "carbon fiber" looking band, but envisioned this as more of a sporty looking watch.

I took advantage of the latest Amazon Prime day and finally purchased the Bulova Lunar Pilot (two band special edition). Yes the lug to lug is a little long, but nothing crazy really, it actually wears smaller then many of my watches and my sweet spot is generally 41-42mm cases. The dial including the tachymeter is actually about 38 mm in diameter. I have small wrists (6.75 “) and I’m lovin’ it. A great tool watch with an amazing back story for very little dinero. The Bulova precisionist movement was also a great choice in my opinion.

I've had this watch for several years - since just after they first came out. I agree with Jodi's comments about the size. I wish that Bulova had made it 43mm like the original. Give it some time though and I expect you'll get used to it. Especially after you start getting tons of compliments about it. I actually got one from a little old lady in a supermarket. The original also had a 12 hour elapsed time feature that I find more useful than the new 60 minute timer. The "top hat" crystal is a feature of the original watch, so although it's an unusual way of installing a crystal, at least they have a good reason for it on this model. Great review!

I think the idea is that the watch is a tool, so it doesn't matter if it overhangs on your wrist.

I peeled the stickers off my Lunar Pilot YESTERDAY 👍🏼.
Love it. After a l o n g time saving, then getting distracted by other cheaper watches and buying those and then repeating the process, I finally made it to Lift Off.
I managed to get one (new) from a Grey Marketeer on eBay for even less than JomaShop's current $339USD....
    1st thought : F A R K it's big. I've got a flat 8 1/4" wrist and I reckon I only just get away with it.
2nd thought: I actually like the leather strap that everyone complains about, quite a lot. I always swap out the stock straps on a new watch so I have 2 cracking slaps of leather on the way from Kvarnsjö...I should've only bought 1! I haven't even put it on the NASA strap yet.
This one's a keeper: I can feel it.

I too, had looked at the Lunar Pilot in reviews for quite some time, but didn’t jump on it till a month ago, when it went to $336 on Amazon. My wife’s first reaction was that it looked too big on my 7.25 inch wrist. I wish it was just a hair smaller, but I am hanging on to this watch until I die. I did put it on a Mora NATO, which I saw on Dave’s channel, and find I like it more than either of the supplied straps. This was my fifth Bulova and led me to look at some older (smaller) Bulovas. I purchased two Accutrons, a Breckenridge (26B29) and an Apollo 11 (26B62). Then a NOS Accu-Swiss A-15 (65A107) instead of the new and larger 96A245. Last night, I order a refurbished Curv Chronograph (96A186). I still have more Casios and Citizens, but my Bulova collection is catching up. (Update: After a month, I put it back on the supplied Zulu, which now seems better than the NATO. The descent into madness begins. The accuracy is incredible. Easily better than 10 seconds a year.)

Willard Hooton Actually the watch was 43mm.....I just double checked. The true Apollo 15 moon watch was actually a Universal Geneve prototype. Bulova at that time had recently purchased the Universal Geneve and gave this prototype to Astronaut Col. Dave Scott. The original watch used a mechanical Valijoux 72 movement and required a larger case. When you consider in 1971 the average men’s wristwatch was 38 to 40mm, this was a rather large watch. In modern terms, the average watch today is 40-42mm, so I say its dead on in size comparison as a modern replica in my opinion. This link explains the Geneve if your interested:
      wornandwound.com/bulova-used-universal-geneve-get-moon-can-get-one-today/
And this link is particularly interesting cause it covers the issue and the original patent before the watch every went up for auction or the replica was created:

I have an 8.5” wrist, this watch fits me like a glove. I’ve rocketed this off of a filing cabinet, thought for sure that I would have broken the crystal. Scraped the paint off it and the crystal was fine. The case got a nick though. At 52 mm it sits fine on my wrist, no overhang on the lugs, and at 45mm it’s the perfect size for me. 44mm is my ideal fit, this is perfect for me. The dial is phenomenal, the movement is incredible and the accuracy is,without exception, the best I have seen in a wristwatch. I have the bracelet and the NATO strap version and have had no issues with the sapphire, case or quality. Need a bigger wrist to wear it I’m guessing

I was concerned about the size , but I needn’t be, I found it fine on my 7 1/4 inch wrist. Like everyone else, I'd prefer that it was a bit smaller. However, the movement is very large and I think their desire to keep the watch case the overall shape of the original left us with this size. Mine is the bracelet version, my wrist is a bit bigger than Jody's, and I have no problem wearing it. A Speedmaster Pro was a gift to myself for retirement last year, and I prefer its size and case shape, but the Bulova sees its share of wrist time. Thanks for the review!

