2 Reasons Why You Shank Your Chip Shots (Golf Shanks)

- If you are struggling with the dreaded golf shank shot on your chip shots, the fix is probably much easier than you think.
Just by looking at two major culprits for shanking your chip shots will help you not only diagnose the cause of shanking chip shots, but also help you find a solution to this nasty golf shot. Plus a simple chipping drill to help you fix that nasty golf shank shot once and for all!
1. Golf Club handle position - if you have the handle of the club too far forward, you start to expose the heel of the golf club, which could be the reason why you struggle with golf shanks
2. Golf swing motion - if you start to drag the club inside on your takeaway to start your golf backswing, chances are you have struggled with shanking your chip shots. Instead, make sure your golf takeaway starts relatively straight back, and your golf downswing is straight through impact.

Are you making one of these 3 Common Chipping Mistakes?
• 3 Big Chipping Mistake...
I am 9 handicapper. Lately I have been shanking my shots with 60 degree wedge including chipping and pitching. Last Saturday round, I shot 99 with record setting of 7 shanks around the green. Chipping and putting have been my bread and butter for my game. Of course not only lost tons of money to friends but lost my dignity. So came home with indignation of defeat, I searched for the answer. Came up with this video which made sense. After watching it, practiced with my 54 degree wedge in house. (Just empty swing without hitting the ball). Next morning went to my club and practice this chipping swing but I also incorporated the whole swing with this concept. Cha ching... shot 77 with 3 birdies. Had great drive and approach shots. Zero shank. It was a great awakening on not only chipping but my whole swing as well. Much appreciated your instructions
Kyong Kim wow! So happy for you...this is an all time great post...anytime we can help our fellow golfers it is a good day...hope you subscribed, more great content to come. 👊
I am in the same exact boat! I’m a 8 hcp and the last few rounds I had the potential to shoot in the 70s but I shanked and bladed so many simple chips that could have led to pars and a couple of birdies... I went and practiced this drill and finally got it dialed back in. It’s frustrating because my driving and iron play is at its best right now, it’s always something! Crazy game we play.
Having the same problem at the moment 13 handicap at peak, can’t stop shanking my 60 degree wedge which, like you was one of my bread and butter shots, just hit 97 with about 10 shanks, hoping this works for me 🤞🏻
Bro same..I am a 12 handicap and I’ve been shanking the fuck outta my wedges….shit is so annoying ..its in my head now
When he removed the alignment stick he put the ball about an inch inside of where the alignment sick had been. Is the ball supposed to stay on that same line as the alignment stick or do you move it a bit inside
The ABSOLUTE best video!!! Thank you!!!!
My iron game is good enough for me to score in the 70s and 80s, but something happened overnight and I couldn't chip at all without the 'shank'. I kept jokingly telling my group that I was just "fooling around" or "trying some things", when in reality, I had 'the yips' and scoring a "6" on easy par 4s.
I feared any shot between 1 - 45 yards.
This video cured me within an hour. Very much appreciated.
Moe98 this is why we do what we do...awesome! Thanks for sharing... 👊
That is the absolute BEST solution video I have ever seen!! I have been shanking my chips for years. SO glad you posted this video! I went directly outside to apply these techniques... problem solved. Thanks again!!!!!!
Thanks for Taking the time to discuss this. I shank my 58 degree wedge when I open club up. I haven’t been able to find a good video yet about this until yours now. thank you!
Wow! Thanks for this.. I did countless searches to fix this issue and somehow I never saw your video. I just spent an hour trying to figure it out in mirrors and stuff and nothing worked.. And when you don't hit many GIRs, having the chipping shanks is a killer!! I just did your drill and I couldn't hit a single shank! Thank you very much. The real test will be on the course tomorrow.. I'll definitely be subscribing!
Awesome news, glad we could help! Thanks for subscribing, more great content is on the way!
5 handicapper that developed shanks. Sometimes on the range I would shank by far the majority of short distance swings-especially lob shots. Started scoring in mid 80's. Watched this video and have had one shank in 7 rounds (I could tell I was way inside on my backswing and hands forward). No more shanks on the driving range. Great information in this video. Awesome results!
Great story, this made our day....thank you for sharing your story...keep up the great work.
First guy to teach this correctly. 👍. Thank you
Thank you. Chipping is one of our favorite topics to discuss.
I was stymied on why I was shanking Ball after ball after hitting a bunch great at first and then couldn't stop. I was just about to have an aneurysm and I watched this video again, thanks for straightening me out. Plus I'm doing it on the course and now at least I know what I'm doing to correct it.
Post of the day here! Progress 👊 Thanks for sharing your experience.
Just watched this, as I’ve been shanking whilst practising in the back yard, turns out I was holding club too far forward, now chipping with confidence instead of fear, great video, thanks, I’ve just subscribed
Very good, simple instruction thank you
Thanks, thanks, thanks and thank you. Exactly my shanking swing of forward press and flip inside. 8, 9 or 10 shanks a round.
Since watching this I've played 2 rounds and nothing approaching a shank. Balls from centre of face.... LIFE SAVER!
Glad it helped, be sure to subscribe for more great content!
Thank you for this very clear explanation… it has changed my chipping 🙌

