    A fabulously-detailed and very informative video - thanks for the prep and delivery. Let's hope that these skills are kept, when we realise that the myopic decision to can HS2 north will bequeath the north an even bigger transport capacity headache.

    In order to make these similar structures cheaper in the future, the British engineers who worked on this project have to pass down this knowledge down to future generations and the Government should make steps to standardise big infrastructure projects more, so that costs don't balloon like they did last year for HS2.
    Furthermore, we need to make it much harder for local environmental groups to constantly slow down nationally significant big infrastructure projects which just unnecessarily pushes up costs and just makes the construction business extremely unattractive for foreign investment - which we badly need.
    The latest challenge to the Stonehenge Tunnel by TAN (where they have tried their best to delay the project as much as they can) is a classic example of how this country is so pathetic when it comes to building infrastructure.
    Though I am optimistic as Labour has now changed this to make infrastructure projects a national decision rather than a local decision.

      Unfortunately with the cancellation of phase 2 much of the knowledge will be lost. Much like what happens when the Channel Tunnel was finished, with no work to go on to many of the tunnels found work abroad. We never seem to learn the lessons of the past

      @@Rail_Focus , I still think Rishi Sunak was extremely short sighted to cancel the second phase of HS2 though Labour have sort of revived it in principle with the repurposed High Speed Rail bill which would go from Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly. The i newspaper has found that no land sales actually started for the second phase of HS2 so I hope Labour uses this as a golden opportunity to revive HS2 in the long-term. At the very least, they should prevent the land from being developed on any further so that we can pursue this long-term solution.
      That being said, I would like to think that skills are still being retained for future British engineers as we are doing all this drilling under the Chilterns and enable a foundational framework into standardising British infrastructure projects around the country.

      Not sure how they could cut much more from HS2.

    Looking unlikely now the Euston section will be completed. So HS2 will begin at OOC. It's a complete shambles.

      HS2 Ltd is still very much working on the intention that it will go to Euston. It just may take a bit longer than expected

      Yeah as I understand it there's 2 vent shafts being constructed for the tunnel between EUS and OOC

    Way back when, I distinctly remember reading that the Old Oak-Ruislip section was actually going to be above ground and a decision was made to put it in a tunnel, but I’ve never been able to find anything about it since. Anybody got any sources for this??

    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  Месяц назад +1

      It was originally supposed to run alongside the Central Line tracks, but construction would have caused too much disruption due to the number of bridges required.

      @@Rail_Focus do you have any sources for that? Would be interested to read more.

      The original route? I'm not sure if there are any documents/maps available anymore, but it was definitely part of the original proposal. As for the reasoning, that's just what I was told by someone from HS2 Ltd during my visit.
