- Sitting for a few weeks, cold start with some smoke!
Advantages of air start:
They have a longer working life than electric.
No need to worry about flat batteries, every tyre on the truck is basically a battery, because if you run out of air you connect your airline to a tyre to charge the starter air tank.
The starter air tank is seperate from the main air system and will hold air for weeks as long as everything is well maintained.
They spin the engine over a lot faster than electric.
Alternators and batteries last a lot longer because they don't have the heavy drain of electric starts.
The system is lighter than an electric start system.
You can run your fridge without worrying if the batteries will go flat.
Disadvantages:
You must maintain the system or you will run out of air.
They are a lot more expensive than electric start systems.
You must make sure they are lubricated, this is the #1 reason people have problems.

Used to love seeing these Cabover Kenworths on the Hume back as a kid in the late 80’s. The family car was an old slow Hiace so you got to see a good variety of trucks as they were constantly passing us.
A mechanic I used to work with said fuel tankers typically had air starters back in the day. He also worked on dredge boat that had air starters. If the air tank was empty he said he had to go down and pump a lever for about an hour.

wondered what that starter was... interesting. so in the winter plug the block heater in and hook up the external air compressor, yer gonna need it... some of those old engines were hard to start in the winter for sure.

Man, CAT 06B and 08 has the greatest, signature big rig diesel sound ever. Detroit and Cummins have their glory but CAT is king!!!
I love how the whole truck is wobbling when you rev the engine. Not surprising when it's a 18 litre V8 engine, but still cool.

My father and I had a 79 KW with a CAT 3408 in it but was electric start. 24 volt start, actually. Such a mean machine. Yours is gorgeous!
Most of the Australian KWs with 3408s had air starts, but some were 24V electric with a series-parallel switch to give 12V for the lights, radio etc.

Patty that’s a pneumatic starter. It uses the air in the auxiliary tank to start it. You gotta have a well tuned engine if you have pneumatics because you only get 2-3 cranks out of it before you run out of air.
@@samwagner31 They where used pretty heavily before electric starters became strong enough to crank the engine without draining the battery is what I have seen people say about them.
02091992able yep, they’re still used in maritime engines though. Their generators can power the air compressors, so there’s plenty of air to get the main engines going.
After all the times I've seen it, this is one of my top five favorite trucks of all time. She's a beaut.

Dominik Gabler we definitly should get them here, but i don't think that they would sound cool on a Scania or Volvo... But on a Kenworth they fit perfectly.
@@truckertj2109 just go to the dealer, volvo or scania and order one, theyr common in marine applications,run air lines to a solinoid switc using the original starter wire,or make a push button start....................

I have used Air started on diesel engines just on power generating cat engines, diesel and natural gas. Never saw em on a truck. Amazing

It's a discontinued American engine.

@@Alex462047 They shouldn't go after truckers and their engines. Like many old drivers have said, if trucks stopped moving the world would shut down. If you want to control emissions then help third world countries to stop relying on so much coal an move to cleaner energies. They cause the most pollution.

Mack thermodynes had an optional extra long time ago that enabled you to use air out of a tyre to a start the engine, then when it was going you could pump up the flat tyre!

MY FUNNIEST EXPERIENCE WITH AN AIR STARTER WAS IN 1978!
I WAS RUNNING A 1963 WHITE 7000 CABOVER WITH SLEEPER AND CUMMINS POWER!
I WAS USING THIS TRUCK TO TRANSPORT A TRACTOR PULL SLED. WE WERE AT A COUNTY FAIR PULL IN ONAGA KS!
THE PULL LASTED TILL WELL AFTER DARK BEFORE THE PULL WAS OVER!
THERE WERE NO RESTROOM
FACILITIES AT THE PULL GROUNDS AND PEOPLE WERE GOING TO THE TREES AND BUSHES AT THE EDGE OF THE GROUNDS TO RELEIVE THEM SELVES!
THE TRUCK WAS PARKED AT A DARK CORNER OF THE GROUNDS WITH HEAVY BUSHES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAB!
I FLIPPED THE HEADLIGHT ON AND HIT THE AIR START BUTTON!
I DIDNT HAVE A MUFFLER ON THE AIRSTARTER AND IT REALLY WOULD HOWL!
THERE WAS A LADY BETWEEN THE BUSHES AND TRUCK TAKING A PEE!!
WHEN THE AIR STARTER FIRED OFF, SHE CAME FLYING OUT RUNNING AS FAST AS HER PANTIES AND BLUE JEANS AROUND HER ANKLES WOULD LET HER!! LOL , LOL!!!

Good looking K100. Good, for you, Xtra fuel tanks. Hey, bud, front axle is crying out for aluminum buds, on them, togo with wonderfull KW design, of K100. Used to have a ' 74 KW K 100, cummins 350 , jake brake, bud front wheels. NO power steering, but good for upper body exercise !. Red interior, very good paint/paint job ! on it. White, in color with Fuller RTO 12513 speed. YOURS = sounds like an air starter system ....? i used to put pop/juice cans, on the handle above the door, on top. Keeps them handy, and cool, too !

The alternative is the manual spring starter. It oftenly used as back-up system on the emergency generators.
