Imagine being thrust into stardom on a whim, becoming a face of a generation, and then walking away to follow a deeper calling. This is the story of Michael Nesmith-an icon of the '60s who changed music, television, and even the way we watch videos today. But behind the fame, Nesmith's life held twists and turns no one saw coming. From a Monkee in a wool hat to a millionaire innovator, his journey was anything but ordinary. What secrets lay behind his decision to leave the Monkees? And how did he shape an industry that revolutionised entertainment forever? Let’s unravel the fascinating story of Michael Nesmith-a man of unmatched creativity, resilience, and vision. Michael Nesmith was born on December 30, 1942, in Houston, Texas. His early life was shaped by two defining influences: a creative, hardworking mother and the backdrop of post-war America. Raised primarily by his mother, Bette Nesmith Graham, after his parents divorced, Michael grew up watching her forge her own path in a world that didn’t make it easy for women. Bette worked as a secretary, but her frustration with making typing errors led her to invent Liquid Paper. This seemingly simple invention would make her a millionaire and ultimately provide Nesmith with financial stability to pursue his passions later in life. As a young boy, Nesmith wasn’t an academic standout. His interests leaned more toward music, poetry, and the arts. After a brief stint in the Air Force, where he developed discipline and confidence, Nesmith set his sights on Los Angeles-a city pulsing with the promise of creative opportunity. In the early 1960s, Nesmith's life seemed like that of any struggling artist. He served in the Air Force before pursuing music and poetry in Los Angeles. He wrote songs, including “Different Drum,” which Linda Ronstadt turned into a hit. But his real break came in 1965 when he answered a casting call for a new TV show about a fictional band-The Monkees. In 1965, an unusual ad appeared in the Hollywood Reporter: "Madness!! Auditions for 4 insane boys, age 17-21. Want spirited Ben Frank's types." This ad was seeking actors for a new television project-a comedy series about a fictional band. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe To The Remember This RUclips Channel Here ► geni.us/RememberThisChannel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 💥 History and Nostalgia Channel (20th Century History Documentaries)💥 Welcome to the Remember This RUclips History and Nostalgia Channel where we discuss thought provoking subject matter from recent the recent past to modern day... get ready for 20th Century History Documentaries content on all things from conspiracy theories to real events and how they shaped our lives. Do you know who the famous musical family is that Mike Nesbith hung out with and discussed his life and carrer with . ???? With respect no hints 🙏✌️🤘🎸🥁🇦🇺
I was part of the target demographic for the TV show and the music (age 11 or 12), way back when.... I saw a version of The Monkees live exactly once, in August of 2016. Micky and Peter were on tour with a backing band, and Mike joined them on stage for the last 4 songs of the show, one night only, because he lived nearby. He came on and stood with his back to the audience, checking the tuning of his guitar. Then he turned around to face us, and said "Hi!" They played the songs, and then the 3 surviving Monkees linked up with arms around shoulders and did that funny walk off the stage. One of the most fun concerts I've ever seen. Who knew Peter was deadpan hilarious? And when it came time for "Daydream Believer," Micky announced that the song could not possibly be sung by anyone but Mr. David Jones. Davy's vocals had been isolated and in absentia he sang lead, complete with video from the TV show. The last time through the chorus, Micky said, "YOU sing it!" and held out his microphone to the audience. And we sang it.
Mike was my guy... my first musical hero. He took on Don Kirshner and won! Notwithstanding his innovations, his haunting voice and song performances (whether his own or someone else's) made him the only "country" artist I can actually listen to and enjoy in a genre I cannot stand otherwise. Monkees: Sunny Girlfriend, Listen To The Band, Writing Wrongs, Circle Sky, Don't Call On Me, Salesman, You Told Me, Magnolia Simms, Good Clean Fun, Daily Nightly & Girl I Knew Somewhere (both sung by Micky). Solo: Rio, Casablanca Moonlight, Cruisin', Magic, Dance, Different Drum, Silver Moon, Grand Ennui.
My favorite Nesmith song is You Told Me. Its a perfect melding of rock, country and blue grass! The use of Peter Tork's banjo as the basis for a rock song was unheard of at the time. It demonstrates the true genius of Nesmith who composed this song to open up the HEADQUARTERS album. That record demonstrated to the world the musical freedom and total control that these 4 individuals fought for and won. Although it is never said, groups like the Byrds, The Eagles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco and many more, were listening to Nesmith's seminal work in Country Rock, and integrated it into their own sound just a few years later. Thanks so much for posting this video.
I took a course in Liquid Paper back in the 70s, and I got a job out of it! Thanks, Mike's Mom. And thanks Mike - you made a big difference in a lot of lives.
