Just some thoughts to share... I doubt that it is a factor in this application, but fishing line is engineered to have a lot of stretch in it. This helps reduce the shock of the fish's jerk that snaps the line. There is a lot of technical engineering to fishing line manufacturing. The braided stuff was the way to go, for this use. There are ferrules made for fishing line. They might be of a better size for this use than the big electric crimp. Of course, a special tool is offered to make a better crimp in fishing line ferrules. I don't know why, but fishing lure equipment is really expensive, for what it is. Similar line, crimps and tools are sold for making wrist bracelets and necklaces. These are found on line, in Walley's craft department, Hobbit Lobbit, Etc. Jeweler's tools are particularly great, on an EE bench, and they are not particularly expensive. Really great for the wire work of bending component pins, etc. HTH. Cheers.
VERY helpful, thanks for posting!
Last fish I caught was in the freezer case at Costco. 😝
Keep in touch Ray. Your content is excellent..
Thank you! I've been trying to catch up on all the stuff I need to do around the house that didn't get done because I was on the bench all the time. Turns out that it's waaay more than I thought. 😆
As you I am not good at working with moving parts.
Thanks for sharing this repairing video 😊
Then I'm in good company, Uri!
wake me up with a nice video ray, excellent job that string must be a headache to put it in awesome
Wilfredo! Nice to hear from you.
Like many things in life, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. First 6 attempts were the hardest. 😁
working on a pioneer sx1010 right now.dealing with those old wire wrap connections make me think that i know exactly what your talking about very tedious sometimes.
@@willievivanco1 I have wire wrap and unwrap tools, but usually there's not enough slack in the wire to strip for new wrap. Some advocate for unsoldering the lugs, but I've had bac luck getting them soldered back in, especially trying to get them to be straight. Like some, I just cut the wires and solder them to the posts.
Nice to hear from you, Wilfredo!
Are you OK, Ray? Long time no see you…I knew about your vision problems from your own words, but…I hope everything’s fine for you, man. I send you all my strength from Spain ❤
Hi Fichamba. It has been a while. I've been so busy I didn't realize just how long it's been!
I'm fine, just trying to get my home ready for sale. Apparently I let a LOT of things slide while I was working on the bench.
Thanks for reaching out, and for the well wishes. I truly appreciate you!
Thank you for your answer, Ray! Bufff, good news, you are fine. I miss your videos a lot, but the first is the first! (by the way, my real name is Jesus…). Anyway, I still deserve all the best for you, Ray. A big hug from Madrid!
Great video Ray.
Thanks! It was a bit tough trying to make one cohesive video out of the chaos of that was going on with this accursed unit. 😁
Hello. I have a boombox with an analog tuner. It does not play any FM station with no static noise. Stereo light comes on. It have a new antenna. FM stations’ signals are good because my other tuners have no problem. Inside the boombox is very clean. Antenna cables are connected. I cleaned all the switches with contact spray. I played with the tuner pot screws but it did not get any better so I put them back to the initial position. What can be the issue?
Ray, it’s been two months since you posted. I hope you are not sick/injured but just busy at work.
Hi Bill! No health issues, just decluttering and cleaning. Looking to sell the house and get out of Florida.
@@raygianelli3612 glad to hear there are no health issues. Does this mean you have retired?
@@bill_p2074 Not yet. Gotta squeeze 'em for every dime before I go. 😁
thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Ray that tuner string had me getting anxious all the way over here! I have never come into contact with these but was wondering if the factory may have had a spec on the length of the loop with the pointer parts etc, had them premade and just routed them in, say, like you'd do an accessory belt on a car. (?) Great video I enjoy every one of them.
Hmm. I never thought about the factory stringing process. I suspect it was all done manually, and I don't know that having precut strings would speed the process. But maybe they did. CALLING ALL FORMER MARANTZ FACTORY WORKERS! 😁
Re-string on a 2235B drove me mad, until I figured out that you can simply loosen the LHS bracket on which the pulley sits, complete the circle and only then put it back in place, which then easily rewards you with tensioning the spring.
Wow, thanks for posting this. Gonna have to keep that one in my back pocket!
Wow.. Been there before with that dial string.. It's always a "oh s%^t" moment... Great use of fishing line.. that stuff will last a long while.. I was real curious however about the issue you had with the 300 ohm vs 75 ohm.. The only device there is the balun which is really just wound wire around a piece of ferrite. Ive never seen those ever go bad but another thing i have found is that attenuator switch develops oxidized contacts and often needs to be de-oxit cleaned which i have found was a big cause of weak gain. If you still have that unit.. give that a simple try....
It's already gone, Frank. Cleaned the switch a few times. May have been soldering between the balun and the terminals.
I have an unrestored 2230, the tuning wheel will not go all the way to the right, if I try, it will get stuck there and be hard to bring back to the left. Is it a string issue? I've only opened it once to clean it and spray the controls cause they were crackling.
I don't think the tuning string would be the issue. I would check to see if anything is obstructing the tuning capacitor. Don't spray any kind of cleaner into the tuning capacitor. If it needs lubrication, carefully dab some oil at the contact point. Sprays and lubricants can foul the tuning cap.
I think the LO freq is 10.7MHz above the rf input. When mixed, the output is 10.7MHz.
Correct. Sums and differences, with the difference frequencies ignored by the IF.
You and me both Ray, Tape decks and Women, I dont like the former and don't understand the latter ! I have no patience to do re stringing either....cheers !
I hear you, brother!

Hi Ray, I see that Murphy's laws work everywhere 😂 but you fixed that string beautifully 👍
The antenna input amused me, I have never seen such a defect, do you think the problem is directly in the connector, or is the balun defective?
Nice day 🙂Tom
Hi Tom! Yeah, we should call Interpol about that Murphy bastard.
I suspect that the unit took a lightning surge through the antenna, and that the front end was either repaired or replaced. And I think that may have impacted the balun. They usually don't fail, being nothing more than wire wrapped around a ferrite core. Which is also why it took me so long to find.
All hail their higher powers for the invention of the digital FM tuner.
Damn right... no strings attached!
Ray, have you ever thought about a second career at NASA?
Honestly, I'm looking forward to the day that I can put working a day job behind me and spend more time on the bench.
But I appreciate the thought behind your post!
For some strange reason the word hemostat comes up and my mind travels to the 70's at the speed of sound...go figure.
Yeah, ya gotta clean that brown residue off before using them on your bench. 😝
@@raygianelli3612 😂 or not 😂
@@josephlalock8378 Definitely a little of both!
@raygianelli3612 excellent answer Ray!
cant watch anyone wearing a vest lol