Great video. My hands had crept too far forward and really struggled with shanks and bunker shots.
I play off a 9 and was leading our intermediate club champs with 1 round left due to good ball striking but couldn't get up and down due to my short game which tends to be plagued by yipping. I decided to change to the claw grip (I use this for putting) for chipping/short pitches for the final round. During a practice round the claw grip worked great until I shanked 6 pitches in a row. Needless to say, I was horrified. I came home and watched this and it made sense. With the claw grip, I started pushing my hands too far forward. I also made sure I wasn't coming inside too much. The result was immediate and I went on to win the club champs by 5 shots and followed that up with the matchplay title. Thanks so much for your advice.
Awesome! Your story is why we do this...be sure to keep us posted.
I walk holes or hit balls most evenings and play once or twice a week. Tonight I focused solely on playing from 100 yards. Took two clubs and a putter and played 4 balls each “round”. I always end with putting drills. I’ve found that having some kind of focus point on my evening walk has helped me become more consistent than just walking 6 or 7 holes. I’m making better contact and have reduced my “bad” shots tremendously by trying to have a game plan during my practice time.
Thanks for the tips. My shanks have got so bad I have been putting from 30 yards from the edge of the green to avoid it happening.
Glad to help!
It’s tough to find this addressed so I appreciate the video. Not sure if I’m shanking because it feels like it’s coming off the toe but definitely going to try this drill this week and see if it works.
Nothing worse than this creeping into the game. Makes the game unplayable even casually because you know you can’t do anything when you get around the green.
I'm playing off 18 so not too many expectations when I play but I've been shanking so much lately I've been throwing away at least 6-7 shots per round. I've just seen this video, gone into the garden and hit 30 shots and not shanked one. I can't believe how simple this fix is. I've been dreading my next game, now I can't wait to play again to try this on the course. Thank you.
Andrew, this is awesome! Appreciate the kind words, hope you subscribed. 👊

Another good tip for anyone that wants it. If you wrist hinge for chip shots ensure you’re wrist hinging correctly (roughly 30-45° angle to the right for right handed golfer) I found myself hinging at a sort of 90° angle and then this causes the club to get behind you. I always had a decent short game and my swing felt the exact same when shanking it so was hard to figure this out , I assure you if you just keep the club head in front of your body the shanks will stop immediately (as demonstrated in this video)
I've started shanking chip shots lately so will try this and look for the 2 potential causes. Thanks !!! 👍
Harry Lawrence you got it...be sure to report back and let us know if the tips work...best of luck. 👊
Top notch as always. Thanks Todd
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant video.
I was doing the exact same thing Today on the range hands to far forward plus the swing.
Good stuff, leaning and making progress 👍
Cheers… had a bout of this today and all of this makes sense
Back on track....
Thank you for this advice. I had never previously considered this could be my problem.
Thanks. I have my full swing under control, but seemed to get the "shanks" with PW. This drill fixed it right away! Thanks.
Awesome! Progress 👊
GREAT lesson here!
Great instructions Thanks will apply this immediately 👍👍
Awesome! Time for more up and downs my friend 👊
I would like to suggest another remedy, which has helped me a lot. At address, keep the right elbow touching the right hip and keep it there during the backswing. There is no way to shank doing this, because the path of the club remains absolutely constant. Hope this helps someone!
I can’t shank from this position. Trust me. 🤦🏻♂️
I mean I CAN
Thanks so much, for whatever reason I just started doing. Your information was very helpful