So hard to pick a favorite. I have all of his albums. Love Mike/Michael. Actually, I love all those guys. I suppose Papa Gene's Blues is a fave. The lyrics and the tune are both excellent. The Wrecking Crew arrangement is just what I like, although Nez himself never did it that way. Mary, Mary is another cool one. Glenn Campbell plays here. The psychedelic Daily Nightly always worked for me. Listen To the Band is still one of my all-time faves. Joanne, Calico Girlfriend, Silver Moon, Tengo Amore, Grand Ennui, Propinquity, Different Drum, Roll With the Flow, Some of Shelley's Blues to name a few. And of course Rio, Lucy Ramona and Sunset Sam and the Prison album as a whole. God bless you Mike. Got to see you a couple of times. Good times at Video Ranch
I've been a fan since the beginning of the Monkees. After thier break up, I still followed thier careers afterwards. I love Michael's work after the Monkees. I have all of his albums. I also got to see all four Monkees at the Greek Theater back in 1986. I'm a huge fan that always remained faithful thoughout the decades.
From 'Different Drum' to 'Elephant Parts,' Michael Nesmith's legacy is a testament to his innovation, passion, and dedication to pushing artistic boundaries.
Michael’s solo career showed the depth of his creativity, blending genres and experimenting with storytelling in ways that few artists dared to explore.
It is ironic that Michael Nesmith left The Monkees because he found it too restricting for his creativity. And then he became the instigator behind MTV which has morphed into the single biggest commercial force in the modern music industry . And now today it costs so much money to produce new records that most producers will not even look at music that does not snuggly fit into some predetermined genre. And now consumers complain that all music sounds the same.
My middle brother went to SAC with Michael. My brother was a guitarist and would practice with him. My brother told us he was really good...then he ended up being a Monkee.
Michael Nesmith was a true visionary, not just within The Monkees but in the music industry as a whole. His pioneering work in country rock paved the way for countless artists.
I am a big fan of the Monkees and Michael Nesmith. Really l😢his solo material. Joanne, Silver Moon, and everything else demonstrate his genius as a songwriter. Of course, he was obviously a genius in other areas as well. I guess you could call him a multi genius!
Mike was a very underrated songwriter. And by the way,I know he didn’t write it but “Me & Magdalena” was such a great song that it should have been played on the radio and could have won a Grammy it was that good.
Beyond his role in The Monkees, Nesmith’s contributions to the development of music videos and media production were groundbreaking. He truly was ahead of his time.
Mike Nesmith Gibson guitar playing on Pleasant Valley Sunday in 67 and 86 Also Mike guitar playing on Tapioca Tundra and While I cried. Always a Monkeys fan.
For me, Rio and Joanne were my favourite songs. Rio, 1977, didn't get a lot of airplay here in Australia because radio was obsessed with playing Peter Allen's 1976 song, I Go to Rio, which I hate. Just a bit of trivia: music-loving Baby Boomers were well aware at the time that The Monkees TV show was the yanks' way of cashing in on the Richard Lester film of The Beatles clowing around in A Hard Day's Night. Like Nesmith, we all had to fight back the idea that while the TV show was entertaining and the songs were good, that The Monkees were a manufactured band. Davy Jones never came to terms with this, insisting in an interview years later that The Beatles were the first manufactured band. He cited Brian Epstein's management, which included how they dressed, and he also said in an interview that Epstein "dumped Pete Best." In fact, it was a unanimous Beatles' decision to replace Best because they preferred Ringo's drumming, as he had sat in on performances in Hamburg when Best wasn't available. They simply gave Epstein the job of telling him. Jones also credits Epstein for The Beatles' 'manufactured' hair styles, claiming they were from the stage play Oliver. In fact, it was Stuart Sutcliffe's German girlfriend, Astrid Kirchherr, who instructed a German hairdressing friend of hers to cut and groom the famous hairstyle long before they even met Epstein. Davy Jones, who sadly died prematurely, was a lovely guy who probably got fed up with The Monkees' manufactured tag and was just lashing out.
this was great, thanks Phil. I lived through the Monkees era and had not known of all of Mike's achievements. May I ask, is your accent Aussie or Kiwi? I've lived in both countries
If you haven’t seen Elephant Parts or Television Parts, do yourself a favor and see them. Both show Mike as a gifted songwriter and a man with a great sense of humor. One of my favorite skits was the vegetarian who went hunting for his next meal! RIP, Mike. I will always miss you.
Mike Nesmith doesn't get much credit for his contributions to the country rock genre of the late 60s and early 70s. He was playing that music with the Monkees and but few critics acknowledged it.
