Thanks for having me on your channel Sam! Always fun! ... I think this is by far one of my favorite videos we have talked about though! Excellent choice!
6 hours ago I was your Atypical listener of music, but now, when I came up and out of the rabbit hole, I think I should be given an Honorary Doctorate! But for real, after watching Sam, and now You and Sam, and your past relationship as student/teacher, and the respect you have for one another as colleagues, but more so, the passion for singing. As I and others have said, It is a great experience watching a pro discuss and educate another about their craft. It would be like me reacting to eating Ice Cream.! Bada Bum! PEACE!!
Omg, same. That’s why I also love those WIRED videos where experts break down how stuff is in real life vs. in tv and movies. Especially the dialect coach guy. That dude is my favorite.
I learn so much on music with Sam but when it’s time for me to sing I can’t even find the right note and I start thinking about my pronounciation and how I’m bad 😂 so for me it seems impossible but continue to enjoy listening Sam 😊 sorry I’m french 👏
I was so surprised when you pointed out that they were singing the same notes because the qualities of their voices are so different from each other, it didnt sound the same to me at all! Then again, I’m not known for my pitch or hearing so this may not have surprised anyone but me 😂😂😂
@@SamJohnsonVoice it's the same with the difference between male and female voices. For instance, if you compare Pavarotti to Katherine Jenkins. Their respective vocal ranges over-lap but the quality of their voice remains distinct, with Katherine focusing on the heavier sound at the back of the throat while Pav does his thing in his "head-voice", at least that's how you can look at it when their singing the same note. I feel that even though Opera isn't quite as in demand compared to today's music, it lays a good foundation for what your singing voice can do if trained properly. You can go off into your own different style once you learn how to use your voice and Opera/classical techniques are the best way to learn it how to explore your voice. People just need to realize that just because you trained your voice like that doesn't mean you have to sing like that in profession. Look at Mariah Carey, her mother is an opera singer, yet despite her opera-like training, she doesn't use an opera-voice when she sings, but she incorporates some opera techniques in her singing.
2 Legends! + 2 Genres!= Amazing! 2 Voice Teachers + 2 Analyzing techniques = 2 great dudes who share fun, informative, geniune thoughts and tips. Thank you Sam and Mark
Oh. My. God! This duet is in my top three duets of all time!!!! Beyond their outstanding voices, stage presence and general amazingness, the two music styles and two voices are complementing eachother in a fabulous, fabulous eargams❤️ Thanks for this reaction, it made my day!
Yes! I sing opera and for a long time I would overthink that I had to put all this physical effort into it. My current teacher and Sam’s teaching has taught me to relax and my voice has improved because there is a lot less tension. And now things are easier to do!
I'd love to see you doing a comparison video of the different voice types such as tenors altos, sopranos, etc., and just showing us different people singing in those ranges.
My wife and I love you and your videos, Sam! Loved the collab between you and your fellow vocal coach. We were just watching this duet the other day and it's a thing of beauty.
i think the difference for me is i love James browns incredible soul voice and when i hear him i think about the history of that genre and what an amazing talent he was, and when i hear Pavarotti i think how does someone use their voice to do that. I am bricklayer with tattoos and i look like a rough dude and liking operatic music is the uncoolist thing imaginable but i find myself sharing my love for Pavarotti with whoever will listen because i dont want anyone to miss out on the most amazing experience that i stumbled apon. thanks for the vid
U R proof....never judge a book by its cover. I look like someone's old grandma ( I am 😁) but i can still dance like NO ONE Is watching....and idc if they are. Inside I'm still that 18 year old i was in 1975, loving R&B, 40s jazz, folk, country, rock and roll, showtunes, opera and classical. Lol i just discovered earbuds and the pristine sound they produce. Im reliving my youth and enjoying the ride more than the 1st time i made the trip. Life is good.
That's one of my favourite performances of all time. So cool to see you talking about it ;) And I really like the guest format, it's a nice refreshment ;)
Such a good video! A perfect way of showing the similarity between different styles and the difference. And that they aren't that many! I love these discussions!
One of the reasons I love Pavarotti is the concerts he did with non-opera singers, because he did them so very well. Music is music, and genres are just details. Speaking of Pavarotti, can we talk you into analyzing Caruso live?
Wow!!! LOVE THIS❤️❤️❤️ Maybe my favorite video too! Pavarotti and James Brown - Wow! The two of you - Incredible! Of course, Sam you always make my day better🥰
I really enjoy listening to your reactions and analysis of various singers, it's very interesting to someone who isn't musically inclined. I've been very into listening to VoicePlay lately and would love to hear your analysis of them, especially to Queen in 5 min.
This music has the power of which the material of the universe is made, the top! great video thanks for publishing and commenting Pavarotti and James B. play enchanting melodies perfectly adapted to a symphony orchestra, all this bellissimo
I can never un-hear the flavor Pavarotti added to this song. It has a different spirit that's dragging out what one usually knows how it should be sang and the basis is always the James Brown way. Pavarotti was rich and strong. Can't believe I'm only watching this now.
What I love about these videos is how I am starting to understand why I enjoy some singers over others, even though they all may be excellent singers. I think for me, technical perfection makes a singer, passion makes an artist. How passion is controlled determines if i like it or not....if that makes sense.
Thank you... For a while, I explored opera on RUclips, and I was very depressed to see the comments, that to a large extent consisted of "this singer is utter crap/has no technique whatsoever" - and the more successful the singer, the harsher the comments. It's strange to me that people who relish such beautiful music enjoys that kind of... bullying, frankly
"What's the difference between singing and talking?" As Buddy the Elf put it, "Singing is talking except longer and louder and you move your voice up and down a lot." lol
Yo what you said about placement is so spot on. I started singing lessons in the 10th grade (now in my senior year of college) and I feel like obsessing over resonance space because that's what I was taught to really had me running around my voice in circles all the way up until like now. I literally didn't realize to what degree singing was like talking until this year and I FINALLY like my voice

