Everyone does not need to have access to every foot of coastline. CA is the most littered state in the nation. That's what will happen to the coast when everyone has unfettered access, because anti- litter laws are among the thousands of 'low level' laws that are NEVER enforced in California. One of the major problems with CA government and most of the environmental despots is that they are all or nothing, no middle ground.
How can you say it should be for "everyone" but at the same time "no one" is allowed to live there? So it is for no one? That would be a total waste of land if no one was to live there! Those are the very best spots to build a house and live! Do not waste it with nothing there!
The coastline was always there, that did not change. Just unfortunately now many people can't enjoy living there anymore. It's a loss. Those homes were at the best spots.
I lived in Southern California in the Navy for 10 years in the late '80s and '90s and I rode my motorcycle along that stretch of road. Many many times. None of those homes should ever be rebuilt. It was an abomination to have them built there and obstruct that spectacular view
Have to agree they should not have been built (it is so much nicer in Carmel and Monterey where the coast side of the road has no homes) but what to say for the people that have homes there.

After the fire, Caltrans denuded the slopes for fifty feet, up from PCH towards Santa Monica's Palisades Park. Ironically, they did leave the gigantic palm trees growing there. This is a historical slide zone and is guaranteed to slide in the next major rainstorm. No retaining walls were ever built on this stretch. Natural drainage is toward the beach. The City and Caltrans need to take a proactive and serious look at this issue before it becomes a follow-on disaster.
The coastal mansions were all satanic and they use the places to lure in victims. Rich people like that had a lot of houses and move around leaving hired security to guard the places and kicked out anyone that came close.

Sorry, I'm not shedding a tear for the millionaires. I'm sure they all could afford wildfire insurance unlike many Californians. I hope building on that side of the highway is finally made illegal.
California FAIR Plan pays out 3 Million. Imagine working your whole life to get a peace of property, then the city mismanages services which leads you to lose it all in a fire, then they offer you 1/3 of the value to rebuild! Oh, And you don't get to rebuild until they rebuild the infostructure, in this case the electrical system that comes in overhead lines, will take about 3 to 5 years.
Not everyone that lost a home in these fires are millionaires. My best friend's son , his wife and 3 young girls lost their home. They are medical professionals that worked really hard to buy a house in a dream neighborhood to raise their daughters.
A lot of people here saying it'll be so nice to drive along PCH and just see the beach and have access to the beach without all those homes there. And I see what they're saying, but as someone who lives not far from that stretch of PCH - I would take Topanga Canyon down to PCH - it's going to be a long time before anyone can even safely visit there. it'll take a year for clean up, but that stuff in the air, the sand, the soil will linger for a long time. I just won't be going down there for a very long time, probably over a year. This summer don't be the same. It's very sad. Lots of memories.
It's a pity I have to say it, but I don't think it would be a good idea to let them rebuild on such a stunning coastline. These properties were an eyesore.
That beach front land should not be allowed to be built on again. If sea level rise is true than the homes would destroyed in the future anyway. Turn it into public beach.
TBH, They shouldn't be rebuilt. I don't care how much they were worth. Those homes made the coastline look terrible along the beach and they are also threatened by a tsunami and rising sea waters, not just fires. They were not a tourist attraction, they were an embarrassment. They were an example of mismanagement and allowing people with money to do anything.
Those beachfront homes have been there since the 1930s and were much more attractive with open yards and another 100 ft of beach between the house and the ocean. But geologic change has left these homes right on the edge of the surf, and most of the home owners remodeled the house upward and turned a "blind" face to the road, which had gone from two lanes to a highway. To rebuild the same structure there now makes little sense. Return the beach to a natural area with public access. The insurance companies can compensate the home owners who will then be able to build in a less risky location.
I grew up in Malibu in the 50's which was before movie stars and wealthy moved there whom ruined it. As much as I am extremely grateful that as a kid I got to grow up playing on a beach and surfing in my front yard ... in hindsight, I have come to feel that NO ONE should be allowed to build and live on the ocean as it needs to be for everyone to enjoy. But sadly I have also experienced, even living North Shore Oahu, how some of the public just trashes beaches even leaving baby diapers behind is disgusting! So it's a very complex complicated issue.

If you don't like the beach houses in Malibu and Pacific Palisades, just drive a few miles north on PCH. Mile after mile of unobstructed views of the ocean.
Add in no water and no clearing of brush or cutting fire breaks and you can guarantee a catastrophic fire. Almost seems like it was planned. Keep in mind the FAIR Plan insurance only covers 3 million and these places were in the 12 million ballpark. NYC had a great fire in 5 Points that cleared people and allowed investors to rebuild the area and make billions, I wonder if this is the same type of thing a couple of hundred years later.
I sincerely hope that public official are sensible and recognize that this area should be made accessible to the public rather than restricted to the few who are fortunate to own homes along the coast. I'd like to see restaurants like Moonshadows return, and it would be wonderful if public institutions, like museums and parks, are created. I hope that this section of PCH never returns to a string of rickity, fabulously expensive homes sitting shoulder to shoulder that restrict access to the beach and block out the beautiful ocean views.

