6 hours ago I was your Atypical listener of music, but now, when I came up and out of the rabbit hole, I think I should be given an Honorary Doctorate!
But for real, after watching Sam, and now You and Sam, and your past relationship as student/teacher, and the respect you have for one another as colleagues, but more so, the passion for singing. As I and others have said, It is a great experience watching a pro discuss and educate another about their craft. It would be like me reacting to eating Ice Cream.! Bada Bum! PEACE!!

I was so surprised when you pointed out that they were singing the same notes because the qualities of their voices are so different from each other, it didnt sound the same to me at all! Then again, I’m not known for my pitch or hearing so this may not have surprised anyone but me 😂😂😂

    • @SamJohnsonVoice
      @SamJohnsonVoice  5 лет назад +17

Timbre is huge for pitch perception !

    • @ChristoAbrie
      @ChristoAbrie 5 лет назад +5

@@SamJohnsonVoice it's the same with the difference between male and female voices. For instance, if you compare Pavarotti to Katherine Jenkins. Their respective vocal ranges over-lap but the quality of their voice remains distinct, with Katherine focusing on the heavier sound at the back of the throat while Pav does his thing in his "head-voice", at least that's how you can look at it when their singing the same note. I feel that even though Opera isn't quite as in demand compared to today's music, it lays a good foundation for what your singing voice can do if trained properly. You can go off into your own different style once you learn how to use your voice and Opera/classical techniques are the best way to learn it how to explore your voice. People just need to realize that just because you trained your voice like that doesn't mean you have to sing like that in profession. Look at Mariah Carey, her mother is an opera singer, yet despite her opera-like training, she doesn't use an opera-voice when she sings, but she incorporates some opera techniques in her singing.

I started singing lessons in the 10th grade (now in my senior year of college) and I feel like obsessing over resonance space because that's what I was taught to really had me running around my voice in circles all the way up until like now. I literally didn't realize to what degree singing was like talking until this year and I FINALLY like my voice

italian part translated in english and the complete lyrics below
Pavarotti: Man chases power but he doesn't know
that the great limit has to be how it will be done.
In the palm he holds an idea
    who does not live,
that in his fantasy… he wanted
if you don't notice that then
    nothing makes sense anymore if
    one lives only for oneself.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    It's a Man's Man's Man's World lyrics
Artist: Luciano Pavarotti •Featuring artist: James Brown
    Album: Pavarotti & Friends
Brown: This is a man's world, this is a man's world and
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing, nothing
Without a woman or a girl
You see, man made the cars
To take us over the road
    Man made the trains
    To carry heavy loads
    Man made electric lights
To take us out of the dark
And man made the boat for the water,
Like my bible says Noah made the ark
    This is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing, nothing
Without a woman or a girl
Brown: Man thinks about a little bitty baby girl
    And a baby boy
    Man makes then happy
    Because man makes them toys
And after man made other things he can
Man makes liras, pesos, dollars, rupees
To buy for every good woman and every man
    This is a man's world,
Pavarotti: Nulla ha piú senso se
    si vive solo per sé.
Brown: But it wouldn't be nothing,
Without a woman or a girl.
    Pavarotti: Solo per sé.
Brown: He's lost in the wilderness,
    He's lost in bitterness.
Pavarotti: Se non si accorge che poi
    nulla ha piú senso se
    si vive solo per sé,
    solo per sé, per sé.
Brown: This is a man's world, yeah.

I'd love to see you react to more songs in languages other than English and Korean! During your explanation of how you like singing that sounds like speaking I couldn't help but to think of a Dutch singer Herman van Veen. His songs always remind me more of a grandfather telling a sweet bedtime story than something sing-songy (not sure that's a word). His best known song is called Anne and my own favourite is Het Dorp. They aren't very flashy songs so I don't know if they'd make a good video for on RUclips, but I thought you might enjoy his style of music.

ALthough I need to point out that you missed the best moment of that, which is how James works with the mic when he does the "train" echo ;P

When Brown sings "train", he makes it sound like a fading train.

I began my musical theatre training as a dancer. “Placement” gave me tension and limited my quality and range. It wasn’t until I learned from other perspectives that I learnt to use my whole voice.

You should take a look at the Pavarotti and BB king performance! Also, I’d like to see a reaction to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Copeland doing Tin Pan Alley. Blues, baby!!

I love Pavarotti, but when I hear the words “true tenor”, I hear Bocelli. Probably because I was brought up on him more then the former. But all honors to Pavarotti for being THE original tenor.

    Hi Sam!
I love your videos! I was thinking it would be cool to see you react to Type O Negative! The singer has a cool voice and I'd love to hear your analysis of it! Wolfmoon (live) could be a good video to watch!!

Pavarotti always said he wouldn't go for throat or head support, but gut. But yeah, clearly, as he got older he had to shift things.