Learn so much from you guys!
they got on my nerves talking all over Pavarotti and James brown Why don`t they shut up.
What's crazy is that pavarroti had full blown cancer when this was recorded that's why he was sitting. He was Ill but he still killed it
I had been wondering why he chose to sit. That explains it.
He did this several times in the last few years of his life. Perhaps there were other health issues involved - Bless you for noticing this sweet Chloe
I didn't realise he had already been diagnosed, I assumed he was sitting down because of his weight
Makes you think eh. They were both dead within 3 years.
Yo must be musical teachers to knew a lot about powerful song. How about Sam cookie... Change gona come track
Once, James was criticized for screaming. His response? "I scream on key". Worked out pretty well.
And now we have an entire sub genre called "scremo" lol
Lmao that's pretty iconic.
Random Fact - The scream thing was started by Little Richard
@@Lsdlsadmt James masters it.

I, too, always pronounce Pavarotti’s name with the utmost Italian diligence.
same lol
And Andrea Boccelli, Gherighou, and Bartoli. 😎
And, being Italian, I do respect you for that.
Same, but I do it for Chef Boyardee

"We have tenors who actually sound like tenors". I LOVE your videos. You + Pavorotti. = gold.
Really nice editing, even cutting the sound sometimes to make the other person's point easier to hear/understand. Nice. :)
I saw Pavarotti live about 24 years ago when I was in high school. He was amazing.
I have learned a lot from watching your videos, but I still sound like a cat being tortured
Put the right music behind it and any voice can work.
You and many of us too 😂🤣😭

I can’t imagine someone saying that women singing in chest voice is wrong in a world where YEBBA exists
People seem to forget that before the 1970s majority of the stuff below A4, even for the highest sopranos was done in chest voice.

I needed a dose of your energy tonight.
That sounds good, Congratulations by Brasil

che il grande limite ha da essere come si fará.
Nel palmo stringe un ‘idea
che non vive,
che nella sua fantasia… volle
se non si accorge che poi
nulla ha piú senso se
si vive solo per sé.
Pavarotti: Man chases power but he doesn't know
that the great limit has to be how it will be done.

It's a Man's Man's Man's World lyrics
Artist: Luciano Pavarotti •Featuring artist: James Brown
Album: Pavarotti & Friends
Brown: This is a man's world, this is a man's world and
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing, nothing
Without a woman or a girl
You see, man made the cars
To take us over the road
Man made the trains
To carry heavy loads
Man made electric lights
To take us out of the dark
And man made the boat for the water,
Like my bible says Noah made the ark
This is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing, nothing
Without a woman or a girl
Brown: Man thinks about a little bitty baby girl
And a baby boy
Man makes then happy
Because man makes them toys
And after man made other things he can
Man makes liras, pesos, dollars, rupees
To buy for every good woman and every man
This is a man's world,
Pavarotti: Nulla ha piú senso se
si vive solo per sé.
Brown: But it wouldn't be nothing,
Without a woman or a girl.
Pavarotti: Solo per sé.
Brown: He's lost in the wilderness,
He's lost in bitterness.
Pavarotti: Se non si accorge che poi
nulla ha piú senso se
si vive solo per sé,
solo per sé, per sé.
Brown: This is a man's world, yeah.

I think about this performance all the time
Pavarotti and Friends was the best thing ever...
Could you look at the night queen aria from the Magic Flute Opera - id be so interested to know how she hits those notes with ease ,
Thankyou! :)
ALthough I need to point out that you missed the best moment of that, which is how James works with the mic when he does the "train" echo ;P
When Brown sings "train", he makes it sound like a fading train.

Pavarotti always said he wouldn't go for throat or head support, but gut. But yeah, clearly, as he got older he had to shift things.
