I had to stop today and realize I need to copy your technique more and more to get away from trying to make my portraits look too perfect. It works as you describe how it is done. At 85 I am still learning......thanks for this new video!
I have been drawing portraits in graphite and charcoal for many years. I have all the tools, including oils, I need to attempt a painting but they have stayed on the shelf. Your instructions and inspiration have made me overcome my fears of "really messing up." I have now begun the portrait painting journey. Thank you sincerely!
So much to learn here, another fantastic video I'll be watching over & over. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom Ben; it's so very much appreciated xx
Dear Mr. Lustenhauwer. Watching you paint and listening to you explaining every detail is how I build - slowly - my own techniques, hoping to get better and better over time. But there is another, perhaps even greater gift you give to us - your audience - and that is CONFIDENCE in our abilities to see, experience and understand the world around us and encourage us to paint. Thank you - again!
Ben, I am so glad to watch your videos! Last weekend I painted from live model, she tried to sit still for about 1,5-2 hours, looking TV series) before I learned from your video how to put underpainting in raw umber like you do. It was my second portrait painting in oil, and it was also second painting from live model. The first one was done also after the video if your blonde granddaughter. Now I realized that I have no fear of oil and of painting with people sitting in front of me anymore 😅 I have been painting in oil only from October 2022 and at first I was afraid of this medium. At first I started from landscapes and still life. But I always wanted to make portraits, since I tried draw them in pencils and watercolor and acrylic. How luckily I met you on RUclips! I watch you videos one by one like a dessert 😊 and of course not only one time! I send you so much gratitude and respect! You are the awesome painter, I like your “not-too-elaborated” style. Hope to see more videos from you!)
I believe you captured your little granddaughter so beautifully . ❤ What a blessed life you have to enjoy your grandchildren.. I love that your doing watercolor. I’ve been trying it and enjoying the process. I’ve been a oil & pastel painter . I have to keep growing & learning it keeps us going. Hugs to you from cold Idaho USA
Thanking you so much. Lovely to watch you painting so confidently and the soothing music you so generously shared with us all. May your life be blessed.
I always enjoy your videos, sir 🤗. Thank you so very much for all your hard work to make such quality productions. I see your friend is a Boston RedSox fan. I live about 20 miles south of Boston so it was interesting to see something so familiar 😄. Thanks again!
Thank you for your commitment as someone who is dedicated to helping the student to develop their own talents. Thank you for sharing your gift. You have helped me more than anyone. Blessings .
Sir, you've given me more colors in 24 minutes than I've ever heard about in 4 decades! But much more importantly, you, sir, just blew my mind away! Classic video here sir. More grace, sire!
I too am always thrilled when a video from you appears in RUclips! This one is EXCELLENT like every one of your videos!! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and your wisdom! I am profoundly grateful! ❤
Thanks for the great tutorial! So important to remember you are creating an painting, not a photograph. Funny story.... Years ago I was doing wildlife watercolors of birds and my friend (a great artist himself) reminded me to make the painting look like a watercolor, not like it was done with designer gouaches... which he did by finishing my painting while I at lunch! haha His "side" of the painting looked 100 times better than mine!
Such great tips on portraits. I have found myself struggling with accuracy and this gives me more insight on not being so precise. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I just discovered your RUclips this past month and I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for all the free quality tutorials. One question is about the kind of canvas you use? Quality teaching. I'm so grateful.
good day teacher Ben has made my day happy I love painting and it's nice to know that there are real artist people who have that passion and share it that's the coolest thing in life from Spain ole, ole.
Im in love with your paintings and your voice. I wish there were more full length tutorials of paintings portraits and anything else you like painting of course. I have found most of my learning comes from following along the long video tutorials of a full painting. Thanks so much!
Dear Jillian. Sometimes I make long videos and sometimes shorter ones. Check out my channel. Soon I hope to make one titled "Everything you want to know about portrait painting" Wait and see.
Thank you sir for the video that means so much for me. In these days we are struggling with a massive earthquake in southeastern of my country. Thanks.
Dear Mr.Lustenhouwer ,Thank you for sharing this painting process. I liked the way you hilighted. the difference between the photorealistic and expressive portrait painting style.
Absolutely loved this video. I loved how you demonstrated putting emotions into your painting with music. The guitar background music was amazing. While I’m new to art, it’s always been important to me to find the connection to the piece rather than the paint by number exactness. Looking forward to watching more. And thanking you for taking Thru the colors as you go and sharing your palette.
Absolutely Amazing! I Love your Video and thank you for all the great advice. In my next Painting Class, I am painting my very first Portrait. Thank you for the inspiration ! And thank you for the Beautiful Music. 😊
A truly fantastic guide on the process- not just on how to paint, but WHY you do it. Sometimes our hobbies and passions can start to become more habit than choice after a while, so I really appreciated the reminder that perfection isn’t the goal. Trying to make a total likeness can really take the fun out of it sometimes, and you can miss what is really appreciated in the work. Also, the model is my dad! Hi Barry! Good job on having a face, I hope it wasn’t too itchy the whole time! Haha. Really though, I’m glad there’s much better portraits of you now than the ones I made when I was 7
It's always a delight to watch your videos. Please post videos more frequently if you can. You can just come and talk if nothing else. Eagerly waiting for more 😊
I was wondering throughout your video about that fantastic music, which complemented your work and didn't get in the way of your explanation - it just seemed to fit perfectly. Congratulations to the musician, and - of course - to you.
My first time watching your video sir and this is very therapeutic. I learned a lot about your technique and process. This is very helpful, thank you for inspiring me and reminding me to paint with passion.
I feel so much inspiration and joy when I watch you paint. You are a true teacher, one that I feel so privileged to be here for and see you making art. You make beautiful analogies and wholesome decisions and mistakes all at the same time and every step is a true makers mark. Ben, thank you for another stunning video. Loved the guitar playing by your cousin as well. So uplifting, felt like I needed this whole video this month. With feeling down about my art stagnancy. And I'm over the moon to hear you talk about brushwork and likeness and how it isn't about the details but about expression. Can you tell it's your friend? Yes! And I can tell so much more too... When you see a painting that captures the moment from the artist eye you see more than an image/a copy but a living moment/feeling. It's like we get to know that person through someone else's eye - magical. it's not something everyone understands though (not wanting to add too much detail) but I truly love that ambiguity about art..and I wish I was better at it. I agree; it is indeed easier to jump back into creating if you leave out those ready to use tools but also a clear space & inviting space that begs to get messy is also good 💞 Can't wait for your next video Mr Lustenhouer! It's always a treat
I Really learm much more ❤ Thank you so much sir i am facing difficulties in portraits now a days some are clear now i can do better 😍😍😍 some are left now i watch more your videos and clear my difficulties 😍❤️
Bedankt hiervoor !
