Used to love seeing these Cabover Kenworths on the Hume back as a kid in the late 80’s. The family car was an old slow Hiace so you got to see a good variety of trucks as they were constantly passing us.
A mechanic I used to work with said fuel tankers typically had air starters back in the day. He also worked on dredge boat that had air starters. If the air tank was empty he said he had to go down and pump a lever for about an hour.
wondered what that starter was... interesting. so in the winter plug the block heater in and hook up the external air compressor, yer gonna need it... some of those old engines were hard to start in the winter for sure.

Patty that’s a pneumatic starter. It uses the air in the auxiliary tank to start it. You gotta have a well tuned engine if you have pneumatics because you only get 2-3 cranks out of it before you run out of air.

Mack thermodynes had an optional extra long time ago that enabled you to use air out of a tyre to a start the engine, then when it was going you could pump up the flat tyre!
Dominik Gabler we definitly should get them here, but i don't think that they would sound cool on a Scania or Volvo... But on a Kenworth they fit perfectly.

Good looking K100. Good, for you, Xtra fuel tanks. Hey, bud, front axle is crying out for aluminum buds, on them, togo with wonderfull KW design, of K100. Used to have a ' 74 KW K 100, cummins 350 , jake brake, bud front wheels. NO power steering, but good for upper body exercise !. Red interior, very good paint/paint job ! on it. White, in color with Fuller RTO 12513 speed. YOURS = sounds like an air starter system ....? i used to put pop/juice cans, on the handle above the door, on top. Keeps them handy, and cool, too !

WE WERE AT A COUNTY FAIR PULL IN ONAGA KS! THE PULL LASTED TILL WELL AFTER DARK BEFORE THE PULL WAS OVER! THERE WERE NO RESTROOM FACILITIES AT THE PULL GROUNDS AND PEOPLE WERE GOING TO THE TREES AND BUSHES AT THE EDGE OF THE GROUNDS TO RELEIVE THEM SELVES! THE TRUCK WAS PARKED AT A DARK CORNER OF THE GROUNDS WITH HEAVY BUSHES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAB! I FLIPPED THE HEADLIGHT ON AND HIT THE AIR START BUTTON! I DIDNT HAVE A MUFFLER ON THE AIRSTARTER AND IT REALLY WOULD HOWL! THERE WAS A LADY BETWEEN THE BUSHES AND TRUCK TAKING A PEE!! WHEN THE AIR STARTER FIRED OFF, SHE CAME FLYING OUT RUNNING AS FAST AS HER PANTIES AND BLUE JEANS AROUND HER ANKLES WOULD LET HER!! LOL , LOL!!!

My father and I had a 79 KW with a CAT 3408 in it but was electric start. 24 volt start, actually. Such a mean machine. Yours is gorgeous!
Most of the Australian KWs with 3408s had air starts, but some were 24V electric with a series-parallel switch to give 12V for the lights, radio etc.

If you're on the road you hook up an airline to a couple of tyres and charge the starter air tank.