Our pleasure, have you seen this video we did on chipping ruclips.net/video/cPKegp7JeYk/видео.htmlsi=OilpNj1FoiMnlB0Y
Great video. I was shanking some balls today when I was practicing my chip shots. It was very frustrating. It got better when I didn’t put too much forward lean on the shaft and used more of a putting stroke but I couldn’t chip it too far. I see you had a slight hinge on the backswing and went further back on the backswing. I will use your tip technique and I’m sure it will cure my shank prone chipping.
Progress 👊 Thanks for posting
At some point when chipping I started to try keeping the club face square on the back swing, just recently I noticed this is why I also started shanking my chip shots. Once I realized this may be the reason for the shanks I made an effort to let the club naturally turn on the back swing, no more shanks!
Progress! Good for you.
Would you do a video on how to open up a wedge and how to grip club after? Thanks.
I happen to do both 🤣 I had 2 birdies and my first eagle last Sunday. Thanks to 2 shanks I also had 2 double bogey's. Thanks for the great advice!
Shank you very much. I shall take this info to my next round☺️
LOL, you got it.
I also noticed a good practice drill for me was chipping without choking up on the club i typically like to choke up to chip and have been shanking like crazy on certain turf. Chipping with the full length of the club helped me feel the face better before choking up for better accuracy
Interesting, thanks for adding to the discussion…
Excellent
Great lesson!👍

This just happened to me for the first time in my life today and I went a little insane.
I don't shank much but what a great video!
Tee drill got my chipping back on track! Best drill for chipping. How about a lands in a Divet? Just put it more vac and your stance
Great question, yes. Anytime the lie is “bad” move the ball back slightly. This goes for divots, deep rough or uneven lies. 👊
I wonder if keeping my hands/arms too passive going forward has the same effect as too much shaft lean? If I get aggressive with my hands I never shank.
You are not alone.
Hello Todd Mike here from Oregon. Might be a dumb question but do you use the same thought process on ball position when hitting a hybrid club vs the irons I do have in my bag? Great video always enjoy them.
Here is a good place to start ruclips.net/video/ipPUiGTwLMg/видео.html
When I get nervous in a big match I notice myself doing this. I try to go a little more outside in and that fixes it but I lose my confidence. I know that I try to get my hands forward. Maybe this is contributing this too? I'll watch the hands. I'm usually a good chipper and then the dreaded S-word comes out. Thanks for the tip!!!
You bet Bill, let us know if it helps!
I used to be money with my short chip shots, and now all of a sudden I’ve been shanking them straight right like 50% of the time. Thanks for the video! I think I do have my hands too far forward. Will try this drill tomorrow.
PL Golf yes, the handle too far forward can cause that shot. Be sure to let us know how it goes. 👊
I am in the same boat. If I have to chip or pitch the ball I am a nervous wreck all of a Sudden. This game is killing. I’ll try this drill tomorrow
Wish I had seen this at the beginning of the season. I had to use regular chipping videos to figure out the cause of my shanking half of my chips. I now have a set-up drill that makes sure I am not too close to the ball, that I take the clubhead "straight" back (yes with a little arc but not severely back & inside). and that I take a practice swing to make sure where my club is grounding out (I adjust if it doesn't bottom out towards the middle of the ball). Took most of the season to sort it out but now I hardly ever shank my chip shots. Now I have to work on chips that are short-sided from deep rough. Those are painful.
Mark V awesome that you found our channel and an answer to those dreaded shanks....the simple straight back and straight through drill works wonders...more great content to come.
Also just recently developed a "shank" whilst chipping. Couldn't figure out why, especially since short game has saved me for the longest. Two things I noticed were addressing the ball too closely and hitting with the heel, also having my wrists too loose and they weren't coming around in time.
Yep, thanks for sharing.
I don’t know if it’s common knowledge but I just learned from this vid a shank is hitting off the hozzle. I’ve been popping chips off to the left(lefty) and thought my face was somehow open even if my hands felt otherwise. I was so confused lol. This video gave me the epiphany I needed
Awesome, glad we can help! We have a full chapter in our book THE BAD LIE on chipping that provides more details. See here if interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
Where have you been all these years. Thank You.
LOL, you found us now. 👊
I've been on a nine month layoff from golf because of covid. Courses reopened last month, and now I'm shanking chip and pitch shots (which used to be a strong part of my game). Can't for the life of me figure out wtf is going on, so now I'm going to give this a try. I hate this game.
This will help...rest assured. Be sure to let us know how it goes.
great video thanks. I think I have discovered that my chip shank comes from handle to far forward and not turning the upper body. standing like a statue and swinging the arms
I successfully use a strong grip for nearly all my clubs, but maybe I shouldn’t here because I shank all of my chipshots with my wedges. Therefore I bought myself a chipper which goes straight all the time. Should I use the same swing tecnique as I do with the chipper?
Sometimes I have to go over a lake or a bunker and stop the ball on the green.
relaxed hands and swing it through.
tensed grip or deceleration causes a shank.
kar wye ng very true...tension is a killer of many shots in golf.
Think that's my issue.Nothing like a shank to tighten up your wrists.
This will save me some strokes, my hands were way ahead of the ball. I embarrassed myself so many times last season, my only fix was playing my chips off the toe.

