This first version of stardew valley is really similar to how harvest moon looks/plays like I'm glad that he continued with the game polished and created new mechanics

It’s really nice to see how he slowly went from being very heavily inspired by harvest moon, then he eventually began to evolve Stardew Valley into something completely new. :)
All this video tells me is that Seanie has never played Harvest Moon. The 9 tile seeds, digging for a ladder - gold standard 😂

Abigail's hair was originally blue? So THAT'S why Caroline complained about her daughter dyeing her hair blue when it's purple.
It went from black to green to blue to purple. Abigail's progression is really cool, it's almost like from "10 years old, normal-looking girl with a headband" to "15 years old, decides to dye her hair blue" to "20 years old, now a total rebel"

Reminds me of how Witcher games were inspired by Gothic games. I guess CA just recreated mechanics from the game he knew and liked and then worked from there made changes to mechanics and sprites and all. I don't know about his previous coding experience but if you're not really experienced, it makes sense to try and recreate things you've seen before and that you know how they are supposed to behave before going on and deciding how you'd like your own thing to be.
That wasn't Morris, that was the antagonist-type character that you had competed against to win the game essentially, but CA scrapped the idea

i know seanie isn't a game dev and clearly hasn't really watched many dev log type videos, so it's very funny hearing the comments about "why is he placing so many coops. DUDE YOU HAVE ENOUGH COOPS" or about him not doing any intros. that's just how game dev logs are man. it's early build documentation to show the mechanics working properly and showcase some features of the game very simply. huge game studios have the budget to make it some big extravagant thing but this is what i know and love from indie devs working on their own thing!
edit: i also saw a lot of people in the chat being very critical and harsh about the project demos, including one that said "bro is this an elementary school google slides presentation?" which i did wanna call out, cause it's really belittling to how much effort ConcernedApe must've put into these videos working as ONE MAN on this entire project

You're right, but this shouldn't be taken as critique, at least what Seanie said. As a content creator you point out things to talk about to talk about something, not really because it has actual value. View it a bit like watching sports and they describe what the players are doing, 99% of that is "unnecessary" and everyone can see it, but you got something to talk about and people not actively watching still know what's going on.
I only played the original release in 2017 for several months, got to year like 4 and maybe half a million/a million coins and then didn't play again until 1.5. So when I started playing that farm again I was like WHATS A SECRET NOTE, FISH POND, SIT IN CHAIRS, NEW HOUSE ROOMS, FISH TANKS, MOVIE THEATER, CO-OP lmao and also ginger island was crazy but it was so weird to just see all the kinda basic changes that I wish were in the original release. Now I'm on year 10 with many millions and it's even more fun than the original release. Definitely cool to see all CA's original original ideas. I kinda wish villagers could walk on your farm as long as they didn't destroy things. Even if you had a stand by the entrance of your farm and you could find villagers there buying stuff you put there that would be cool.
Placing seeds at 2:06 is definitely from Harvest Moon. Edit: Also the mines at 10:00 are the same as in HM DS. You can really see CA really did use it as inspiration.

@@NoThankUBeQuiet The most recent game is from February 2021. It came to PC recently as well. The same company also released Rune Factory 5, a similar series, that came out last month.
Bokujou Monogatari (original Harvest Moon) decided to go with a different English translator and distributor. That's when they lost the right to use the name "Harvest Moon." It's now known as Story of Seasons and has been for a decade now. Any game you've seen since 2012 titled "Harvest Moon" is Natsume trying to profit off of their name. Do not give any money to Natsume!

It's SO Harvest Moon! God I'm so glad Concerned Ape developed his own style and the game became what we know and love!

wild strawberries often root and sprout on the ground. The biologically engineered ones typically have bushes while wilds won't.
We grew real strawberries and they grew in a bush-like plant
This makes me so glad I played Harvest Moon as a kid and could enjoy it for what it was back then. Looking at and playing Stardew Valley then going back to HM would be an absolute Experience and a half.
I tried to and you don't realize how many features are in Stardew until they're gone.
Seems like ConcernedApe took all of those videos down in the meantime... 😔 That's kinda sad because the masterpiece we now got evolved from those small beginnings. There's no need to be ashamed of how it looked like before. It's even more amazing to see how everything developed and turned out so amazing in the end!

The alpha looks VERY much like Harvest Moon, especially the old GBC and GBA games, its even clearer that he took inspiration from these, the mechanics are all one to one, the layout of the mines, the forages, the way the shipping bin and seeds work, etc.
I'm pretty sure wild strawberries do NOT grow on a bush, least not around here hahaha. They are totally foraged from the ground. Also, the nine seeds at once was probably a nod to story of seasons friends of mineral town, or one of the other earlier games from that series.
I guess it's cause the plant is called a strawberry bush in English. So guess the plant is similar to the fruit (strawberries = nuts, strawberry bush = herb). . . Man we butchered the naming of this plant.

Wild strawberries by my house grow on the ground alongside the grass
the old sprites have shading, but it is a lot more subtle. i prefer the new look, because they look more “brightly lit” due to the harsher shadow that simulates the brightest time of day

Was this recorded before the Friends of Mineral Town video? Because the things that surprised Seanie the most seemed to be the things that were more directly from FoMT, such as the 3x3 seed planting and the hoeing in the mine. Or did he just forget?

Oh wow, alpha Stardew Valley looks a lot more like classic Harvest Moon (known as Story of Seasons now). The 9 seeds thing started way back in SNES Harvest Moon mechanic.

You can do that in modern day stardew valley as well. Left click instead of right click and you'll put the entire stack of whatever you're holding in.

The mining seems more similar to harvest moon. I remember having to till the ground to dig in friends of mineral town
It seems like some things in earlier versions were more similar to things in harvest moon, like throwing 9 seeds in a 3x3 plot or the hoeing the ground in the mines to find a way down. Those were things that Harvest Moon games generally did. The fact that it was similar was what got me interested. Though I still wish it had it where time didn't move when you were inside buildings, and I wish you could stay up all night if you need to though you end up taking a hit on stamina the rest of the new day.

it Would be cool if the old version's of Stardew Valley were released to the public and the way to play them is to right click the game and go into the Beta's thing and switch to one of the many different version's that we never got the chance to play because they were never made public