That ended with 4-nights at Mission Bay in San Diego and it was a fantastic trip. The views are incredible all the way down the coast; although you have to get in I-5 every now and then.
I will always recall me and my estranged husband driving down the PCH - enjoying the magnificent views - talking - healing our issues,-and eventually getting remarried.
ACE Man! Haha, funny he doesn't mention that the guy talking about Drilling Caissons also lives in a Condo in Malibu! Apparently Adam Carolla had to evacuate, but his property survived.
Condemn all that burned down Beach Front land and fill it all in with fresh sand , those homes should have never been allowed to be built there The wealthy and connected should not be allowed to rebuild on the beach front it should be for all the little people to enjoy.
I found it frustrating driving through that area knowing the ocean was right next to the highway, but I couldn’t even see it for the houses built so tightly together. I’ll be interested in how resistant the government will be to the mountains of money offered them to allow rebuilding along the shore.
Once the house was burned down, leave it vacant. The beaches belong to the public. There’re incidents that beach front property owners block the access to the beach.

Should never have been zoned for houses . Great Aunt Adele had a "beach shack", she rented for 3 months of the year. It was owned by a fisherman and was built in 1950, it was washed away with it's stilts in 72. Now is the time to stop new houses. Keep the large restaurants
In Florida if you make any "improvement" (like building a NEW house!!!) to your existing property that exceeds 50% of its value then the entire property must meet current regulations.
In Monterey, we don't have a lot of beachfront homes and rentals. You can actually access most of the beaches without having to intrude on private property. Maybe So Cal should try it?
1:50 how did that even happen. Across the street where the fire came from, houses not touched, but the other side, on the water, all the houses completely gone.
Fire hazardous conditions will increase. There is a clear tendency towards intensified wind activity in the coming years. This, combined with drought, will cause fires to spread rapidly. Even increasing water pressure in hydrants or expanding the budget for the fire department won't prevent more fires from happening in this area next time.
Absolutely drought and Santa Ana winds and fires happen here every year, some years the winds and droughts worse then others. One of many things that needs to change is more money for wildfire prevention, this is huge!

There's no clear tendency towards intensified winds. Santa Ana winds have blown since the beginning of time and while 100 mph winds aren't the norm, they have blown that hard 100s of times before.
@ Wildfires are growing catastrophically all over the world. They occur along new cracks and faults in the Earth's crust. Gases such as hydrogen and methane rise to the surface from the depths. These gases are easily flammable. As cracks in the Earth's crust are now getting bigger, more gases are released. That's why fires along faults are becoming larger and more frequent every year. It can be compared to a huge gas burner. It's very difficult to put out such fires, because the fire hotspots are constantly fueled by gases coming from the Earth's depths. And hurricane-force winds carry the fire at high speed. To extinguish such fires, there are not enough people or equipment. The area destroyed by fires in 2023-2024 is dozens of times larger in some countries than in previous years.
I agree with all of the preceding comments. The view of the ocean from PCH should not be blocked by construction of any sort. Given the rising sea level, it would be unwise to rebuild. The coastal commission has been working with residents in other areas along the coast to relocate their houses away from the coast in a program called managed retreat. As tragic as this fire and resulting losses are (though to be honest, I don't have much sympathy for the people who have scarred the coast with their vulgar buildings), this is the moment to impose a permanent building moratorium on future construction. Add in the heretofore unthinkable possibility of massive fire damage, and there is no justification to rebuild anything. .
Remember reading about the Carpetbaggers of America's Civil War. It looks like there is going to be a new Southern California version of it after the wildfires are defeated. Making you an offer you can't refuse.
I feel very sorry for all the people who lost their homes and I´m sending them my prayers. However I remember driving along PCH and it was very annoying to have all these houses block the beachfront and take away the view from everyone.

How are The Coastal Commission going to allow them to rebuild when they aren't even allowed to remodel or reinforce seawalls? This is going to be a battle between environmentalists and the political money source.
Developers should never have been allowed to desecrate the shore. There's enough rise going uphill back off the highway to build on, and everyone still have a view.
I feel bad for all who lost their homes, but building on the ocean side of the road is like standing up in the front row of a movie theater. Please rebuild across the street so the rest of us can see the ocean. That goes for Hawaii and Florida too.
Years of putting up to environmental regulations. Paying a premium to inhale cleaner air is gone. You may have to travel to Tijuana to get some fresh air.
Title to the land is still privately owned. The government would need to commence condemnation cases and pay fair compensation in order to take ownership. And if the government unreasonably impedes private rebuilding, then that's called inverse condemnation, which is taking through deprivation of use.

