      @@daverockwell1996 of course it was positive. i didn't get he was on cocaine for the first part of his career until i was an adult, which explained a lot of the crazy live performances, but his natural energy and unequaled improvisational outbursts is what i was attracted to. plus Hook is the best Peter Pan story ever.

    It's pretty amazing that in the last 40 years the general consensus has been that every republican president was considered an idiot by the majority of Americans.
    This joke and others like it wouldn't have worked if that's not what the people were thinking at the time based on real time observations.

    • @bradyj55
      @bradyj55 3 года назад +3

      its a good point but completely ignores the fact that evey program has a viewer demographic and those demographics vary based on a number of things such as subject matter, setting, characters and time slots. SNL and most sketch comedy has a fairly left leaning viewer demographic in the age ranges of about 30-40 and the producers of these programs tend to know that and cater their content towards it a little.
      Its like how CNN had less viewership than HGTV a couple years ago. You'd think every American was on the same page because the same stories get repeated through a majority of the news networks and its all you see on TV but the reality is viewership is relatively small compared to even cartoon networks and is continuing to drop so television is not a good indicator of American sentiments towards politics. Elections however are really good indicators but even those can be misleading. 2016 for example when trump won but still lost the popular vote by about 3 million when the reality is that pretty much all of those votes came from new york and California so great indicators of how those states feel but the rest of the country didagreed for the most part. A couple cities shouldn't be able to decide elections just like how a television show should not be used to gage how people feel politically.

    • @eferg16
      @eferg16 3 года назад

      @@bradyj55 Excellent point.
      I'd still argue that, for a national show and comedy in general, the premise of a joke relies on a shared reality that subverts assumed expectations. That's why jokes work.
      I liked your examples of ratings, viewership, and elections. Interesting bits I should have factored in.
      Thank you for your insight. Gave me something to think about.
