I love this video. Not only do you review the book lists of others, and books you love and don’t love, you share snippets of the best of the BookTubers you follow. A great creator can share their platform with confidence. Happy New Year! Looking forward to more from this series.
Hi Shelly. This was a really fun video. I've learned about a few new-to-me booktubers, too, so thank you very much. Thank you, too, for the lovely things that you said about me as a teacher and as a booktuber. So kind of you. Your ongoing conflict (that's too strong a word; it's not really a conflict, but you know what I mean) with Scott was described in a really humorous and even endearing way. The respect that you both feel for each other is apparent first and foremost. I was very interested in your thoughts about readers' different attitudes toward North Woods. I think that I did ultimately see it as one continuous story, but I'm not sure that I saw it that way initially. I read it twice for two different purposes, and yes, I think I did ultimately see it as one continuous story where all of earliest characters continued and made themselves present throughout time. I thought it was an incredibly intricate narrative. It stayed with me for a long time, and I kept thinking about it long after my second reading of it. I do think that Everett's JAMES was probably the most important work of fiction that I read this year, and I'm glad that it is now getting the attention that it deserves. But it wasn't my favorite reading experience (so it's my #2 rather than my #1); my no. 1 ranking went to the Irish novel, The Queen of Dirt Island, which spoke to me on a deeply personal level and also led to my reading several other novels by Donal Ryan, who was new to me. But I do think that JAMES is probably the most important American novel of the year, and I don't usually speak in terms of superlatives like that. Anyway, this was a really interesting and fun video. Thanks for including me, and again, thank you for being so kind about what I'm trying to do here. I hope that you are having a lovely holiday season, and I'm wishing you all good things in the new year!
Pat! Thank you for the kind words. I really adore Scott and all of what he brings to our reading corner of the internet. Since you’ve mentioned it, I’m intrigued by Queen of Dirt Island. A purchase may be in my future.
@ I can tell that you and Scott really have great admiration for each other. I think you’re both phenomenal. Donal Ryan has been a great new find for me this past year where I was really on a quest to read a lot of contemporary Irish literature, although I first read him by accident through judging the Book Tube Prize. I just think he’s terrific.
Thank you for introducing me to a couple of new channels and for this great video. My Brilliant Friend was a good I DNFed, then said to myself, nah give it a second chance and it ended up winning me over... But it is exactly the kind of novel I would rip apart if it wasn't done quite as well as it was.
Hi Shelly what a great idea for a video! So nice to meet some new booktubers. I am not in a space right now where I get to a lot of adult reads, so I live vicariously through you guys!!
What a wonderful surprise! Thank you so much for including me in this fabulous group of booktubers and for highlighting ‘H is for Hawk’. Dang, I luurrve that book so much ❤ Happy new year Shelley 🎉
My favourite books of 2024 1. Dune By Frank Herbert 2. The Wartime Book Club by Kate Thompson 3. The Hot Hex Boyfriend By Carly Bloom 4. Hate To Love You By Jennifer Sucevic 5. Dungeon Crawler Carl By Matt Dinniman 6. Quilt Of Souls By Phyllis Biffle Elmore 7. The Sliverblood Promise By James Logan 8. Just For The Summer By Abby Jinenez 9. Walking Practice By Dolki Hin 10. Covenant Vol 2 By Lysandra Wuong (Graphic Novel). Ordinary Human Feelings was a mod book for me and I saw what it was trying to do, but I only gave it 3 stars.
❤📚📚❤️ A great series idea, Shelly. I love Angela's channel, too! I read H is for Hawk on her recommendation. I also follow Freshly Read Books. 😊 I'll have to check out these other channels.
I know what you mean about the “romance” in The Safekeep. It didn’t feel authentic and the “spicy bits” felt out of place and went on too long. REREAD THE RAVEN CYCLE!!! It’s even better when you know what’s coming. You’ll notice the quality of Maggie’s writing in the dialogue and characters and somehow feel the story more 🖤
I don't read a lot of Science Fiction, but I gave Kindred a try recently. It wasn't great, but it's OK. It was well-plotted - the ending was not obvious yet also seemed inevitable. It was also an easy read - I'd say high school level.
I enjoy … Tristan and the classics. He is funny And a joy to watch. Also enjoy watching your channel, even tho the past few years I mostly read classics.
I tend to be on your side in the Scott/Shelly debates but I thought Ordinary Human Failings was really well done, and I usually hate modern literary fiction. I loved I Who Have Never Known Men and My Beautiful Friend too. I agree with Kindred, it is a decent book but overhyped.

You're so welcome! You’re great and so is your channel!!
Some interesting faves. Some in definitely interested in. Thanks for introducing me to new (to me) Booktubers too. 😊💙
Wonderful, Jolene!!

Thanks! I’m really glad you like the series. I hope you had a wonderful holiday, Starla!!
Fun banter!
Thank you!
I laughed so hard when I heard Scott describe you a while back as his ‘nemesis’ and ‘frenemy’.
I laughed even harder at your reaction here.
Priceless!
Ha! Thank you!!
I LOVE Piranesi !
Me too!
This was fun!
Thank you, Lindy!!

Yes! Exactly! The Safekeep was a swing and a miss.

That's a great critique of Kindred! Thank you!

How much did Scott pay you to side with him? Hm??
I was very underwhelmed by the North Woods.
Understandable.