Thank you so much, this problem ruined my last round.
You got it. What other topics would you like to see us cover?
I have been fighting shanks for years. At one point, I bought 3 sets of clubs to cure it. I have been a 7 HCP, now a 16. I am again fighting shanks on every iron. I am convinced that my shanks are caused by sliding my hips on my downswing. I have an inside swing path and the hip slide prevents the club from squaring. Strangely enough, I am pretty straight with all my woods and hybrids. Why am I sliding my hips on iron shots? I have fought this for 15 years and it has gotten significantly worse this year with 2 heart and 1 back surgery.
Good question, try taking your lead foot and pointing it out towards the target side slightly. This will help you rotate your hips vs slide...
@@USGOLFTVshow Thank you. Will try anything!!! Playing tomorrow and will try it. BTW, your videos are most helpful to my wife. She has been "hitting up on the ball" and your video on hitting down was perfect for her.
Great explanation and a nice little drill👍
P dashs sometimes the simple things work the best! Thanks for posting
I've always been fairly proficient at chipping; however, my full swing tends to be out to in with a slice. I've recently gone to the range multiple times, working on my full swing. After improving some, I went to practice chipping and could not get the ball in the air to save me life. The harder I tried, the worse I got. I was astounded as to what was happening. These rightward shanks have lasted for about a week. After watching this video, I'm hoping its just the I was inadvertently bringing my club too far inside on my chip. Is this a common issue, as somebody improves their full swing path, their chipping worsens? Thanks for the help!
Thanks for asking. Yes, these shots can come and go at times. We typically see the cause come from what is covered in this video. Be sure to report back and let us know how it goes.
I’m doing this on wedge shots too... Could it be from slowing down mid swing and trying to adjust distance mid swing?
Tempo in chip shots and pitching is a key to quality shots. Try hitting a few shots balancing on your lead foot only.
Hi Todd ,
I need your help I am on the fairway about 50 to 60 mm from the green and I shank the ball
We have a couple great videos on the shank. Check them out.

Todd, my statistics is that the majority of my shanked chips have been uphill chips. What do you think of that? - from Kolkata, India.
Watch this, it will help answer your questions ruclips.net/video/c01goxM6rkE/видео.htmlsi=yGngnKGwI0bCC4l6
I figured out I wasn't rotating my hips on pitches over 15 yards and it was causing me to hit it off the hozzle. As soon as i started rotating my hips during the shot it fixed the issue.
Taylor Larrabee awesome! The best part is you are finding what works best for you...this is the key 🔑! Thanks for posting 👊
You got it taylor.. don't know why I'd stopped turning hips through but once I did problem sorted.
Hope it works for the tournament tomorrow.