That's what will happen to the coast when everyone has unfettered access, because anti- litter laws are among the thousands of 'low level' laws that are NEVER enforced in California. One of the major problems with CA government and most of the environmental despots is that they are all or nothing, no middle ground.
Is that how you feel?!😜 Thanks for sharing.
How can you say it should be for "everyone" but at the same time "no one" is allowed to live there? So it is for no one? That would be a total waste of land if no one was to live there! Those are the very best spots to build a house and live! Do not waste it with nothing there!
I am against homes by the beach. The public must have access to the beach and that includes a view from the highway. The rich can find somewhere else
I need somewhere to poop
Absolutely....So much for " the home of the free". Americans need to take their country back from these grifters... ASAP!

@ No, the highway is needed and is paid for by the taxpayers.
Well at least now there actually is a beach coastline.
Doubt you'd be saying that if your home was there and is now rubble.
Do you own the property? If not, keep your piehole shut. This is the United States and if they own it, they can do what they want with it within reason according to codes now if you wanna buy that piece of property from them and they’re willing to sell it to you, go right ahead if that view is so important to you.

Next mudslides
Those beachfront homes have been there since the 1930s and were much more attractive with open yards and another 100 ft of beach between the house and the ocean. But geologic change has left these homes right on the edge of the surf, and most of the home owners remodeled the house upward and turned a "blind" face to the road, which had gone from two lanes to a highway. To rebuild the same structure there now makes little sense. Return the beach to a natural area with public access. The insurance companies can compensate the home owners who will then be able to build in a less risky location.
It’s going to be nice cruising PCH and enjoying the view.. instead of the rich people blocking it 😅

So many people saying not to rebuild. Plenty of places where the beach is open, go enjoy there. Let people have what they own.
In Florida if you make any "improvement" (like building a NEW house!!!) to your existing property that exceeds 50% of its value then the entire property must meet current regulations.

Look into DEWs, SMART Meters Explode & caught houses on fire from WITHIN not some external fire in most cases & why in some neighborhoods there are FBI, Cops, FIre, National Guard, Military & hired private contractors???? One lady who was THE last to evacuate her neighborhood said she observed the houses starting on fire inside yet there was NO FIRE OUTSIDE THE DWELLING. PG&E who has been forcing home owners to install SMART meters or otherwise having to pay extra monthly cost for OPTING OUT. In some cases the front house original & old had no smart meter the guest house just out back new & has SMART meter on them, they burned the old house is still standing unscathed? Worth looking into.
There's no clear tendency towards intensified winds. Santa Ana winds have blown since the beginning of time and while 100 mph winds aren't the norm, they have blown that hard 100s of times before.
It doesn't have too. Poor planning/prioritizing of resources are primary contributors to the mess.
You should never mock God. Thank you very much.
You should quit with that meme.
Did the churches that burned-down mock God too?
@@Ryan_Christopheryup🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❗️❗️👏👏👏👏
you mean that "god" who takes credit for killing women and children during child birth and killing with famine?
Facts
@@Ryan_Christopher Most of America hates Hollywood
I feel so bad for all the people, but I think, they will not allow to rebuilt, because they don't want people which much space, thats the reason for this fire I think
How are The Coastal Commission going to allow them to rebuild when they aren't even allowed to remodel or reinforce seawalls? This is going to be a battle between environmentalists and the political money source.
Wow, similar to Mauii!
It's really sad to see this horror. What's even worse is they want allowed to build back. The ones who will are the wealthy.
Developers should never have been allowed to desecrate the shore. There's enough rise going uphill back off the highway to build on, and everyone still have a view.
These beach houses will be gone not because of the fire but ocean will claim them 🥺
suits the rest of us.
which it did, not so many years ago
Ocean be like “Finders keepers!”
Lots of New Public Beaches
Those homes should have never had the right to build directly on the sand. That was gods work giving the ocean views back to the people
amen. agreed. it was disgusting to see IRL
Great point G 👁👌🌊🌊
*THANK YOU*
Agree
Great video 👍 very sad and shocking, I subbed to see when you get out there! Keep us updated 🙏 love from Dallas
those ugly houses were completely blocking the beautiful beach good riddance
Nature always wins, one way or another. Enjoy the view, while it lasts.
I worked at the malibu peir(The Beachomber) & Tapanga Canyon- Chart House/Mastros & drove up and down that strip everyday for 6.5 years. That was my refuge. I dknt have words.