  • @UGA.D

I picked up the bracelet version in its first run. I set it and let it run uninterrupted for the first 3 years (not adjusting for DST). It ran +/- 0.0 s/d in that time! Yes, it's a little bigger than most of my collection, but that just helps with legibility since it's a 3-register watch.
Oh, and I've no damage to the sapphire... in fact, I love that the tachymeter is protected by the crystal unlike the exposed aluminum bezels on the Speedmaster of yesteryear.

One of my favourite watches, looks like it's 3 or 4 times more expensive than what it is. The dial detail is to die for, and the 262khz tuning fork quartz is lethally accurate. Also, a proper strap monster too on different straps. Got 7.5 inch wrists and can get away with wearing it.

It is a fantastic watch! It honestly didn't look bad at all on your wrist... But we all have a preference about how a watch "feels" on wrist and our perception of it at the distal point of our arm. The velcro Zulu does suit the watch well, as they were made to wrap around the spacesuit, and I like that they included that touch (a bit shorter bracelet for those of us not in a pressurized space suit) in the kit for the owner. Nice review... and cheers to Bulova for creating such a nice reissue/homage of their original moon-walking timepiece! Bulova - excellent company. Lots of changes over the years, and they have got some great pieces, new and old. Some of their more premium vintage watches, dive and chrono, rivaled the big names back in the 60s and 70s for a fraction of the money. Let me know if you are selling this one, Jody, because I'll snatch it up in a heartbeat and slap it on my 7.5" wrist. :-) Keep up the good work, and take care. (BTW, have you entertained the idea of JODYSHOP to flip all the watches you go through? Just saying, it's an obvious but catchy idea... haha)

Thanks for the view… Watched it again as a sendoff from my Bulova lunar pilot. I have flipped it to a friend. The 52 mm lug to lug Was a dimension that was just not comfortable even on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. I purchased the watch because it has the ultra high precision quartz movement in it. It is horologically significant And I wish Bulova Would do that with all of the Chronograph’s. But they just keep putting a Rhonda quartz in them. If they make this watch with a 42/43 mm width with less than 50 mm lug to lug I would buy it again tomorrow

This watch broke all my rules for buying. I saw it in an IG post and just bought it without any research 3 years ago. It's the largest watch I own, and if I'm honest with myself (which I rarely am with this watch) it's too big for me. It has 6 or 7 straps of various comfort, the most of any of my watches. But I love it. I was worried I'd chip or break that box sapphire crystal, buy it's still as clean as the day I bought it. It's not going anywhere, unless Bulova releases a smaller model.

Yup, this watch is a beautiful monster. I don’t know why Bulova made many of their reissues so large. I had their Stars and Stripes reissue that I tried so hard to love, but it turned out to be a monster on the wrist and I sold it. I recommend the Accutron II. I have one and it is in a much more reasonable case size, has the same VHF chronograph movement, and comes in for less money. Yeah, it’s not the “Space Watch” but this Bulova really is a homage to their own original, unlike the Speedy which retains its true provenance to this day. Great review Jody and terrific shirt too.

Picked one up on Prime Day for a good price. Yes, it is big, but I find it wears well on my 6.5" wrist.
I think the issue is Bulovas high frequency movements are big to start. Look at their precisionist and Accutron II watches. I don't think any of them are below 41mm.
I put mine on a watch steward elastic nylon. Got one of their original mishap straps and love the combo.

Don't be afraid of the size, it wears smaller than a few of my 42mm divers, on my 17 cm wrist. What seems to help too, I have the bracelet version (different lug holes) and put it on a sleak strap. As for your strap quest, Jody, I think, after a few experiments, that it looks best on, indeed, an aftermarket black carbon fiber pattern or a thin Nato in silver-red-black: space going colors! With love from Belgium ;-)