Hi. The text is obscuring the ball position. Not sure how to change the image?
Hi Selwyn, are you talking about the captions? You should be able to turn them off by hitting the "CC" in the bottom corner of the video. Hope that helps!
A good drill as well is to place 2 golf balls down about golf ball width apart. One nearest to your feet which is the ball you chip. The other ball farrher from your feet. Chip the nearer ball without hitting farther ball. Not bad.
Thanks for adding to the conversation...good stuff.
Jesus Christ is Lord, King and Our Savior!
I’ve been shanking so bad around the greens, I practiced today and come to believe that I’m standing to close to the ball and my weight on my toes
In my experience standing too close to the ball or weight on the toes also cause it.
Got to try this tomorrow. I shanked two (omigod if I were honest I would say three) chips today after some beautifully very long fairway shots - totally ruining hitting the green for a possible par og bogey (which is good for me). I also waffled a sand shot. Indeed, how did I manage that one?? Good grief. Taking refuge and solice here.
You got this!!! Be sure to let us know how it goes.
@@USGOLFTVshow Hum... still an occassional shank and not the most controlled chips or pitches. But practice makes perfect ... I hope. Season ending much too soon here in the Cold North!
How about left handed lessons ? Thanks
This shot kills me.Yesterday I was on the fringe of a Par 5 for 2 then bam shank ,came off with a 6. I use a little old bladed sand wedge and open it up for these shots. chipped in for a birdie off the fringe on an earlier hole with the same club. I do it most on tight lies and feel like I haven't really released it / or come up on it an inch /or am turning the club and body together instead of swinging club. I've always take the club out to in on this shot with a lot of success but then i have weeks/months when it kills me.
Joe Mann give these ideas a try, they will help! Best of luck 👊
@@USGOLFTVshow Had a chance to practice today and for me it was due to not rotating my hips ,even on delicate little flop and chip shots. Thanks to Taylor Larrabee (below).
I occasionally will Shank my chips and found that my problem was that I was all arms and not turning the hips. If I shank a chip, I now know to concentrate on turning the hips and no shanks.
Awesome! You found the answer...
It's weird when I first go to the driving range i chip fine. 10 minutes later I'm shanking everything. I'll try this
Also suggest watching this ruclips.net/video/GcOUunxpz-g/видео.htmlsi=p3ecVQYL-OnHhKLk
Anybody else noticing you shank off different turf? My practice area has a tight lie i have no problems with, but there's this other turf they treat with sand that i can't hit a half swing wedge if my life depended on it
Great point, the turf conditions can have a huge impact on this. Mats for example can be a challenge for some golfers…
I have fixed my short chip shanks for the most part. I’ve gone to a pretty stiff arm shipping technique similar to maybe a Steve Stricker. It seems to work very well although it looks kind of awkward. My issue is the 50 yard shot. Every once in a while I’ll just shank it straight right. Any tips on how to avoid the 50 yard shank shot. I never do it with any other irons further out.
JJ G good question, be sure the clubhead is not going too far around your body, this is a common reason for the shank on pitch shots...hope that helps.
Please explain why a person can chip/ pitch at a respectable level , then one day you can't chip a 2 footer ??
Well, that is part of what makes golf great yet frustrating! Stick to good solid fundamentals and you will see less ups and downs in your game...thanks for posting.
Been shaking chips to the right for 2 years now. Kills your golf game big time. Then it gets into.your head. Its like I would rather be 100 yards out instead of right off the green.
Hope this video helps. You can also check out our book, The Bad Lie as we have an entire chapter on this topic www.badliegolfbook.com/
My worst nightmare through 5-6 years. And now it is a curse.
Its 2022 and I to am shanking my wedges
Don’t jerk. Boom fixed.
Bowling
I don't understand ask Phil Mickelson about leaning that shaft for chipping don't look like he is shanking , there are two ways of chipping neutral using the bounce or shaft lean chipping
You speak many truths here. Our only request is to give these concepts a try and see for yourself.
Didn't work for me. I started shanking about a month ago...no instruction in the world can help me. It's destroyed my game after 35 years of playing. Actually thinking of giving the game up👎
Don’t give up! There is always hope, try feeling like you are making more of a putting motion. That has helped many of our players
Absolutely nothing works. I've paid money and had a professional scratching his head as to why it's happening. For some reason, with chipping, the club comes down about an inch outside of the address position. The only part solution is to deliberately try to miss the ball on the inside. Sometimes even that doesn't work. Nothing works
@@stevetheprogger1 Steve did you find a solution? I’m in a similar place at the moment. Had lessons etc nothing working
@@jamesstewart8323 hi James
I'm an 18 handicapper, and I'm getting on in years, hence I sometimes have to think of a variation on the usual hints and tips I come across! For example, on a chip of... Say 20 yards, I set up/ line up, then turn my hands slightly clockwise to open the face. I take the club straight back ... Not too fast... On striking the ball I make sure I bring the club across the the ball to my left side. By doing this I have naturally squared the club face on impact. Works really well for me. Hope all goes well for you mate👍
alot of talking for no reason
annoying
